Passionate engineer; self-proclaimed kitmaster. <3

I feel engineer has the most diverse range of game-play compared to other classes, and with so many builds flying around and variations. I’m really curious what is everyone’s playstyle that they base on when choosing builds.
I’m sure like me, many of you have gone through many builds to suit your own playstyle. =D
For example:
Playstyle: “I’m behind that warrior” style. I like to play keep-away with a bit of support. I rather run and stay in range with many utilities or options on demand. I play PvE.
Builds I’ve played/playing:
“I don’t wanna move” Point defense with Grenadier/Turret/Rifle
“Always at range and GTFO off my face” Rifle/Net/FT/Nades
“Kitmaster and I’m more useful than that ele over there” Medkit/EG/FT/Nades

Various Turret builds:
Point blank Turrets: Healing Turret/Flame Turret/Thumper Turret/Throw mine(or bomb kit).
Offensive Turrets with lots of mobility: Healing T/Net T/Rifle T/Rocket T
Defensive Turrets: Healing T/Net T/Thumper T/Flame T
Full Offensive Turrets: Healing T/Rocket T/Rifle T/Thumper T(or Flame T-your choice)
This is PvE and you always use Rifle(net shot is too good to pass) with 0/30/30/0/10 Traits. Major Traits go towards Turrets(in the Inventions and the Tools trait lines) and towards making your Rifle a better weapon(within Firearms trait).
Currently I’m playing defensive enough to bring in close with Rifle and then BAM CONDI AOE’s and jump shot all over the place.
But until they do more to fix the problems in this class, particularly the traits (how there is Disparity between the other two adventurer classes on engineers) and the misses/smaller explosion size problems.
I wrote about the traits HERE if anyone wants to read them.
I’ve tried a lot of other builds, but I keep going back to FT/Elixir might stacking. Knock ‘em down, survive just about anything they throw at ’ya and surprise ’em with burst they didn’t expect. Love it
I love explosives. I love throwing them. I love sitting in them. Watching the world explode while I laugh and roll gives me the greatest of pleasures. Running at my opponents while throwing a hail of multi-colored grenades only to drop multitudes of multi-colored bombs all over only to duck behind a rock and shoot my multi-colored bullets from my pistols is my favorite past-time.
I tend to run condition and power hybrids pretty much always with Grenades and Pistols. I’ll pick up the Bomb Kit in most situations as well, but not necessarily in all WvW and Dungeon situations. I tend to supplement it with a poppin’ pills style with Elixirs. A pretty damage focused playstyle, but with all the blinds it’s survival is pretty high. Generally you end up with a group of opponents all lit up with more then six conditions alongside decent direct damage and retaliation.

I play a Tanky engineer with pretty much a tankcat build with a slight variation. I run 0/0/30/30/10 this offers a lot of options that fit all my play styles without having to re-allocate my points. On one hand I can go traditional tankcat using elixir s and b and toolkit. On the other hand depending on the situation I can switch to another build fav of 2 turrets and toolkit. My trait setup allows me to not only utilize the traits that make tankcat great but also use the traits that make turrets great if I choose to run them. Also a third build I like to run especially in a spvp match when I know I’ll be facing a minion master necro still working with this same trait setup using elixir b bomb kit and toolkit. The little bit of aoe goes a long ways and u don’t need the bomb radius trait bc the minions will be stuck to u like glue anyways and the bomb heal trait is just a little icing on my cake. This also works well with mesmers. With all these builds I use soldiers gear pistol/shield med kit toolkit and supply. A lot of u will not like this build but it works for me and gives me lots of options for build swapping on the fly between battles.
Currently playing a pow/crit static discharge charr using med kit grenade hidden pistols and tool kit. 20/20/10/0/20 went for 10 in inventions for the little boost to toughness and healing as I like to get in nice and close to take advantage of blunderbuss, overcharged and the double hit from jump shot while being agile and mobile thanks to speedy kits
I’m running 10/30/20/10/0 with P/S and I usually run with the Bomb Kit, Radiation Field and Land Mine. I got yer knockbacks right here!
Was playing around with the Flamethrower kit last night though and had fun…with the number of hits that ft gets and my high crit % the on crit debuffs just stack up.
This is all pve though, not sure that kind of build would work well at all in pvp or wvw.
Choops, would you mind elaborating on your FT/elixir build? I think I’m looking for something like this….
I’ve tried a lot of other builds, but I keep going back to FT/Elixir might stacking. Knock ‘em down, survive just about anything they throw at ’ya and surprise ’em with burst they didn’t expect. Love it

2 Strength runes, 2 Fire runes and 2 Hoelbrak runes keep the might up for as long as possible, and the Soldier’s Amulet with Rampager’s Jewel allow you to eat a lot of damage without having an abysmal crit rate. I consider the 30 in Firearms and the 30 in Alchemy essential, but I’ve been messing around with the last 10 points in a few areas. The on crit protection is nice to have, but some might like the 10 in tools for speedy kits or something, it’s pretty much up to you and your playstyle. 2 knockdowns on relatively low CD, snare, and AoE blind make control in this build very good, and with defensive use of your Elixirs for condition removal plus proactive use of Elixir B for higher crit/more might, I find that the longer the fight lasts, the more powerful I become. Hope this helps!
My Style?
Stupid.
I just roll in all like
“Pshhht…30 vs 1? I got this.”
my play style is quite impressive. I often choose the path that spams the most grenades
I would say my playstyle is mobile siege engine.
But when I use a Ballista, I figure I lose about two thirds of my dps.
So I guess my playstyle is three mobile siege engines.
Rifle/Toolkit static discharge burst, dancing across all ranges.

By playstyle I mostly consider pvp, pve doesn’t really need a playstyle, you have to block hits, completely avoid’em and understand the boss’ patterns/skills to play successfully.
Anyway I consider going close ranged against most classes helps in putting a lot of pressure, not just emotional or smtg, those warriors and thieves ARE going to get hurt, but it’s funny to see ranged classes try everything to keep the distance and then I pull’em up close like crazy with magnet pull to prybar’em in the face haha! No I’m no tankcat just got carried away… but yea I like to be close to my enemy, I feel like I’m chasing and not kiting like most do.
I’m playing a 0/30/20/10/10 SB combat medic. I keep behind the guys that dive in trouble, and support them by area conditioning a mob and providing small but good enough area heals.
I´m playing 20/10/0/20/20.
I stack might, move close in, give monsters a prybar to the face, throw the elixier guns light field and… mostly I stay there, switching between toolkit and rifle and doing some sd damage, giving a little support to my teammates and…. stay alive
I am a tanky support guy. 0/30/0/30/10 I keep Elixir H/Elixer B/Flamethrower/Elixir gun and use dual pistols (But have been considering pistol/shield. I just love blowtorch too much) I focus on stacking buffs, AoE damage and not dying. Its a hectic build, switching between a lot of skills, but I enjoy having answers to a lot of problems and I often find myself to be the last one standing on the battlefield, picking up my teammates off the floor.
I don’t do very good damage, but two blinds, knockback and a lot of regeneration see me through.
I’m running the Anvil build: (30/0/30/10/0) P/S with Healing Turret, Flame Turret, Thumper Turret and Throw Mine. It’s an aggressive tanking setup, or at least it is the way I use it (involving a lot of turret and landmine detonation to activate combo fields and bits of extra damage), with a good bit of control and decent damage.
Currently, the crowning achievement of the Anvil is that it’s been able to see me to victory over a Veteran Karka (and occasional Young Karka that kept respawning during the battle).
