Engis were always the least played profession.
Engineers have a few things that make them unappealing to a lot of players. Weapons and backpieces don’t tend to show on them because of kits and they tend to do -terrible- if not utilizing some complex setup.
Elementalists are similar, complexity-wise, but make up for that by having great special effects you can toss around and having a really good game-feel. Engineers just don’t have that same game-feel to a lot of players.
Don’t take any of that as fact, by the way, that’s just my opinion on why engineers are under-represented.
hi hi engineer here:D idk bout u guys but I am glad they underrepresented.
There are probably fewer Engineers because they aren’t ‘the best’ at anything. They can fill just about any role needed and can provide great support. They are great at applying conditions as well. Perhaps they are just misunderstood, and therefore underrepresented.
I agree that with kits and few weapon selections the aesthetic quality of the engineer isn’t as high as it is with other professions, but that is what’s unique about them. They aren’t the flashiest, but sure are the quirkiest.
I love my engineer because I can change a couple utilities and have a totally different play style. I never get bored because of this. I have multiple sets of armor so I can be a support class, condition bomber, HGH might stacker, or burst SD build. I think if more people knew of the versatility the profession has more people would be willing to play them as their ‘main’.
With no disrespect, I’d say the opposite is the case. I started as an Engi with from the 3-day head start and have played one ever since, and I’ve never seen more Engi’s than now.
In the early days, we were a fun, but horribly bugged profession (we just didn’t know any better). Now, with changes from Anet, we are a viable (and still fun!) choice.
I am here ._.!!!!
Proud player of : team [uA] – team [TGI]. Australia base, now recruiting.
It’s the hobosacks, probably. They are a particular level of unappealing, and it generally runs off most new engies. They get there thinking “Oh this will be great!”, then realize that their character is not only wearing a hideous hobosack, but looks completely idiotic in the process. At that point they usually roll a ranger or thief :-P
I am on Drakkar Lake(EU, german server).
I don’t see ANY engineers besides me in higher areas or dungeon groups(usually my daily CoF P.1 run or sometimes catacombs).
It is kind of sad. On top of being an engineer I also playing an Asura which I don’t see like…at all. WHEN I see an Engineer it is usually human in like 20+ runs from CoF(usually did 1 per day) I saw 1(!) engineer.
The most I see: warriors, guardians and I had a discussion on playing my engineer..I like my engineer but some people can be REALLY picky. I usually tell them that there’re other professions beside warrior and guardian(as it usually is one of those two who questions my power).
This might be the issue: people not taking engineers in their groups. I had one guy who demanded only heavy armor classes for his group…but those elitists I don’t care about. Not all people were like that but 1 or 2 were wondering(and are stupid as the engineer deals good damage in groups..bombs, nades and all that ).
JQ! Not all of us are zerk warrs or mesmers! :P
Quidquid Latine Dictum Sit, Altum Videtur
I was forced to choose my guild or my engineer. Patch a few months ago screwed my engie’s build irreparably so i probably made the wrong choice.
We are an endangered species and hopefully it stays that way..if they break the elementalist to the point of no return thats my new main..i live for challenge and Engineer is the epitomy of that.
SF engineers represent!
I find that the engineer profession doesn’t have the immediate appeal that some other classes have, which is why you see so few of em. Instead, we seem to be a class that grows on people and convinces others to roll one as an alt as they play alongside other engineers and see just how great they can be.
Sorrow’s Furnace
I’m on FA and while they are not popping out of the woodwork or anything, there are plenty on FA server.
I won’t lie, the hobbosack drove me and a few others away sometimes but always come back. This class may look ugly with kits but its too fun.

What kind of elitists guild is this?
I’d always say play what you like and if people are being idiots well…can’t be helped.
MMO populations nearly always favor ranger/knight/mage types, so it’s not surprising. Add in a reputation for bugged abilities and traits and you’ve got a very hipster profession.
That, and for a long time there were so few engineer players who could put up a fight in WvW/PvP that people just got used to beating them. That memory is hard to erase, even after engineer players have proven them to be a difficult but effective profession. Their current reputation as a “hardcore player only” profession also doesn’t help, and is again only partly off.
I stopped playing mine months and months ago. I’ll bring her out of the closet when Anet fixes and buffs the class properly.
The truth is that I was never very good as an engi. You got to be really skilled to be effective in WvW. I suck at split second ground-targeting and after much testing nades really are a requirement in WvW.
Anet really needs to buff / rework turrets in a major way. I got into engi because I liked the idea of turrets. I’ve tried so many builds to get those turrets working in WvW and it’s always a disaster. They are destroyed the MOMENT you drop them. Their damage output is pathetic, and they are hard to use. I would love to see a grandmaster trait that makes turrets invulnerable (but with a self destruct time limit) the way spirt weapons used to be. Or perhaps if they swapped out the useless thumper turret and replaced it with an oil slick turret that oozed oil causing permanent knock downs at choke points. If they buff turrets, I’ll play again.

Elementalists are not complex. Most eles run a rotation like any other class. In terms of how complex the build can get 3 kits with healing turret P/S will give you the most complex build in the game in terms of what you can do and what it takes to pull it off.
On BG I see other engies all the time. Its not rare but the server is packed so who knows what the population break down actually is.
On a personal note imho I think players will come to this class if they want a change of pace or get tired of the rotation (main reasons I did) . This class is flexible enough to house quite a few play styles. I also find grenades to be the best weapon in the game. Since I actually have to stay situationally aware and guess where my target is going to move. No other weapon set actually requires me to do as much to land DPS.

Where are they you ask? Most of the engies moved to fa, you can’t take a step there without walking into a turret :/
Edit: Also have a high number of charrs
There seems to be a growing population in Tarnished Coast too! Asura Engineer all the way!
I think engineers are the most unconventional of the classes. Their weapon abilities are relatively weak and limited, compared to other classes. Rather, their potency comes largely from unlocking new kits and deployables. And unlike Elementalists that can switch between attunements in combat, an Engineer’s abilities are tied to their utilities, which must be carefully prepared before engaging.
Asura Engineer, checking in!

Not to sound too full of myself, but engies are a tough profession to play, and the payoff is “fun” rather than being the very best at anything in particular. Look around the forums a bit and you can see that a lot of players aren’t interested in fun as much as gear grinding, perfect dungeon runs, shinies… etc. Not that there’s anything wrong with any playstyle, but if you want to show off your legendary, for instance, kits won’t help you. If you want to look snazzy, the hobosack won’t help you. And if you want to quickly be the best at a profession, nothing about an engie will help you.
I love my engie.
People just aren’t fabulous enough to be able to strut a hobo sack and make it work.
Kittens, Kittens everywhere!
Honestly it’s pure aesthetics of the class. I actually like the way it plays but..always a but, I hate that my weapon choices are only guns and I really hate those back packs. If I had some weapon choices or choices for different looks it would be my main.
Asura Engineer of Sea Of Sorrows.. Nice to meet all Engineers here!
I literally abandoned all my other professions after I lvled an Engineer, other professions are just mats farmers now lol..
Them kits does look hideous but I can live with it since im an Asura, its so small haha.. All in all, I am loving this profession the most!

I dont play an engineer… I tried, but it made my brain hurt. But I think you are right.
From the looks of your character, to the complexity and being jack of all trades master of none… People stay away.
I would like to try one some day I suppose. I liked the idea of a grenade engi, but thats a ton of friggin clicking.

So then don’t be a grenadier. The joy of an Engi is that we have so many viable builds and playstyles. Despite grenades being one of our best/accepted zerk builds, there are plenty more. Engis are (imo) for players who want some spunk, some pizazz in their toon. Maxing out the dps meter shouldn’t be your primary concern. Have fun!

are engie an endangered profession or something?
except me i havent seen any around
Engineers are the mechanical Ritualist of guild wars 2 . why there are so few, I’m not sure. However, they are the only class that stimulate both left and right cerebral hemispheres of one’s brain. If Auguste Compte could conduct a survey with guild wars players being the population parameter, he would most likely conclude that those who choose the engineer class are the only players whom experienced all the following:
In the left cerebral hemisphere,
Rationality
Objectivity
Reality-based
Sky-diving with a parachute.
In the right cerebral hemisphere,
Risk-taking
Impetuous
Fantasy-based
Pompous wind bagginess
In other words, those who play ele and warrior are those who are only impetuous. ( acting without care)
