Which roles do we usually cover in tPVP?
I’m impressed you reached rank 20 without ever trying tournaments.
Since you can solo queue for tournaments, I never bothered with hot-join. Plus, 5v5 is way more fun.
As for the answer to your question.. I went to rank 10 on my Engineer through solo-queuing tournaments only, trying various builds but could only find success as a bunker build. (either pistol/shield or rifle)
When I tried various damage builds, I found people cued in that I wasn’t a bunker-spec’d engineer and focused on killing me — probably because Engineers die really fast when we’re not bunker built. =(
Bunker builds seem to be the only one. Like Gilgamesh said, Engineers that don’t fully spec into bunkering just don’t seem to be able to survive long enough to mean anything

AE cond damage with bombs/grenades and p/p and Crit/Power rifle build are viable if you want to go dps. The cond build is probably stronger overall, the rifle builds tend to be pretty squishy but its fun blowing people up as fast and seeing big numbers.
Bunker builds are obviously an option too. However, while people might think the most common role for an engi on a TPvP team is bunkering I do not feel that is as viable in high level team comps as the AE cond build.
Cond damage nodefighter is by far the most viable engineer build atm.
Focusing on bombs or nades for high dmg output on everyone trying to get/defend the nodes and knocking them back constantly.
Much more reliable damage output, and if played well, you can survive plenty in 1v1/1v2 scenarios. Sometimes even 1v3 until back-up arrives. WITHOUT being bunker build. You have blocks, reflects, aoe blinds, constant vigor, energy reset with Elixir R, selfress.
It’s just kittening great.
