The engineer is good at at killing trash with the bomb kit/other AoE, but how do we go about dealing with the health sponges that are bosses? I feel pretty useless when I just stand in a corner of the room chucking grenades… makes me feel like I should have rolled a better ranged DPS class.

Our conditions are pretty much useless. We can’t stack bleeds, movement-impairing conditions are moot since everyone stays in melee range anyway, our CC is impaired by Defiant and blind only works 10% of the time. Confusion is useless as well, since bosses don’t spam skills, instead opting for high damage skills that instantly down players on a 5-second interval.

How can I feel useful as a dungeoneering engineer?

There is no better range dps then grenades – your equipment maybe sucks.

Vulnerability? 15 stacks + AoE?

We can’t stack bleeds,

20 stacks + AoE Bleeding? wtf?

our CC is impaired by Defiant

For other classes too!

and blind only works 10% of the time.

Do you always play against Dredges? Otherwise it works nearly always!

Confusion is useless as well, since bosses don’t spam skills,

Wrong, just know when to stack confusion. Nearly every boss has phases where he spamms a lot of skills in a second. You can hurt very hart with confusion with knowledge

Best range dps, vulnerability, healing turret, elixir gun, slow downs plus high survivability.

And for speed runs, best dps over all.

Let me ask you one simple question: how much hours of play time with engineer? You seem preaty new to engineer to me. Don’t kittening judge about a komplex class if you have no clue. Thanks.

That’s neat and all, but I’m talking about bosses. All things you mentioned are impaired by Unshakable:

“Gains defiant when targeted by crowd control skills. Blind is 10% effective. Weakness and vulnerability last 50% less time.”

How did you get those bomb numbers so high? I’m guessing other classes provided you with 25 Might, Fury, and banner bonuses?

I find my chill engineer rather useful in pug dungeons where I find that I’m the one who’s getting targeted often.
It basically trivialises a large portion of melee bosses/mobs and gives high damage at up to 1500 range.
You really only need 30 in explosives, chill duration runes, grenade kit and mortar to get the most out of chill.
Using berserker gear helps to, although I opt to run Knights gear with berserker trinkets for that added survivability when playing with randoms.
Lastly, I’m not entirely sure but chill may also increase skill recharge on enemy npcs.

What’s the point in slowing movement speed though, if the current accepted “best strategy” for most bosses is to lure him into a corner and melee him?

Because you may not be in an organised group or fighting a boss that you don’t want to be in melee range of.
Although I sure wish the enemy ai was a little more intelligent to not run around a doorway, stack on top of each other and take a massive amount of damage.

Best confusion moment is on the boss in the sub-zero fractal, right as he ports up onto the ledge. He triggers something like 20x in 10 seconds. It’s crazy to watch if you sit on ~100% confusion duration.

The strength of heart to face oneself has been made manifest. The persona Carighan has appeared.
