spvp prot injection vs. backpack regen
I use both in pvp. Just depends on how I’m feeling.
I prefer PI, I think both are great traits though.
Use whichever you feel makes the most difference for you, honestly
I stick to BR i feel its a good dps mitigation and im in a kit almost always…
3 seconds out of every 5 assuming you get CC’d every 5 seconds(some times it feels that way) it could be up 60% of the time, while i think im in a kit atleast 80%+ so based on that i kinda stick with the kit regen. I figure i get more bang for my trait since its pretty much always active.
but i honestly havnt given PI much of a shot i pretty much die and blame it on not having my regen…

Swapping to a kit applies a lingering (5 seconds?) on backpack regenerator. You get ticks when you’re not even in a kit as long as you have been recently.

In most of my bunker builds, i have a minimum of 20 in alchemy and pick up both.
PI + Stabilize armor is sexy, it actually takes them “op” stun warriors a lot longer to kill me when i eat their stun than if i would have avoided it.
BR with healing bombs gives me about 500hp per sec (spamming bombs and eating all of the heals). On top of near perma regen from healing turret and eg#5, i effectively double my hp (not including the water field burst heals.)
If I’m going to run bunker build I’ll go 10/0/10/20/30 taking stabilized armor, protection injection, backpack regenerator, armor mods and leg mods.
If I’m running a zerker build I always take protection injection because it’s only a 10 pt investment, it’s not a matter of if BR is better I simply don’t have the extra points available in my build.
Without a good meta viable stun breaker at the moment prot. injection is a necessity for just about any build. Especially with all the stun lock warriors running around right now. You will also melt to stun burst combos from thief, mesmer and ele without it. I’ve also tried it in combination with stabilized armor for 50% damage reduction when stunned. It is amazing to just eat their burst and still have a chance to fight back before you are downed. The only weakness is infinite fear condition necros. I have no idea how to counter them as an engi outside of some narrow specific build that would not be viable in the meta.

backpack regenerator was my invention kitten it! Hate to be vain, but it’s true. Took me forever to figure out that trait wasnt a piece of kitten. It’s absurdly strong when coupled with heal turret’s regen.
And to answer the question it really depends on what you’re up against and what you’re likely to be doing in your comp (which is often determined by what map it is).
You have to be able to gauge how strong protection injection would be in most situations versus how strong backpack regen is in most situations and what build you’re running. It also depends on how well you can dodge.
Protection injection is obviously great against heavy burst (except mesmers). It’s also saved my kitten a lot against stun warriors (2 or more warriors that you’re pretty sure are stun and I’d recommend prot injection). Heavy burst is often what gets an engi killed in a team fight.
Personally I REALLY love backpack in most scenarios. The better you get with your dodges (they’re never perfect) the less you need protection injection. Considering I also run adventure runes I get an kitten of them with invigorating speed. If you’re using rocket boots I prefer backpack regen because I rarely feel like I need it.
Finally, I’d value protection injectio more in a team queue vs solo queue because coordinated bursts with this stun heavy meta are VERY hard to deal with without it. They’ll happen enough to where it might just eek out better than backpack in a lot of cases.
@$20 an hour! It’s worth it!

I agree with everything you said after this point. Lol. You didn’t seriously run this trait until June 25th. Nobody did. And rightfully so, it was underperforming before June 25th.
June 25th Patch Notes
Alchemy
Backpack Regenerator: This trait has been reworded so that it doesn’t imply that it adds the regeneration boon. This now scales with healing power from 125 to 192 (1500 healing power).
What’s not written here in these notes is that switching to a kit activates backpack regenerator for 10 seconds. Yep. Before it would only tick if you were sitting in a kit. If you say you have 60% uptime of kits, pre-patch, this trait just got buffed to 100% uptime. Every Engi, NA & EU started noticing this trait on June 25th. Or when you specifically invented it, did you mean you coded & re-wrote the tooltip?

Teldo had been using it since I started watching him on twitch but I’m really not sure when that was or whether it was before that patch or not – I would suspect so. Anyways, thanks for all the input.

Wait, seriously? This changes everything…
