ele: support, roamer
engi: support, bunker, roamer, decap

engi may not be the better roamer, but he can perform multiple jobs. If necessary even on the same time. Take the engi and you have saved one slot in your team-comp that you can fill with whatever.

Engineer is love, Engineer is life.

Depends on what game mode.

Generally, the engineer is able to competently fill almost any role but will never have the extreme damage spikes of the ele.

You play an engineer because you want to be able to switch gear and a few traits and feel like you have a whole new tune. In WvW, I frequently change a trait or utility when in a keep or sieging or when I see a bigger or smaller group of enemies.

So much you can do that it takes serious time to learn to really use all of that ability.

Engie= variety of roles and playstyles in one tune.
Ele = greatest DPS but lacks some of the utility.

you take the Engi if you need more side-point pressure instead of team-fight sustain

Ele has great sustain and can really turn the tide of a fight, they also provide great support on mid. Engie provides great pressure across multiple opponents and provides better team utility. Ele is an easier pick because an Engie needs more babysitting due to immobilize wrecking Engineers. They are both effective, but Ele is easier to get away with at the moment.

I think cc is probably the main advantage, and maybe cleave, although engineer cleave is limited by bubble rezzes. Ele is definitely good right now though and is probably a bit better overall in a premade vs. premade fight.

Pretty much what everybody have said so far. Engineers can do more things, not as expertly as classes dedicated to a certain job, but makes up for it in terms of flexibility.

more babysitting huh… might sound a bit rude.. but do you play engi yourself? I am by all means NOT a pro…average at best and even i can sorta see the…lets say BS dripping from that claim of yours. And btw.. if immobilise is an issue for you.. there is a nice trait in the inventions traitline available for 10 points called cloaking device that turns you instantly invisible for 5 seconds when you are immobilised..just sayin. Thats not enough? How about you use the overcharged shot of the rifle.. which cures you from that oh so dreadfull immobilise and also from cripple and chill WHILE giving the enemie a knockback that sends em flying quite far or atleast interrupts. How about rocket boots? Do the same just send you forward. Still not enough? How about the healing turret that cleans conditions like this pretty easily? Not enough? Might wanna try the e-gun #5 what also keeps that dreadfull immobilise away. Or wanna be EXTRA save? Take a sip of elixir-c and convert all your condies to random boons. And there is a nice trait in the alchemy line for 15 points called transmute that gives you 100% chance to convert an incoming condition all 15 seconds to a boon without you even needing to think about it what pretty much removes the first immobilise anyways. Heck i use that one to “cheat” so often in situations where 2 buttons need to be pressed and it immobilises you when you push the first (think asura fractal center console). Seriosly.. get real.. i mean yea eles do more damage without a doubt and are great supporters, fun to have arround and beasts in battle, im not kittenting on the class at all cause they are great and i respect eles a lot… but immobilise, thats all you got? I dunno what build you run but if you fear that condition so badly.. you might wanna change it a little bit.

The KEY reason I think an engineer is better in tPvP and I play with a less serious group, I should warn. . . .

When I first approach, you have absolutely no idea what I might be running.
With an elementalist, you have a very good idea what to do when you see one based on the weapons you see.

That surprise factor can make a big difference.

Every single reason you provided, unfortunately, would be a waste.

there is a nice trait in the inventions traitline available for 10 points called cloaking device that turns you instantly invisible for 5 seconds when you are immobilised..just sayin

Firstly, you may not understand what is and isn’t effective for Engineers at the moment, but I’m referring to Meta PvP builds that support you, and your team. Firstly, the 5 seconds stealth causes you to stop contesting points. It also means you can’t take either Grenadier, Backpack Re generator or Speedy kits. Grenadier (and Backpack, but we need protection injection) take up the GM slot in both their lines, and speedy kits is obvious. We have no room to put 10 in that line just for that trait, it would only be applicable in a Turret build which is only good vs scrubs and has no place in team queue.

How about you use the overcharged shot of the rifle.. which cures you from that oh so dreadfull immobilise and also from cripple and chill

If you run a Celestial build with Rifle then this is definitely an option, but I wouldn’t want to use one of the sets hardest hitting skills just to escape, but you’re right it can.

How about rocket boots? Do the same just send you forward. Still not enough? How about the healing turret that cleans conditions like this pretty easily?

Rocket boots is a nice utility but with Bomb and Grenade kit being essential, we really only have a spot left for Elixir S or Elixir Gun. Healing turret is a waste, we shouldn’t use it just to cleanse immobilize and I beat so many Engineers who waste time doing that. Again Elixir C does provide a cleanse, but we have no room for it. Transmute also removes the condition before it’s applied, so I wouldn’t have to complain about immobilize in that case anyway would I?

At the end of the day, that condition is one very important reason why top teams don’t take Engineer, without baby sitting them. There are other reasons, but that is the one I chose in my original post. Rom’s going to Jail took Texbi in an ESL a while back, but to do so they had Helseth baby sit him and focus the necro the entire game. We can work, but you need to work around that.

You asked me if I play Engineer myself, but from your post I doubt your experience, so forgive me if you are. At the end of the day, I’m not wrong, and I do in fact play Engineer to the level that I can name only three other Engineers I wont beat 90% of the time in a flat 1v1. I wouldn’t normally come across kitteny, or act like I’m better than you but you discredit what I say in the first sentence of your post. Yes Engineers need to be baby sat; Necromancers will kill Engineers with ease, Pin Down will often cause an Engineers death, because within 1/2 a second they will be followed up with cc and a team target on your head.
