Q:
What do you guys strive for at end game?
I focus on getting better as a player, lotsa spvp, wvw dueling/roaming and theory crafting new builds, my only problem is ill never farm out enough to get an ascended set of gear for every build I enjoy playing.
Ah, the ever-present and oft-discussed “disappearing weapons/back items” topic. Yes, I know that’s not technically your question, but it is the root of your problem. Until Anet fixes it (which they’ve said they’re aware of but not necessarily working on it) it will continue to affect end-game rewards.
If rewards are your primary motivation to playing a profession, then I’m afraid you’re out of luck. If fun is your primary motivation, then there’s no difference between Engi or any other profession…except maybe that Engi is just inherently more fun .
I continue to play my Engi because I like the dynamic playstyle, it’s my most decked-out character, and the one I’m best with. I keep trying new things to broaden my playing and to constantly improve. My Engi can tackle literally any & every situation depending on my build.
Also, eventually Ascended armor will be available and then you’ll definitely have something to work for.

personally I like the legendary shield FSP on my engineer and I feel that it fits quite well, with the pulsating aura from the shield I generally imagine it to be based on sonic technology like dredge weaponry. That being said my current objective is collecting 100,000 piles of putrid essence /shrug.

I kinda just do whatever is fun end-game and not really worry about the rewards for the most part. However, I will admit frustrations with having no long-term goals for the engi. I want a legendary, but I don’t really feel like I would see it enough to justify getting one. Even when I’m in town I’m usually in a kit for swiftness.
Ascended armor obviously give something to work towards in future patches. However as far as cosmetic long-term rewards go (or even short term), engineer really doesn’t see them, and I highly doubt they are working on “fixing” our problem. I think they acknowledge many engineers don’t like it, but that being said, I do not believe they consider the issue a problem at all, and are not working on it.
On a side note. I really wish we had access to the moot, I don’t care how little I would see it, my love for that mace knows no bounds.

A quick addition:
I’m also an altoholic. I’ve got 8 characters of various levels, half at 80. End-game for me is very broad and “account based.” Since my main is an Engi (and we’ve discussed the aesthetic limitations) and my other 80s are end-game worthy but just not professions I feel like pouring grindy hours and piles of gold into for Legendaries and the like, I tend to play for general fun and broad rewards. I’m not shooting for the mats for any particular Legendary or running champ trains for exotics/precursors. Those rewards aren’t worth the effort required considering my lack of time dedication to any single character. The fact that the only character I’m willing to drop serious gold on is my Engi is what keeps me playing with very broad reward goals and mostly for the fun of it. No matter how many alts I roll I always come back to my Engi. I just crave variety.
Ok, that wasn’t so quick.

I’m pretty happy having a legendary for my Engineer. I find myself constantly swapping the stats of my Predator. Being able to swap from Berserker to Sentinel and everything in between on command is pretty awesome. Very useful for WvW, and when I’m starting up world events by myself and need the extra survivability.
Relevance.

I strive for ascended weapon stats on kits.
really bad engineer
All in all, I feel like I have next to no reason to keep playing my engineer. What keeps you guys going? What long term goals do you have for yourselves that I could maybe strive for?
I have been playing Engineer now for almost a year with half of all my hours played having been on this one character. I realize the reasons to continue playing the class in regards to aesthetic payoffs are few to none. I also realize there are certain aspects of my class that others might be able to more effectively specialize in and exceed without effort. Somehow I have come to realize none of that matters to me, because at the end of the day I chose to remain with an incredibly complex class that takes effort and talent to master. I may or may not be as effective in specific build archetypes, but that by no means undermines the utility I bring to any party and the amount of personal gratitude I obtain from altering negative perspectives about this class. I simply strive to love this class despite its faults and attempt to overcome them as best any player can.
I do not understand the logic in having nothing to strive for in one class over another.
I have my ascended jewelry(6 sets I think), I have my ascended weapons, I strive to have fun with my friends and guildies. I enjoy some PvE, a bit more PvP, and a great deal of WvW.
I do not strive to have fun. It just happens. If it didn’t, I wouldn’t be here. If your not having fun on your engineer, then play the profession you have fun on.

I understand your sentiment. It might seem shallow to depend so much on a means to an end rather than the journey. I just feel like even the journey is a touch vacant. Don’t get me wrong, I love the class. I love going bomberman in melee when I can and then swapping out to gnades when I need to offer some range. I feel like I Macgyver when it comes to filling roles. I was just hoping for a little more substance to my end game. I don’t NEED a carrot on that stick to keep playing. It’s just nice to have one is all.
Improving my skills and optimizing my build, mostly. I spend the majority of my time in sPvP or WvW. The hunt for the perfect set-up is what keeps this game infinitely entertaining where others slow down.
I have also been mucking about in fractals every now and then to get my ascended back one day, looking forward to the next patch breathing some life into them. I’ve been playing through on my zerktard Mesmer too, gonna be nice to dive in with my Engineer when levels are account bound.
I personally enjoy the living story as well (gameplay wise, the story has left much to be desired so far), GW2 is the only MMO in which I’ve actually enjoyed PvE (holy trinity/tank and spank combat of WoWesque games is mind numbingly boring in experience) and the PvE has been improving significantly through the fortnightly updates.
