This is interesting, a lot of new Engineers seem to really latch onto the Flamethrower as their “weapon of choice” I used it a lot while leveling up, but haven’t gotten hooked on it at level 80. Then again I haven’t tried it with full Zerker gear since they changed Flame Blast!
Jade Quarry
It’s a sub par weapon, but my god is it an amazing weapon. Definitely doesn’t compare in power to grenades for damage or bombs for support, but when it comes to feeling like a bad kitten that’s the kit to go for. Of course new players latch on to it. Why wouldn’t they?

This is the reason why you guys can never figure out how to use the FT. IT IS VERY MUCH A CONDI WEAPON, if not more so than it is a power weapon because really, how much damage can you do with it in a power build anyway?

It’s neither a power or a condition weapon. It’s a flashy weapon. The damage sucks both condition and power wise. Trying to use it for damage is just screwing yourself.

Yeah the ft is pretty impressive to look at just needs something more. My ft changes make #2 a blast finisher #5 a short smoke field and #1 small buff in damage or a faster attack speed shorten the channel or something.

Half true, FT is neither full dmg or condi weapon, its very meh at both by itself. FT is more of an Utility. or at least that’s how i use it.
- personally I 90% of the time i ignore #1, the animation is more treating than the dmg it does, and also it’s flashy animations makes it hard to see the enemy’s animations and therefore harder to dodge key skills.. but even this can provide utility on group fights by using the AoE to kill mesmer illusions/pets.
- on power build does decent dmg 6k+ if used correctly, it’s biggest advantage is the slow movement of the skill, which u can use as a combo to burst.
- Great Utility, 2nd CC if you’re using rifle and it times perfectly with overcharged, giving you enough time to get up, run to the person and CC for a second time, sometimes interrupting key skill such as heals. also, with some practice you can use this to reflect skills back to its target, such a freeze granade, static shot, killshot, rapid fire etc
- is bad.. but even this has some use, drop down on top of defeated players to prevent them from ressing or also in the middle of point in PVP, and with some lucky blast finishers it will maybe provide some AoE might.
- is the main reason i take FT over TK. you can use this as a stomp finisher making it easy to finish off guardians, warriors, necro, engi and rangers as well as kitten off hammer warriors
Conclusion, use FT as your main dmg source and you will be disappointed. but this skill can provide great utility making it good. at least on sPvP

Incendiary Ammo makes it a really good condi weapon. I have quite a few builds that utilize the FT to might stack and burst condis. On it’s own it’s not the most effective way to play but combined with another weapon or kit, it’s a great enabler.

I think the best set is the Rampager for the flamethrower, sinds it benefits from both power, condition damage and high crit rate. This cause the flamethrower to inflict many bleeds on multiple targets while burning them and put a constant pressure with high sustained damage.
the problem with condi is that burn is duration and not stacking, so as long as their IS a burn, that is what matters. your main damage comes from DD from FT#1 and FT#2, and those are power based attacks.
hit 50% crit, and then stack power, hit 3k power, start stacking condi.
if you start stacking condi, you also ought to stack healing power (using shaman amulets instead) and roll with the FT and the EG and use Phineus Poe’s build.
the FT’s “niche” is fast hitting crits, so use sigils like fire, or earth, or air in combo with battle.

With a very survivable build, I was able to hit 2k Condition Damage with the FT in WvW the other day. With Sup Sigil of Earth and Sup Sigil of Corruption on my p/s, I was able to apply quite a bit of condition damage through gates, to zergs (each tick can hit 5, then as they move, those 5 change), and had quite a bit of control.
No HGH and 25 stacks of might, pretty kitten impressive. And fun as heck. Just don’t try to take dredge with it… they are immune to the 800-per-tick burns.

If flamethrower is so bad can you please recommend a build that is newish engineer friendly. I like damage and I like surviving lol.
BTW mostly solo PvP hot joins. Maybe you could show me a dueling build and a 4v4 or 5v5 build thanks.

10-30-0-20-10 : Juggernaut was the key one there.
4x Sup Runes of Altruism, 2x Sup Runes of Water.
Sup Sigil of Corruption, Sup Sigil of Strength (Swap for 3 stacks every 9 seconds).
I use p/s for the extra blocks and the blast finisher, so with the fire field from FT#4-Blast the healing turret (dropping it makes 3 stacks anyway) and the shield #4 skill for 3+3+3+7+3(from the swap) and then repeat the swap and heal when available. I also use the omonomberry creme for +20% boon duration for a total additional boon uptime of 70%. So a 15 second instance of might becomes 25.5 seconds.
It is a bit over-focused, but I did want to see if it could be done… and I reached 25 stacks, without HGH several times. With the sigil of corruption fully stacked, full Karma Rabid (equivalent) gear + Trinkets (with a few Rampagers), Master Maintenance Crystal (all that toughness becomes even more useful) and an adequate amount of “in combat” status (for the Sigil of Strength to trigger) I stayed at over 2k for the better part of an hour with no HGH.
I am not a huge fan of HGH, tbh, it locks you into at least 2 potions and whatever kit you are focusing on and I would rather have at least 2 kits, with one being the tool kit and the slightly-less-than-perfect Elixir S on my bar.
This build sacrifices almost all base power, period. There is 100 in the traits, 875 in the maxed out stacks of might once you build them, but the FT is often considered to not be a great high-damage weapon anyway. But even swapping once you have full corruption stacks to even a sigil of earth resulted in EPIC bleeds, and interestingly, I tried this full CD monster in Orr with the elixir gun… and it was fun as heck and melted zombies as quickly as a crit grenade build.
Kinda wish there was a Juggernaut option for the Elixir gun…
Oh, and to the poster who is getting healed every other press of #1, switch to Mixed Berry Pie and get heal for ~375 every other proc, as they have no internal cool down.

To change the topic a bit from FT, I would recommend taking a look at medkit or turret for your heal. Elixir H is a little underwhelming even when traited. (Or really just medkit and turret are really kitten good).

it’s got one condition pal. sorry. elixir gun is more of a condition weapon.
As true as Odin’s spear flies,
There is nowhere to hide.
I’m a member of the FT-is-both-condition-and-power-weapon club. It does only apply 1 condition (burn) and stacking it only adds duration. However, FT deals more damage to burning foes, so keeping the burns rolling increases the straight damage. Also, its #5 skill is a blind. That’s 2 conditions that benefit from +condition duration. It fires very fast, offering multiple crit chances, which makes it ideal for stacking precision & +crit damage. And with such frequent crits, it synergizes well with bleed-on-crit type sigils and traits like Incendiary Powder, Precise Sights, and Sharpshooter. And if you’re able to stack bleeds this way, they’ll benefit from +condition damage. Which also benefits those burns we talked about stacking. And burning is the highest damage condition in the game.
So let’s recap. FT benefits from:
+ condition duration
+ condition damage
precision
+ crit damage
This is why I run a combo or Berserker/Rampager gear with FT. They all add to its effectiveness.

You are thinking of the Omnomberry Ghosts, and yes, they were. But according to the wiki, the mixed berry pies do not have that cool down, I guess it could be wrong.

Knights (pow/pre/TOUGH) and Rabid (pre/tough/COND) items are more beneficial, over all, to the flamethrower in PvE than Zerker/Rampager.
One of the biggest things to get used to when using the FT is taking damage, and letting it happen, and getting used to the on proc effects of crit weapons.
Seras, you are right, a burning foe means an extra 10% dmg to FT#1, but it does NOT matter how hard that burn ticks for, simply that it is there. Each tick of your FT#1 can do more DD than the burning condition alone, if geared properly. All you need is for it to be there.
Incendiary Powder, thus, is meant (in FT builds, specifically, not talking about other applications) as another source of prolonging a foes burning, not at adding damage just because of the burning tick.

I always specced cond dmg as I leveled with FT. Worked great. But that’s leveling. I find that as I stack more and more pow/prec gear I’m killing stuff faster. I’m slowly realizing that cond dmg isn’t as important to the FT as I initially thought. It’s good to have some imo, since there’s a lot of condition potential from using FT, but it doesn’t have the punch pow/prec does.
