There’s two kinds of people… The quick and the dead”
(edited by Taril.8619)
So, I’m getting a bit bored with the air of negativity that resides around Engineers, what with the complaints that the class is “Half finished” or that it is “Terrible and lacks damage” I wanted to try and get some positivity out there whilst also being constructive.
A good way to achieve this is for Engie players (Whom have spent a lot of time with the profession and will have usually tried out many builds) to state what their top 3 favourite traits are (Out of all 60 Major and 15 Minor) and why they are their favourite. This can help with designing changes to the more lackluster traits to make them not only viable but also enjoyable.
I’ll start with my 3 favourites:
(edited by Taril.8619)
Kit Refinement
Juggernaut
Adrenal Implant
I’ll give my 3 favorite that aren’t grenade related, ‘cause uh… yeah, else it’d be grenadier, steel-packed explosives, and shrapnel. Dat damage.
Kit Refinement. How to have no cast time and whip out some cool effects in a split second: the trait. I run 4 kits, so when I get knocked down, mashing every kit shortcut at once is kind of fun. I double tap medkit ’cause you can actually double proc it, and it crits for 1k in CoF explorable.
Enduring Damage. ’Cause, uh, more damage. 10% to boot.
Adrenal Implant. Dodging more is cool. And we don’t have to give up a utility slot, and it’s in a great trait line. I’ll admit I’d take something else if the alternative weren’t completely awful (oh boy retaliation! I don’t make enough of that with my double super elixirs).
Kit refinement
Elite supplies
Incendiary powder
p.s. eles also have a burning on crit trait
1. Transmute
2. Kit refinement
3. Cloaking device
(Favorite, not most effective/important)
Kit Refinement
Speedy Kits
Coated Bullets
i personally like coated bullet and Static discharge i hate all else
my Favorite traits are
1. Self- Regulating Defenses, Life saving when you in a zerg, forget to check HP, or a thief thinks he so cool and sneaks you. In my words " I’m tiny i should be taking more damage lol!" also a good way to wait for a CD to end giving a foe false hope.
2. Cleaning Formula 409, if trait right with the right skills you can be the last one standing, with having 9 possible cures and then they can reset and you still have all your skills.
3. Speedy Kits, endless combos. with this one trait mix with others you can also get. perma swiftness vigor regeneration and might stacks,
I been playing Engi from the start, just about every build ever post on the forums i have tested. I also have taken some of the builds that was really well thought, and change them to make many more, slowly growing to that one build that is perfect for engineer’s to be feared
Kit Refinement
Because double super elixir is strong and bound to get nerfed. Double grenade barrage is nice burst. Also, its fun to constantly explode when spamming medkit.
Cloaking device
A fun trait that is sometimes helpful. Sometimes.
Self-Regulating Defenses – A hard stop on damage when you’re about to die is always clutch in pvp. It lets you cheat death, or at the least delay it. Synergizes well with Inertial Converter, allowing you to pop off some last minute damage while invulning incoming damage.
Speedy Kits – required in WvW. Wish it wasn’t true, but I have less fun when I don’t use it.
Elementalist’s “Burning Precision” says hi!
Mine are:
- Kit Refinement: lots of extra goodies to go off by a simple switch. Adds more to the playstyle of switching kits.
- Grenadier: Love this one in WvW because of the extra range. Most enemies have max 1200 units so those 300 extra saves me from AoE.
- Speedy Kits: Also lovely to have in WvW where you got to move a lot, and fast. This one goes very well with Invigorating Speed.

Besides Grenadier…
Steel-Packed Powder
Static Discharge
Sharpshooter
1. Scope
2. Adredenal Implant
3. Acidic Elixers
1. Coated Bullets
2. and 3. Whatever fits well with my current build.
1. Speedy Kits – I have a real problem with letting this one go, I have tried to have builds without it but its hard to ween yourself off permaswiftness at all times.
2. Self-Regulating Defenses – I got bored with Supply Crate awhile back and my Asura Golems attack rabbits over actual enemies, so I started using Elixir X for the fun of it and it can really be a blast for harassing zergs and when you get the Tornado and happen to get focused SRD will kick in and cancel the Tornado so you can make a tiny escape.
3. Kit Refinement – This is the Engineers Joker card when used right it allows complete domination of enemies. Just KR and Toolkit is what allows me to solo Champs without taking a hit.
1. Incendiary Power – Extra burning is great!
2. Napalm Specialist – Burns last longer!
3. HGH – Adding stacks of Might to my normal exlir bonuses is great, and with Cleansing Formula 409 (technically cheating, since that’s 4 traits) it gives me the incentive to pop and drop elixirs constantly.
Mostly from a WvW perspective:
Accelerant-Packed Turrets – Boom! Good, balanced, ability. Seriously this trait is awesome, and could be so much better if only turrets were a little more playable.
Sitting Duck – Its not overpowered, however its just a really well designed skill. I wish we had more skills like this that fit into a lot of different builds.
Cleaning Formula 409 – Consistent condition removal on yourself and other players. Balanced well around needing elixirs to make it effective. We need more abilities in the the middle tier like this that are worth getting for a lot of builds. (Also Enhanced Performance falls into this category as well, kinda a fourth addition just because it deserves to be mentioned)
Not telling! They’d only get nerfed! :-)
My favorite skills are
Pistol 3
Tool kit 4
Tool kit 5
Favorite traits are
Self regulating defense
Grenadier
Swiftness on crit
For my Captain America Build:
Reinforced Shield so I can throw my shield more.
Coated Bullets to turn my pistol 1 and 2 skills into aoe/double damage with pistol 1 at max range.
Static Discharge for the extra attacks to proc crits (and gives me a non-linear aoe).
self regulating defence: I cant count how many times this one saved me from laggy zergs.
speedy kits: like the other people said, i can not let it go for some reason
grenadier: well, no explanations needed
Also
3. Speedy Kits, endless combos. with this one trait mix with others you can also get. perma swiftness vigor regeneration and might stacks,
Please enlighthen this poor soul how you stack mights with speedy kits
Protection Injection — I pvp a lot where there are a lot of CC going on. With this, it’s like a consistant protection buff and is really, really nice
Self-regulating Defenses — One less elixir on the bar, and it activates automatically. Combined with the next one this thing is a godsend..
Automated Medical Response — Immunity AND heal refresh? Yes please.
These are for world PvE not dungeons or PvP.
Kit Refinement
Speedy Kits
Juggernaut
To go engineer without kits is like going staff ele while only using fire atunement.
It works, but you are missing out on quite a bit o.O
3. Speedy Kits, endless combos. with this one trait mix with others you can also get. perma swiftness vigor regeneration and might stacks,
Please enlighthen this poor soul how you stack mights with speedy kits
Speedy Kits doesn’t stack Might itself. However, with the Juggernaut trait the flamethrower can give constant might (albeit only a few stacks) provided you keep switching back to it – which you’ll do anyway if you run Speedy Kits.
Three of my WvW staples:
1. Speedy Kits —because I’m running for my life… now, I’m chasing down that …nope running for my life again …running, chasing, running, chasing.
2. Accelerant-Packed Turrets —put some distance between me and that ugly sob.
3. Rifled Barrels -- a 900-1200 foot net shot is a pretty good indicator of the outcome.
