Who the engineer is
Heh heh.
That is a very entertaining insight into the Engineer.
It should also be added that the Engineer is so bad in their imitation they fail to use most their skills effectively or even properly, causing self knockbacks, stuns and RNG.
Who needs RTL when you can lauch yourself backwards into the unknown and land flat on your face.
“That was deliberate, it was deliberate”
at this point, i find it the hardest profession to master with all its mico managing. Its fun regardless…but any further nerf from Anet would just make it tiresome.
Yes. I feel like this is a better class description that what anet posted. It explains a lot
I have thought of this too, but came to the conclusion that while engies are not physically strong or naturally attuned to magic, they are the smartest class in tyria and use that knowledge to fight
They are the smartest, but looking at how a lot of their skills look comical, I think that the engineer just made everything in a day then ran out into the wild.
Awesome! Please anet don’t kill the engineer just move KR to 30 points. We will only have SD power rifle build left and pigeon holed into certain utilities with tool belt that work with SD
We can use grenades, bombs and flamethrower!
While some boring classes just stand there and bash the mob, I run around blowing\bleeding\slowing\poisoning everything around
Seriously tho engineer is fun and he can make hell of noise.
I wouldn’t say they have no physical capabilities, because lugging grenades farther than rifles seem to shoot or carting around what’s probably a hundred pounds or so of bombs (and those are not small bombs) or the flamethrower would definitely take being pretty fit.
But they share being the least magical profession with the Warrior, and probably think they’re so much smarter than those brutes and they’re going to invent themselves into super soldiers except we’re still in like the equivalent of the Victorian Era for technology (the non-magical variants, anyway) so their eccentric genius gets hit with some limitations.

Source on the possible KR change? 30 points is ridiculous.
If that goes live, I’m more than likely switching to another profession as a main.
For the toast!
No source but I’d rather it be 30pts than the further nerf to KR. 30% increase crit DMG is pretty nice.
Yeah… Even when KR was an adept trait I only took it for some dungeon runs. No way I’ll ever take it if it becomes a grandmaster.
The grenades being thrown further than a bullet makes no sense to me. I don’t think any normal person can do that=/
The rifle is more like a shotgun
And grenades… They are magical, they get extra speed when they are thrown away
You could say engineers are the one inventing and testing weapons that will be given to all soldiers in the future. Yeah, if warriors, thieves or others can do stuff right now, is also thanks to the engineers who developed weapons like fast-reload rifles or guns.
Yeah, try to do your puny unload with your guns, when you have to recharge them after every shot.
Being in development, our toys are kinda dangerous. Only the the craziest of people would do such a job. And only the smartest of them would survive to do it again.
Other than that, the engineer is the intuitive, crafty, quick-minded guy, who doesn’t excel at any form of fight. He is not swift like a thief (even if he can run fast), nor strong like a warrior and can’t control any kind of magic power.
Our fighting techniques look clunky and risky. But when the enemy less expects it, we perform miracles.
Our weapons are fantasy, intuition, ingenuity and experience. And when we use them, the strong warrior who rushed us seeing us as an easy and weak prey will be lying on the ground, asking himself where the hell his legs may be.
And thieves thinking they can outsmart us just realize they can’t outsmart our prybar.XD

LOL omg, so true. It’s like Engineer is the crazy old inventors who make you laugh cause he screws everything up, what a great way to look at my character now
I have thought of this too, but came to the conclusion that while engies are not physically strong or naturally attuned to magic, they are the smartest class in tyria and use that knowledge to fight
Actually I believe the “lore” concept is that elementalists are the smartest (original ele profession attribute was called intelligence. They have studied and mastered every aspect of elemental magic). They are scholars—their power comes from their vast learning and understanding.
Engineers had “ingenuity” as their profession attribute, which is more like creativity. They seem to be more into “applied science” than actually understanding how any of their stuff works. They do things by trial-and-error. I believe this is why the devs unfortunately decided to make RNG a big part of engineers. They don’t really understand how stuff works but they improvise to fit the situation.
So I agree with the OP. I actually enjoy the idea of a character that has absolutely nothing to give him an advantage over other professions. We’re not stronger, faster, smarter, or more talented. We just find a way to survive anyway.
I wish they reduced Slick Shoes CD to 45s untraited. Love this soooo much but dang 60s CD.

I would say batman would be part engie/warrior, even without his gadgets he still knows how to fight. I think we are more like iron man, without tech we are screwed.

I could see Kit Refinement moving to a 20-point slot.
30 would be overkill.

As if it would really change most of builds who take KR + speed anyway.

lol I guess so, without those brains we are the equivalent of this guy. Just guys with a prybar
(Yes I know its a magical prybar but so is ours, where does it go when we put it away? )
Pre-release I was sure engineers were gadgets and turrets!! BUT.. here is THE TRUTH ABOUT THE ENGINEER…:
We’re outcast of society!! That’s why we carry our hobo packs everywhere we go. At some point in our life we joined the Army and learnt about bombs & grenades. Then we moved on to becoming plumbers with our handy toolkit at the local restaurant until that faithful night when while in the middle of fixing ourselves a snack, we stumble upon powerful potions (elixirs) and we became Magicians!!!
PS: Stimulant pack is only a redbull

True…without his brains he wouldn’t have his nifty tech. But then again, whenever he doesn’t have his tech he gets his kitten handed to him. Brains alone cannot win a war. Gotta have a bigass gun too. Iron Man = Asura Engi. All other races, find your own superhero to emulate.

Kits are superior to conjured weapons in every way. Engineer uses machines, and yes, they are not trained warriors, that’s the whole point. It’s flexibility vs training, the same scenario you’d get in a thief vs assassin scenario. It takes skill to have such a great seamless flexibility over so many different things, and that’s a very valuble skill in itself. A wrench can cave a skull in as well as any mace, for example.
As for you feeling Engineer fighting is awkward and subpar, I have three words for you: Learn to play. It’s jack of all trade vs specialist and the former will win if skilled since he has no real weaknesses to exploit.

I did not mean as in actual gameplay, I’m talking about the concept. Yes the engineer has skill on why he/she does, but that doesn’t change my point.
It is an awkward combat because he fight in unconventional ways. It is for that reason we are dangerous. We use things in ways not intended
And our weekness is stability.

Well after having about 15 duels vs the best d@m thief I have ever seen I can say that every class have a degree of flexibility. I am pleased to say I did better by just changing one utlity though, which reinforces my point that engy got something to tackle everything.
But I disagree that unconventional means awkward, how would new fighting styles have evolved over the ages if that were true?
We do have tools to tackle everything because the engineer didn’t try to just mimic one profession, but a little of all. We are the jack of trades, skilled in many but master of none. That is the result of my idea as to why the engineer became the engineer. Unskilled in the forms of combat available, he/shed took a little of them all and made his own.
Pretty sure physical strength isn’t an issue for any profession (character appearance and environmental weapons say hello). I don’t see why I can’t make a warrior that spends their off-time studying the equivalent of quantum physics, either.
I do like to imagine that my engi was born without access to magic, somehow; makes justifying not practicing it easier.
Speaking of emulating Batman, engis could use a melee weapon.

Well regarding the self-knockback with the Overcharged Shot ability, I really do think that’s realistic.
First of all, any gun blast powerful enough to knock over someone is going to also knock over the shooter. That’s just physics. Whatever force comes out one end is also going to be pushing back the opposite way (“recoil”).
Second, Overcharged Shot would be very OP if it didn’t have the self knock-back, IMO. It serves as a balancer.
I actually love this interpretation of who the engineer is. It certainly suits mine: a scrawny Sylvari engineer who screams like a wuss every time he uses overcharged shot, rocket boots or even jump shot. Haha!
I’d say:
mesmer, elementalist, necromancer, ranger fight with brain, not brawl.
Engineers fight with BRAIN-POWERED BRAWL!XD
Nothing better than using your brain to make sure you can solve any problem with brute force.XD
because he doesn’t know it himself
I was planning on making an Engineer-esque character for an uncoming DnD campaign. So far, the DM and I have gone the route of Weaponsmaster Rogue with a lot of points into crafting skills. The guy makes a bunch of silly weapons that technically anybody can use, but he just uses them the best/in unique ways.
So, yeah: Weaponsmaster Rogue with investments into Weapon Crafting disciplines.
“Engineers fight with BRAIN-POWERED BRAWL!XD”

It’s funny because my main was born with that mindset, first out of fun talks with friends, then after hitting 80 and getting geared correctly… Well I ended up liking it.
A Charr, too small to be of any use in the legions, cast aside, studied engineering, conceived machines, guns, created elixirs, became spiteful, aggressive, intimidating.
If they don’t need me, I’m certainly not going to need them.

I love character back stories
If it wasn’t for the fact that in the charrs everybody loves engineers, I would feel the same. And I name my character Tersite, because of this (his Englisc name is Thersites). The epitome of the outcast.
Thersites appears in the Iliad, he is described as the worst soldier among the Danais. The ugliest and the weakest. But he is the only one with enough courage to say what he thinks to everyone, and gets punished for this. An anti-hero in a world of heroes, struggling for each inch of his life.
