Balance developer Mesmer x Guardian
Everyone including mesmers : “oooh, PU is OP !”
Everyone including guardians : " oooh, burns is OP !"
And both of em say ’we’re gonna be so nerfed.’
I think that’s the gist of it.
PU is pretty op…and burns are pretty bad, but I honestly don’t even think burn guardian is all that bad, burn engi is so much worse imo
Good child syndrome.
I’ve had a guard since launch. Played it off and on. Never really got into it, because I like a challenge. The guard always felt strong. Useful. Needed. It wasn’t hard to play a guard. PVP or PVE, same thing. Powerful field manipulation, powerful support skills, plenty of active defenses, slightly low damage but it was fine. Everyone is glad to have a guardian around. It was a good class.
Other classes, they get buffed and nerfed a lot. They go from OP to UP, but guardians are in a good place. They’re the good class, so they don’t need as much attention. They aren’t lacking as many things as other classes. I mean sure, condi guard was a long ways off for awhile, but otherwise they were solid. You don’t want to suddenly dump everything onto the good class. They’re already fine, and you don’t want to mess up what is already fine.
So, everyone else gets attention. Mesmers especially, because memsers were not a good class. Mesmers were a bad class, always being picked on by the thief. But now, the tables have turned. Mesmers now pick on thieves. Power is shifting drastically, but the Guardian is a good class, so it doesn’t need attention.
/end musing
For those unaware, “Good Child Syndrome” is the tendency for a child in a multiple-children household to be emotionally neglected and starved for attention because their birth order and good behavior has left their parents to focus all their attention on the other, more problematic children. Usually it is a middle child that suffers this, as the eldest is always venturing into new problems and the youngest needs the most emotional support.
To be fair, Guardian’s aren’t wholly neglected. Feel My Wrath is a very powerful skill which makes all other forms of quickness pale in comparison. The trait synergy for hammer has increased substantially. The Radiance line now gives me constant fury that I didn’t have before. Condi guards are actually a thing now. The additional points mean we can go into full virtues for a useful toolbox, honor for endurance and some group buffs/heals, and valor if you want a more defensive line.
Its not all bad. There are some traits that I would work around/change, though.
I don’t think that burn guardians are OP. I’ve tried it with one of my guardians, in both PvP and WvW and after a week or so I returned to my power zerker medi guard build.
I don’t even think that guardians are meta in the current PvP landscape: only Orange Logo uses them and in the two latest finals (World Tournament in Colgne and the ESL monthly finals this week) they were trampled at 0/4 and 0/4. In the WT OL became aware of how useless the (second) burn guardian was and they swiched to Mesmer, but wasn’t enough.
After the traits changes in the patch of Jun 23 everyone was amazing about “how much spike damage can deal now”, “Mesmers are OP”, “burning damage is OP”, and so, but the reality is that the two strongest tournaments in the last month were won by heavy sustain builds, which was the same case as in previous metas.
Sure, I can’t win against a good mesmer or a good burning guardian in the current patch, but I can still outskill bad ones, and taking in consideration that probably both of them will end nerfed I find preferable to not invest (emotionally or materially) in those builds, because the most the nail excels the harder the hammer will finally hit.
What bothers us most isn’t that guardian doesn’t get some attention. What bothers us most is how little the attention the guardian would need to fix 90% of its problems

yea….
i happen to play both LOL

Honestly, this. The class has so much potential, but just a small handful of silly design choices (a melee class with very limited CC & mobility, the apparent obsession with projectile-based melee attacks, a shield that feels more like a wet noodle than a shield, etc.) are really holding it back so hard, and it really wouldn’t take all that much effort to fix these issues.

Holding it back so hard from what? We are viable in every game mode and are welcomed by all parties. I agree there are things to fix and tweak, but when I’m on my other characters party members regularly ask me to switch to my guardian.
80 Guardian, Mesmer, Ranger
Having us wanted in dungeons because of our elite shout is not viability. Its slavery
At least you are wanted at all. There are classes that get kicked for just showing their face.
When a class is already doing pretty well, then yes you are going to have to expect devs to give a bit more attention to those classes that are underperforming. Both guards and eles are strong classes and do well in most game modes.
I think that is part of the reason the devs are having a harder time with the elite specs, especially for ele. When you have a class that is great in all game modes what do you do for the elite spec that will not make them grossly overpowered? It’s a tricky business that I do hope they work out.
What do you do for a class that’s great? Fix the issues so we can play more builds viably. And no. We WERE in a good spot. Now we’re in a bad spot. We’re actually getting more issues. We are going backwards. That’s not ok. And saying how bad the situations are for other classes doesn’t excuse the problems with ours. Because there’s some nerfherder on the other forums I’m sure going “Hey be thankful for what you have. At least our shield isn’t like guardians” Its not an excuse because if everybody points the finger somewhere else it just goes in a big circle.
Bad spot? I’ve never heard of guards being kicked from groups or being unwanted. You are hardly in a bad spot. Maybe you have your issues and hopefully these will be addressed, but overall you are still a good class.
No. We are a good few builds. We are not a good class because that would mean everything in our class working right. And compared to where we were we are in a worse spot. Being kicked from groups is being in THE WORST spot and we shouldn’t have to be at that point just for complaints of balance issues to be considered realistic.
You don’t wait until somebody has a fever of 110 to treat them. You give them a gosh darned flu shot before hand.
Please don’t dismiss people for warning of what horrible things could (and are) happening to our class because they have CLEARLY happened to other classes.
We don’t want to be the next Ranger (and dear dwayna theyve already given us the Longbow)
Oh I’m not saying you should just shut up and be happy with your class. I’m very sorry if I gave off that impression. Sure, if there are problems you should speak about them and hopefully the devs will read and address these problems. But still, I think it’s a bit much to say guards are in a bad spot atm.
How do I put this. You know how they gave a buff to litany of wrath a little bit ago? Before that if you pvp’d and you used Litany of wrath. You were in a bad spot(Despite the fact that I personally did and still do rek face with it). Sure GUARDIAN was fine, but YOUR GUARDIAN wasn’t. That’s why it got buffed. I swear a good 1/4 of my guild plays a guardian (just because its cheesy playstyle is so popular). I ask them what build they run and I know for a fact they aren’t all in a good spot because some of their traits are just backwards.
I used to play clerics for the first half a year I played. I changed my playstyle for obvious reasons. I made myself a beautiful zerker build. Specializations came. I got a nerf. Im OK with that. But some of the traits I now look right at and go “No this is not a good spot”.
So sure the class may be in a good spot. But that doesn’t matter a single bit to the individual. And even if its 1/10 the classes builds that aren’t working right that’s ALOT of disgruntled people and that’s why you see so much rage on the Guardian forum right now

Holding it back so hard from being a class that can actually function without requiring assistance to make up for the glaring flaws it has.
