best for orr farming.
Flamethrower, bomb, and grenades are all high on the aoe totem pole. Flamethrower does the least damage but is the most reliable in attack speed, range, and mobs hit. Bombs do good damage, but require you to be point blank. Grenades can be used at any range, but can have long travel times, occasionally leading to missing the target.
Pistol 1 with piercing shots can be good for tagging multiple targets, you just have to line it up sometimes. Rifle 1 is slightly harder to use, but can hit more targets with its aoe abilities. (Assuming 5 on blunderbuss and up to 10 on jump shot, versus 4 on static shot and 3-5 five on blowtorch. Unknown if shield throw has a limit.)
For a build, condition or zerker builds can work, using p/p and ‘nades or FT on condition or rifle and ’nades on zerker. Generally, don’t bother with turrets as their damage doesn’t scale, and gadgets are usually single target, though goggles can give some nice fury. Elixirs can be useful for condition removal and self buffs, and the only kit really to shy away from is elixir gun, as it only has 2 aoes with relatively long cds untraited (tool kit has situational uses, such as keeping you alive if you get too much hate, along with an aoe bleed).
For the occasional elite, supply kit is you best bet, as it gives an ohkitten button if you need heals and some breathing room. Mortar is weak and shares the same downfalls as turrets, and elixir x is unpredictable.
Oh, you could also try a static discharge build, rather big on the aoe and has plenty of options for not dying.
Have a funtastic day!
Sweet. Im comming from a mesmer, and have a harder time tagging mobs. My engineer is only level 20 right now. Ima get on it and get him to 80 asap.
I use a turret build to farm stuff, and it works pretty well. I use the toolbelt skills with Static Discharge trait, drop my turrets and use their cooldowns quickly, then blow them all up. If I need heals I’ll drop all my turrets except for the heal turret, F1 for the water field, then blow the turrets as fast as I can while using the Rifle 5 charge. If I’m not lagging I’ll get 2-3 heal finishers. If I’m lagging I’ll get 0-1.
I never leave the heal turret out for any length of time. I just drop it for the heal, perhaps use the cooldown if I need to condition cleanse, and pick it back up. The cooldown is very short, and I don’t usually blow it up unless everything is nearly dead.
Sometimes I swap one of my turrets out for the bomb kit so I can use the fire bomb for Might finishers, but it’s usually not necessary.
I’m currently using the trait that makes turrets knockback when they explode as well as the one that lets me ground-target turrets. This build isn’t “optimal” but it gives me tons of versatility. I can swap from burst DPS to sustained damage to CC to burst heals/cleanse depending on what the situation needs.
And if I’m just killing loads of random trash then I’ll leave the turrets out and let them shoot stuff because #lazy.
Also, I’ve learned that tossing a Thumper turret on a wall in WvW, using the cooldown, then blowing it up is pretty effective at keeping the ramparts clear. Rifle turret does something similar with a shorter cooldown. It’s not amazing, but it gives me something to do between farming runs.
In probably every build, you could just swap in a Grenade Kit while running around and point blank tag all the mobs by throwing them on the ground. That’s at least what I do. Definitely one of the easiest classes to tag mobs with, since we can kinda skirt the AoE cap with having 3 separate AoE attacks in one.

Why would you level up an Engineer to farm Orr? Just curious, as I much prefer to use other classes for PvE.
It’s [NERF] or nothing!
Grenades with Grenadier means even when you are just autoing, you can hit up to 15 mobs per attack (3 Grenades x 5 Targets per AoE hit) and you can do it from 1500 range. Because you can anticipate everything that happens in Orr, it’s trivial to lead the mob groups and you can, for instance, tag mobs on both sides of Shelter’s Gate Camp by standing in the middle. And Poison Grenade allows you to pre-coat an area for when the mobs turn from invincible to damageable.
Static Discharge with Surprise Shot from Rifle Turret means every 8 seconds you get an off-the-global-cooldown chain lighting attack you can shoot in any direction which tags up mobs nicely. Throw Wrench is also excellent for tagging up mobs in a line and letting off a Static Discharge.
Although I personally take Tool Kit as my third utility (GK, RT, TK — Gear Shield is a life-saver while travelling), Elixir Gun’s Acid Bomb is excellent to pre-coat an area, with similar mechanics to Poison Grenade.
And, I don’t think Conditions are your friend when you’re just competing to tag mobs. So go Power/Precision/Magic Find.

I’m having tons of fun in Orr with little Vyxxi and her Flamethrower. I can just stay off on the sides and tag every single mob. And because I’m set up as kinda tanky (2900ish Armor 18-19k health) I can usually survive when every mob in a group turns its attention on me when a flaming ball of napalm hits them full in the face.
As far as my build, it’s a pretty lazy and almost fully automated one because I don’t like all this kit-flipping mental-timers crap. So I just go 10-30-0-30-0 with 2×2×2 (Fire/Hoelbrak/Strength) runes for a combined 90% Might duration, Strength and Bloodlust sigils and run around with my FT equipped constantly and elixirs for everything else (my elite is Supply Crate). And if I ever find myself underwater I use the EG (currently with Earth sigil)
It works awesome for me and my bags are always bursting with loot! In fact, it feels that the button I use the most during events is ‘F’
And I just love to see Orr burn!

You kittens don’t even know what the prefix “meta” means.
Pistol with Coated Bullets gives us the most tagging options.
Flamethrower is runner-up with Flame Blast able to damage 5 targets at once.
Sickman/kitmaster build, 30/0/0/20/20. 2x Altruism. (Til I get MF runes)
I run P/P, EG, (Free slot, usually Elixir B or FT), and GK with Medkit. I am a self admitting E-gun addict – I can’t stand not having Egun, particularly when in a group, for the triple condition removal and low cd blast finisher. When not used to purge conditions, Fumigate works just as well as FT’s auto for tagging targets.
You don’t need rifle turret for the static discharge in my opinion for Orr farming, as you have enough AoE being pumped out between nades, static shot and fumigate cones. Activated kit utils are usually enough to get bouncing discharges when ya need them.
Even running MF gear, the amount of healing output I can achieve is ridiculous. I see D/D eles and mesmers just melting to that which I just shrug off.
Personally I recommend against turret knockback builds for farming purposes, to preserve the sanity of any melee classes who also wish to farm. People will hate you.
Edit: Just thought I should mention the proper way to tag with nades and kit refinement: Target the largest cluster of mobs with the F1 skill. Activate kit around any you have missed for a secondary aoe tag. If that’s somehow still not enough (ie a second group has come in) you have nades with a range of 1500 that can hit up to 15 targets at once, although, nades are better used at short/medium range due to kit refinement bursts/travel speed.
For the toast!
