how do you counter rangers in pvp
Shield 4 helps a lot. I’m no expert Engie, though, so I will defer further advice to others.
For cele rifle with nades/toolkit/elixir S:
Selfstealth and magnet pull him. Some ranger are using the trait that the pet is pulled instead of them so do not use rifle #4 before you do not CC him with other stuff (Turret explode for example)
Go into close combat and condi bomb him. Many pew pew LB ranger have poor condi removal. If they switch to GS kite them. They are easy to kite with GS
If you play with Elixir gun, autoattack with elixir gun until you are in close combat. Weakness is very strong against them.
They also use troll unguent as healing skill. Save you poison to counter this.
Most of the time a very easy fight.
Do not random dodge. If you are smart you can watch the pet and save 1 dodge for the fear.
Thanks for the response I have tested this rotation and this seems to be helping a lot more. In most situations I kill or force rangers to run away.
I am using rifle with bombs, nades, EG and celestial amulet, so I don’t have block or stealth. But the EG autoatack with its weakness is great against this LB rangers. Their damage really go down with weakness, and they’re forced to engage close combat, which isn’t a good option for them either.

I know a guy that runs Fortified turrets. Healing turret and Rifle turret. They give 4 seconds of reflective shields around your turrets when put down, means if you’re skilled you can chain 8 seconds of it. He’s very very good though so idk if this works for everyone. Also don’t know if it will work any good in Spvp. It’s hilarious against rangers though. “Why are you hitting yourself?”

smokefield + [Acid Bomb OR Jumpshot OR Big old Bomb] == ???

Actually now I’ve changed to TK, nades and elixir S. I was weak on defense with that setup. I keep trying to use the bomb kit, since I love how it works, but I felt like needing more defense, since with that you don’t have blocks, invul and invisibility (not without using fields). Maybe I should replace the grenades to make the bomb kit work better, but in that case I still prefer the grenades.
But the smoke bomb just will be good if the ranger is close to you, which is not always the case. But when you’re able to force the guy come close to you, of course will be a great idea. I didn’t try to use smoke field + jumpshot, but this will certainly give you stealth. Although if you deal damage, you’ll be revealed.
But yeah, these 3 skills will make you stealth, if used inside the smoke field and you don’t deal damage: acid bomb, big oil bomb, or jumpshot.
A long time ago, I used to run grenades, bomb and rocket boots. So when I needed to leave a fight, I just drop a smoke bomb and then rocket boots and was launched far from the fight and in stealth.
Play in their face avoid rapid fire at all costs without that their dmg is very poor.1nce they’ve used rapid fire lay the pressure down.
Engage with stealth if u can(not required you can close gap with toolkit #4
Toolkit#5-3rifle#23(optional cc rifle #4)-nades nice opener^^
Notice if they have shared anguish they will immune cc in that case net shot first and repeat combo
Play in their face and use line of sight if you make a mistake
Practice makes perfect
Best thing to do if they have Shared Anguish is open with stealth IMO. Stealth, use Magnet Pull. If you pull them, great, start your dps combo rotation. If you pull their pet, run up to them while you still have stealth and use TK 3. At this point, most LB rangers will panic and dodge out of instinct, take this time to drop Box O’ Nails which will make their pet even slower at catching up after to pulled it away. Once they’ve dodged, use Rifle 4 and dps rotation. Net shot compliments grenades and grenades bring condi pressure which most LB rangers can’t deal with, so make sure you land net shot at all costs then follow up with at least Grenades 2. If you don’t run Elixir S you can simply try opening by running up with TK block at the ready, but the stealth really helps in landing Magnet Pull since it has a really obvious animation unless you hide it with either stealth or obstruction.
I really advise you to look at Backpack’s engi guide because it really is helpful and most of those tips come directly from his video. Once you get the basics, it is a lot easier to come up with new things mid combat.
I am new to engi and really enjoy it but am struggling in spvp with rangers specifically they just melt me with their lb 2 spamming. I am running a celestial build 6/0/0/4/4 with names and toolkit.
As a Ranger in WvW, I can never kill an Engineer unless they’re upscaled. Why? They have WAY too many survival/escape/movement abilities on a cooldown that is WAY too short!
Soon as you’re in range, you lose all your hp from push, pull, stun, knockback, then as soon as you turn to fight with some stability on, they’ve traveled accros half the map while blocking all incoming damage.
I once chased an Engineer from South to North on a borderland map, unable to touch him. I think Ranger’s need to have no cooldown on swapping weapons :P
Interrupt, reflect, block, invuln, stay behind something, get out of range – pick one ^^

As a ranger player, I would reccomend sticking close to your turrets, and pulling them in if you can. (That is if you are playing turrets.) The only times I’ve been able to 1v1 turret engis is if I can get them away from their turrets. And as said before, if you can some reflects up, that will hurt the ranger BAD. It really sucks to take a face full of your own rapid fire.
I am just starting to get into engi, and don’t know a whole lot, but taking out rangers can be done fairly easily. (either that or I am just a terrible player :P )
It’s the chain I beat you with until you

Don’t be a turret noob. Even worse, don’t be a fortified turret noob.
Just dodge/block/line of sight or whatever the rapid fire while closing the distance. Once in melee spam skills and watch them melt.
Bonus points if you proc their shared anguish with magnet so you can cc with rifle. Dodge pet f2 if you can but it’s not a huge deal. The wolf fear is problematic though so avoid eating it.
Letting a ranger freecast is silly so if you do that you can’t complain about their dps.
If they do the knockback into Rapid Fire, stealth and gapclose (rifle 5).
You can remove Shared Anguish/Hide in Plain Sight with Magnet, then immediately Overcharge into Throw Wrench, Net Shot, and watch if they block. If they do, perfect time to throw Poison nades.
You can also Immob without warning into Grenade Barrage if you are close enough.
Wolf fear is rather inconvenient if you get hit by it during the Rifle 4 self-knockback though.
Watch the GS animations, and tbh Engi has a better chance in melee because of the zero-range grenade snap pressure. You can weave in and out of his avator to screw up LB skills while throwing crap at your feet.
