engineer or mesmer in solo pve and and pvp?
Dungeons/Fractals: engineer > mesmer. almost always.
15sec group-stealth + vuln. stacking will outcompede a mesmer any day.
the only exception is lupicus where a well timed bubble can nuke him.
PvP:
A nullfield on a point can be awesome, and the mesmer definitively brings great utility to a team. Also portal-play (fast travel between mid/home/far) can be a match-deciding factor for your team.
But the engi is simply more versatile. securing or preventing stomps is much easier for us than for mesmers, we are extremely mobile on our own, we can condi-suppress whole points, disable stealth-rezz and decap a point against multiple defenders in seconds, due to the high amount of hard/soft cc’s we can spam.
Since stealth is kinda easily accessible for us as well we even can setup and execute ambushes, stealth-rezz and stealth-stomp as well.
last but not least we bring many blast-finishers and fire/water/smoke fields for buffing/healing/stealthing the whole team on a point (the later is only recommended for a fast disengage).
We buff, we heal and we kill almost anything and the most awesome part is that we can accomplish huge chunks of the above described features in one and the same build, depending on where we spend our traits, what kits/utilities we choose.
The engi may be out-competed by other classes on most stuff he tries to do, but none of the other classes can combine so much different utility in one single build. Our strength is the fact that we come prepared to almost any possible match-up.
I’ll talk more about pvp, since I only play pvp in GW2:
Although a mesmer can be a pain in the kitten , and hard to kill if well played, for conquest pvp, I guess they lack some point holding capabilities. You’ll be able to 1v1 assault a point, but not hold it. And also, you’ll suffer in group battles, since mesmers lack AOE damage. I’ve played mesmer for sometime, and it’s fun, specially when you learn how to trick your enemy (you always see someone complaining about mesmers on the posts). But at the end, even if you build a more defensive mesmer, it’s a squishy class, and I don’t like having to wait for the right opportunity to engage a battle.
Engineers, they can hold a point, since we have a lot of cc, and also good survivability. Also, you can setup a good roamer, bunker, or balanced player. Another thing, grenades and bombs are strong AOE attacks, besides turrets and other things. It’s really a versatile profession.
I try to play other professions sometimes, but I always get back to the engineer. Nothing funnier than blow up people with the big oil bomb, or send them flying off a point with rifle #4. Engineers have a lot of CC and also a lot of synergy between blast finishers and fields.
hanks for the replies guys, really appreciate it;) I like mesmer play style but I feel that the engineer is a more useful champ overall :/ still can’t make up my mind :/
actually mesmer has it easier securing stomps
some examples
portalstomp
phaceretreat+ blink
f4
any stealth
chaos storm aegis proc stomp
etc
and mesmer is better in pvp if: ur team coordinates with u and u play rly rly top tier and can manage all ur supports(portal, securing stomps, interrupting stomps(of enemys) , bursting someone down, etc)
if ur team is bad, so will the mesmer be. (he wont be bad but he will be insanely limited)
ah and about the mesmer beeing bad at pointholding, yea so is thief, still in most top tier teams, its cause there r several roles in pvp, mesmer and thief r roamers for example, cant hold points well tho
meanwhile an engi can both do awesome when ur team is bad, or when ur team is good
engi also is easier to play than a shattermesmer(wich is the only viable mesmer build(i wont count lockdown as no1 ever took and managed w it in tournaments, not that i know at least))
also its a pain to lvl mesmer in normal ways..
its all depending on ur own style tho, if u like mesmer style more, go for it, altho u gonna hate lvling it, if u rly like it, dont give up till 80, lvling is just hell as mesmer…
Greetings, both of my mains are Engineer and Mesmer. I love them both equal and have almost 4k h expirience in PvE… sigh I have no life … uhm cough btt:
The Engineer has great AoE (5 tagets!), vuln stack and damage and is very flexible in his role. He can also grant stealth up to 20 sec and buff high amount of might too, even reflection or at least projectile defense is in his kitten nal. He lacks in stability wich is his only downside imo. Great in dungeons, best for open world zerg farm, extremly hard to master. Definitly to most complex and hardest class to play in PvE.
The Mesmer has great survivablity, single target damage, now with Mantra of Pain (since last patch wich made it AoE, aswell as the interrupt mantra) even decent AoE. He has a 100% reflection uptime, fast reacting condi removes, and boon remove wich is very rare and can become very handy for retaliation and protection (wich is removed a passive +50% damage increase for the pt, in theory :P). Also has the best dps elite in the game – Time Warp, wich increases the party DpS for 10 sec by 50%~. This can generate huge passive damage.
Both classes do well in every aspect of PvE, however zerging is much harder with mes and solo champs is normally harder with engi.

Engi has Mesmer beat in almost every catergory, even reflect

Just no.

both work well and both are really fun to play, but ignoring accepted meta for both classes, engi is easier solo.
you can trait to go FT/HGH and roll with a constant 10 might (from FT trait)/easy on-demand 20+ stack solo (w/ HGH). allows you to gear up a in non-zerk/assassin gear and still do great damage.
can also run a pure zerk regen/bomb build that does nice damage and is super-sustainable (while in bomb kit).
