Why is grenadier underwater so overnerfed and worse than a speargun?

Hey guys, i would like to know the reason behind the horrible nerf for engineer grenadier underwater, granted it dealt amazing damage but it was only 2 grenades even with the 3 trait lines, now you correctly fire 3 grenades at slower speed, theorically it should make up for the nerf right? WRONG!
You are almost freaking useless with grenades underwater hitting like 1-2 grenade and the third and most of the times second too missing…
Am i doing wrong or did anet brilliantly overkilled a playstyle once again for a class that is not thief with ludricous nerfs?

I find my grenades to be pretty awesome underwater, even post nerf. You are right that the spread has increased, but that’s actually a godsend since you can now easily kite multiple mobs.
I really don’t like the speargun, at all. The net shot never hits and neither does the timed bomb. At least with the Grenade kit I can use all 5 of my skills and know they will actually hit the mob.

I took grenades off my underwater bar, and also prefer speargun with elixir B and elixir u. I have 10% extra damage from trait for both rifle/speargun and I’ve found that it yields much better results than grenades now do.

2 out of 3 of your grenades generally end up drifting off in a random direction. If they reduced the spread a little grenades would be back to their former glory. That’s all that’s stopping them from doing insane burst underwater.

Same. They’re good for killing several mobs at once.
Downside is, they tend to pull even more mobs than you’re trying to kill.

It’s fine if you use them within about 500 range or so. Beyond that they spread out too much and become rather ineffective.
Maybe it’s just how I play (badly) underwater but I always seem to be within 600ish range of the enemy anyhow when underwater so it usually isn’t a problem for me.

Spread out too much? It doesn’t matter how far away you are, the damage radius is still in the reticule circle on the ground.

Grenades work differently underwater. There is no reticule circle on the ground, because there is no ground. They’re directly targeted underwater.

I take on 2, 3, 4+ mobs under water with grenades and have no trouble mowing through them. Sometimes I’ll drop some bombs if critters get too close, but I’ve soloed champions under water in Orr with grenades post-nerf.
They were WAY overpowered before and work fine for me now.

rofl… i solo champs underwater with my ele too, that doesnt mean squatt rly.
grenades right now for me IMO is a waste skill slot underwater, its simply bad in dps, i much prefer speargun.

Speargun is awful dps on the base ability. It has a couple of decent dps abilities but you should be weaving those in with grenades. I can’t imagine speargun is anywhere near competitive dps with grenades underwater, even post nerf, if you actually sit in speargun waiting for cooldowns spamming 1.

You never hit that 3th grenade, even the 2nd is random.
Anything that moves, will be missed because your “aim” with grenades underwater doesnt lead and doesnt lock-on.
Speargun is still aweful aswell. The best dmg ability is achieved by hugging your opponent. And the basic shot is soooooo slow. slow firerate, and slow travel time. Its impossible to hit anything that moves away from you because of how slow the projectile is.
I think i mostly use Elixirgun now, not exactly ideal either.
