grenades.. pointless?
I use them at close range for a guaranteed hit and yes, often you hit people with it if they chase you. I don’t see the Grenade Kit as a long range weapon in WvW/PvP.
Hello my frands! Vee Wee here, #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!
Great question my frand! Usually at longer distances, you use your Pistol/Rifle/Elixir Gun auto attack! The reason is because these are attacks guaranteed to hit and proc Incendiary Powder! If you’re a power build and don’t run Incendiary Powder, your rifle autos will hurt! 2k+ on lightly armored targets! Grenades are best at medium to close range!
Wahoo! Bye frands!
2k hits on rifle? what build does this?? everything in the power line is bombs
Hello frands! Vee Wee here, #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!
Here is the power build I run! 2k crits easy on Elementalists, Necromancers, Thieves, and any other class that doesn’t have armor!

Vee Wee is right in general but there are lots of times nades at range work extremely well.
Grenades are great at range IF you can predict where the enemy is heading and drop them where they will be (running over bridges, thru choke points etc make it easy to hit targets). And in siege situations they work extremely well as the enemy is relatively “fixed”.
Grenades are great when the enemy is dense like a big blob at range or taking a Lord room. Little chance in the heat of everything they will see the nade spam and you hit a huge number of targets (especially with power). Poison grenade can be quite important.
In medium and small fights at extreme range, nades work well when another party member has already engaged a target but otherwise. . . shoot em!
Trouble with shoot em is you don’t tag enough targets for LOOT BAGS. Vee Wee has everything an engineer could want so maybe he forgets about bags
First, if traited, the range is really great and ridiculous for taking out and harassing stationary targets (like someone who just won’t leave that trebuchet).
Grenades also offer an psychological element in WvW that allows you to control movement of folks, to a degree. The AoE circles that they see cause people to move and even panic at times. Poison Grenades used to be super awesome for this until they were patched. They are still decent for traffic control and in choke points.
And as someone else alluded to, if you are in a good run path you can auto run/rear view mirror to discourage people from following you as you chuck them over your shoulder, though generally bombs with their “set it and forget it” style (and having smoke and glue) are easier to accomplish the same thing.

I hate to toot my own horn but I’m pretty kitten good with nades. I’ve played almost 8.5k engi games in pvp since release, 90% of which is with a nade kit. I love me some nades!
It’s pretty hard to land them in PvP, and sometimes they’re bound to miss just by their nature. The best way to land them is to practice, obviously. But knowledge of the game helps a lot as well. It’s kind of pointless to expect to land a grenade a million miles away at a target out of combat.
ALSO, if you haven’t already, turn off camera shake, use fast cast ground targeting with indicator and turn on free camera in your options! This will help a LOT with grenades!

you only need to be able to land freezy nades, when you do the rest are free hits

I wouldn’t recomment pointlessly throwing freeze nades to land other nades. Freeze nades can often be a fight changer since chill is OP as hell.
Not trying to say it’s a bad idea, but I would definitely not get into the habit of trying to replace good ol’ nade aim with a freeze off cooldown…

I usually run Tool Kit, but bring out the nades in bigger havoc groups. I found that it’s pretty easy to judge where a person will go and how they’ll try to avoid. You won’t hit with them all but you can pretty much direct people to certain directions as they try to avoid your red circles. I played a ton of MOBA games and primarily used characters with skillshots; nades aren’t much different, and are easier in some ways due to the spammable nature of them. Learn to lead your target; use 1 to close off a path (or cause them to hesitate), which will open an opportunity to hit them with 2 or 5.
Also turn on fast-cast if you haven’t already.

What is the idea behind turning off camera shake?
I understand the other two.

i didnt mean to imply you should throw freezy nades on cd for the hell of it, just that if there is 1 thing about nades you need to learn to play, its how to hit your freezy nades (and the next would be how to hold someone in the poison fields and the timing on throwing poison nades)

i know for me, its the same thing as why i hate action movies that abuse it as a cheap trick for tension… your brain has to process and edit out the shaking in addition to aiming, ballparking cds, knowing where to position yourself at any given instant, ignoring particle spam, and watching boons/condis… and i have enough trouble as it is just watching someones boons/condis in a 1v1, i dont need to add more interference if i can help it
