Beta dragonhunter feedback/thoughts thread:
I really like the feel of the Dragonhunter, its great as far as i played it up until now.
The only thing that bugs me a little is the Bow 3. It does too little damage for my opinion even less then an auto attack, yes it deflects projectiles which is really cool. But i am not always going to use it in a defensive manner, so for a skillshot i think the damage should be upped a little so you really feel rewared when you hit an enemy.
Thats a big deal in pvp/ Esports as well. When you see that your favourite player hits a really hard skillshot and it has a great effect there is somewhat of an adrenaline rush. And with this one, well its less then an auto attack and 1 stack of blindness.
Autoattacks rarely hit at 900+distance if someone is moving.
Virtues feel sluggish but that’s probably because playing medi guard we aren’t used to having cast times
Any opinions so far on what type of bow is best? Is condi damage any good with Dragonhunter?
couple of things re: virtues
1. their active effects needs to be applied at the beginning of the cast, rather than the end
2. they need to be usable while channeling renewed focus.
Any opinions so far on what type of bow is best? Is condi damage any good with Dragonhunter?
so far it feels far better as a power/cc weapon than a condi weapon.
A true shot (LB #2) can crit a light armored target for upwards of 5k in marauder amulet, that’s by far the heaviest hitting single ability the guardian has ever had. Even more so than Hammer 2.
I really like how the bow plays, only thing i have to say is maybe tweak the auto attack to attack faster, make it 2/3 of a second instead of 3/4.(might need to lower the damage then if it needs to be balanced). Might make it even more fun to play
Bow skill one feels good but sometimes misses, Skill 2 hits hard but there is a charge on it I feel it should do a bit more damage for the time it takes then again I was using default gear. Skill 3 feels weak and I don’t like it. Skill 4 came in handy a few times and skill 5 is amazing with the condi burn build im running. I REALLY like the spear virtue 1 Virtue 2 I felt slightly underwhelmed by and Virtue 3 will come in handy. I also ran all the traps and liked them better than I thought I would though I do not think I will be using them all at the same time.
I love the traps in pve. Enemies simply fall for them automatically, so they’re pretty much PBAoE DPS.
IMO you should be able to use bow #4 regardless of the direction you’re facing. It just feels so clunky with the way it is currently.
Also rip virtue stomps :[
New Virtues: The cooldowns are just too high.
Bow Skills: The damage and utility are good and it’s a fun weapon. Great for PvE.
The problem is PvP. Kiting is impossible. It just doesn’t work. You end up auto-attacking someone point blank range while they wail on your face, and the immobility of skill 2 doesn’t help. It seems like a secondary weapon at best in PvP.

Not going to fill out my full observation of DH just yet but is anyone feeling that we could immensely benefit from finally getting a trait or utility with +25% movespeed?
It could be just me. Just in my opinion if you want to invest in LB play, you aren’t going to invest as much into VIT and Toughness. So being able to be more mobile is almost crucial to DH. This is just my feelings though so far.

THIS.
DH is weaker then Guardian also because of this.
I can’t access Beta yet but from watching live-streams and hearing others test the LongBow in game the very first thing that i noticed is the horrible sound effects on the LongBow.
The DragonHunter trailer video had some amazing sound effects, but right now it sounds like standard bow like Ranger.
Also, Dragon’s Maw is the worst elite skill in the game. Garbage.

awesome combo of Ring of Warding and procession of blades… killer
Wow what a gimmick the close specialization is. Lol yep not wasting anymore time with it.
My opinion:
Skill 1: Arrow is too slow for a 1200 range attack
Skill 2: Can’t move while using this, seriously ?
Skill 3: Too low dmg, not good for pve
Skill 4: Can only shoot forward, ,maybe just me want to shot it backwards too
Skill 5: Hard to tell, good in pvp if they stay sooo long in the aoe, bad if not. For pve this has kinda weak dmg, but locks non champ enemies, which is nice. Think the lock should be applied earlier, it takes too much time
Virtues:
- Leap have too short range, also can’t get out of immobilize
- Effects should be applied at the beginning like someone said
- Virtue of justice and dat throw.. weak and waste of time
- Virtue of courage is good

everything from a pvp pov:
Longbow:
1: seems fine
2: would be nice to use while moving
3: pls make it a target shot and not a ground target. would be a big QoL improvment
4: you somehow cant target it behind you ( you can do that with war arcing arrow). so lets us use it like warrior LB f1 and 3
5: seems pretty good to me
Traits
they seem kinda boring in general to me. not much love in it. still i think they are good/ok.
new Virtues
seem clunky. its obviously bc im used to instant cast. still some improvements:
F1: make it cripple. currently( if you dont trait it) it does nearly nothing except for giving you a cast time+ you have to hit it. basically a downgrade to normal f1
F2: animation is kinda long for the short range. feels very clunky. i would like to see the range increased to deal with that (900?). its a support downgrade but movement upgrade( if range is a bit more)
F3: looks pretty good. you lose the instant cast but get a really nice block
additional point: i would love to use longbow without having to go into the traitline. its sad that i cant have the weapon without giving up a original traitline for the kinda boring DH traitline
edit:
completly forgot traps. well. i dont actually see them being that useful in pvp. didnt really test them tho. i dont have any improvement ideas. i just dislike traps overall

Dragonhunter is alright, but that’s the problem. They don’t do much other classes already do. Specifcally in sPvP.
Bow 5 feels like it’s effects are played in reverse. The cage comes down after the arrow volley. Especially since you have to channel the full ability it would play much better if it applied the cage on cast and then did volley.
The virtues of very lackluster as well. They don’t really do that much damage in relative to their very long cd. Wings of Resolve should have about a 30 sec cd at the very least and push Shield of Courage down to somewhere between 45-60 sec. Also, Spear of Justice could use a damage boost.
Traps are a complete mess. They are super clunky and almost fully impractical in every scenario. The idea I think they had was to force players to trip them by you applying pressure on them with the bow which would force them to move in on you. The problem is they still don’t have to. The bow does alright damage, but it isn’t anything of much threat that even the ranger can’t already do better, which is saying a lot since the Ranger is considered the weakest class in the game for sPvP. It also just feels unnecessarily clunky to have cast times to plant traps or at least how long the cast times are. They also all do laughable damage. The trap that is meant to be purely damage actually doesn’t really do much of any.
All in all the dragonhunter is extremely underwhelming and there is very little reason to use compared to what you can already do better in other classes.

LB auto attack projectile speed could be buffed but as long as they don’t go the ranger route. It should still remain strafable.

OVERALL IMPRESSION DAY 1:
Virtues:
All seem fine but suffer from the fact you cannot pop them if you are found under pressure and need to use Renewed Focus. Not sure if intended but feels wasted and creates anti synergy with the elite.
Longbow:
- is fine but has the SAME ISSUES AS SCEPTER when it comes to strafing. Urgently needs to be updated
- Feels like it could do slightly more damage as it does root you. Overall ok
- No complaints. ok
- Needs QoL, Why can’t I shoot this behind me like warrior longbow skills that are ground targetted??
- Want less damage backloaded on it. Make the damage over duration slightly higher and reduce end damage if necessary.
Utilities:
Purification: No opinion yet.
Fragments of Faith: No opinion yet
Test of Faith: On paper seems strong but having seen and tested ALL traps this is sorely underpowered.
Procession of Blades: Damage way too low, it is decent in PvE but noone in PvP will ever stay in it and even then the damage is not very good.
Light’s Judgement: No direct opinion, the enemies lose the 25 stack vuln once they leave the field which is awful in pvp.
Dragon’s Maw: Initial damage is good but it needs to do some pulsing damage with the slow as well. Otherwise it feels somewhat weak.
Traits:
Piercing Light: Awful, condi traps is not a thing nor do I anticiapte it will be since you are sacrificing an otherwise more powerful burn utility or condi removal utility for stationary unreliable traps.
Zealous Aggression: Damage modifier can be increased as it is conditional on cripple and the cripple on auto is already conditional. Also if the justiciation is that there are two other traits that facilitate the cripple effect then you realize you are forcing guardians to take a certain set of traits just to make this one work.
Soaring Devastation: No strong opinions, seems fine
Hunter’s Determination: No strong opinions, in theory you could use True Shot and then stomp someone but in practice this does not make any sense because by using longbow you are at range so you would need to walk up, True shot, and then stomp. 1 stack of Stability for 3 seconds is not worth it.
Bulwark: Initial impression is that I like it as is.
Dulled Senses: This is the trait that is part of the pigeonhole effect. This needs to be good on its own and it is not. If you are just using longbow it has no inherent knockback so wtf is the point? You guys merged all the medi traits into 1 since everyone needed to take them in order to be viable at dps and yet here you are doing the same thing all over again.
Hunter’s Fortification: Seems fine, havent used it enough
Heavy Light: Good on its own, highly dislike the fact two other traits rely on you taking this.
Big Game Hunter: No strong opinions, seems fine.

It’s good but the new virtues are worse than the old ones except the spear (imo). Would be nice if we could choose if we wanted the new or old virtues
“leap virtue” should be increased to 900 range…600 just doesn’t feel good/useful
LB auto seams really slow and weak dmg-wise. LB 2 should not root.
MARA (EU) Gunnar’s Hold
for spvp, mace/focus longbow is probably my new favorite spec right now.
SoW, swap to longbow, true shot into JI, soaring devastation leap into smite condition = a 20k burst in about 2 secs
(edited by Darknicrofia.2604)
Here are my thoughts:
I like that it feels like a new class, ive been playing a guard since the release of the game and i felt that i had to learn him from the very beginning, it was fun.
The new trap skill needs a rework. I gurantee that after the first days most people will ignore it. Even if it healed you for full HP the fact that an enemy has to trigger it its troublesome. If i had to suggest something it would be that it should work more like the ranger trap heal.
The longbow true shot skill needs something more...maybe a hold down mechanic that the longer it is hold the more damage it does? I just felt that it is kinda empty the way it is now
The longbow deflection shot i think that it should move slower so it would be easier to deflect stuff.
I think test of faith would be better if it pushed back enemies inside once if they touch the swords thus adding more utility
“leap virtue” should be increased to 900 range…600 just doesn’t feel good/useful
LB auto seams really slow and weak dmg-wise. LB 2 should not root.
LB Auto is the worst. My arrows look slow and tired like they could plop down on the ground mid-flight. xD
How many traps are there on the Guardian? I have not pre-ordered so no idea.
I’ve been online and seen a few around but figured I’d ask.
Johnny Johnny – Ranger (Ehmry Bay)
Hárvey Wallbanger – Alt Warrior (Ehmry Bay)
Virtues are the most underwhelming thing. A huge downgrade from guardian. And traps pale in comparison to the utilities we currently have
Here is my feelings on the Dragonhunter. Oh and some info on the player (me): I play the game casually, I do a lot of WvW and EotM and I am “bad” at it. I don’t go for top DPS specs and I play whatever looks cool. That should give a dev some perspective when looking at my info.
Now for my actual feedback:
Overall, I like it. A B or B- at worst. As soon as I heard “Longbow on Guardians” I was all in. Glad it works all in all. This appealed to me especially as a Ranger main.
- Auto Attack seems to miss when moving around. And I use Longbow and Shortbow on my Ranger, Longbow on my Warrior and Shortbow on my thief and I never had this issue before. So I think it’s accuracy is bugged. Or something.
- Dragonhunters acquired Traps from Rangers. “Lol”. They also inherited all of the bad issues with traps IMO. So I won’t be using any traps personally. I’ll stick with my All Signet setup. But unlike Ranger traps they seem stronger. Except Dragon’s Maw. I don’t see many people using that as is.
- Deflecting Shot reminds me of the Greatsword 3 for Warriors by the whole “arrow reticule” that pops up. But it doesn’t work nearly as good as it does for Warriors w/ Greatsword.
- Hunter’s Ward shouldn’t have a 45 sec cooldown. Maybe 30 but 45 feels too long.
Initial verdict: Not liking it. :\
It’s very muddled, and it can’t decide what it wants to do. I have a bow, and the skills are.. okay. I’m not wow’d by them. The traits mostly support the longbow, but the other half of the spec wants, so badly, to be melee.
Traps. I had several holy kitten moments while using them. I like them for their potency. I hate them for their melee focus. At the same time, I want to dive in with these traps, Wings of Whatever dive in with a healbomb, set traps, and swing for the fences with my greatsword.
But the spec is at odds with itself because of the longbow, and its minor traits try to support it too much, so not using longbow feels like a waste.
“I’m finding companies should sell access to forums,
it seems many like them better than the games they comment on.” -Horrorscope.7632
If hunter’s ward procced the end effect at first shot then maybe the 45 sec CD is warranted.
as it currently is, its a 500 damage skill that roots you that no will catch almost no one with its “ward” effect.
I am forced to use dragon hunter because as soon as I don’t wanna use dragon hunter It uequips my longbow… Seriously if I don’t wanna use dragonhunter and use longbow don’t force that onto me personally I hate dragonhunter specialization and the new virtues and traps I only wanted to use longbow. Please fix this I hope this wasn’t your intent!

A lot of people had this worry and I got the feeling this is how things are going to come to live. If you want to use the new weapon for your class, you HAVE to use the new Elite Trait. It would be nice that once you completed the Elite Trait line, you can use the weapon without equipping the Elite Trait tree but that probably won’t happen.
I got the feeling that for some other classes, equipping the Longbow will change the Profession F1 skills. (I’m thinking of Druids and how they might not have Pets like Rangers.) That’s why I think the new professions and weapons are tethered together.
Deflecting Shot and Symbol of Energy really should be able to be shot behind. Deflecting Shot would be nice for kiting and avoiding a ranged attack.
All the longbow skills don’t do enough damage they feel clunky and unusable
I hate the lockdown on bow#2, would vastly improve the flow for me if we could move
i have 4 k hours on my guard , realy like that profession …
but dragonhunter realy isnt fun at all ,
1) bow attacks WAY to slow ( scepter all over again , i mean give one high dmg low attack speed, the other one high attack speed and low dmg … WHAT EVER make it interesting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
2) the other bow skill will not be used ,to situation bound , especialy skill 3 and 4 are just useless
3) virtues are cool but could use more trait support ( now it feels more like a “virtue specialisation” )
4) traps feel way to weak aswel and not fun to play ( why would i buy hot for dragonhunter;( which is a joke) if i could play trap ranger) ( WHAT MAKES DRAGONHUNTER UNIQUE <> Ranger)
to be honest i realy regret buying hot …. this dragon hunter is a dissapointment all over ( even without that horrible name )
So after playing some pvp, DH is alright. Traps are ok at best (excluding Dragon’s Maw, that one is pretty good). It’s hard to get a viable build with them. The bow I actually like. True Shot hits extremely hard (+5k crits on light targets), Hunter’s Ward is also very powerful. Using the bow with a medi build works well enough. Overall; I like the bow but I feel it needs some tweaks, however the traps and traits are lacking atm.
This is only early impressions though, around 20 games with it.
Heavens Rage
as ppl alrdy have said the f2 and f3 skills got too long cd. the auto attack is too slow, the 3 skill is useless, even if you manage to reflect something with it, also would like the traps to be ground targeted…make it have a short range to not make it too ranger like, and the spin to win trap also seems kinda low on its dmg compared to its cd,
would like a trait aswell to make shorter cds on the traps… they seem too long compared to how much they actually do (the heal trap seems fine.. just the other ones got too long cd) :P
2 things from a competitive PvP perspective:
- Virtues active effects must be instant. The panic heal from F2 and the stability/stun break from F3 are absolute musts. I cannot do without the blind on F1. Using it mid-stomp and having it recharge on kill is one of the best utilities there is.
- Virtues need to be able to swap between their original effect and the DH effect. For example, I want the leap on F2, and may want the shield on F3 depending on what I’m facing, but I shouldn’t be forced into it. F1 could go either way; if I got the instant blind on activate so could still stomp with it, I’d be fine without the spear. If not, I will turn it off every time.
couple of things re: virtues
1. their active effects needs to be applied at the beginning of the cast, rather than the end
2. they need to be usable while channeling renewed focus.
THIS.
DH is weaker then Guardian also because of this.
No point in having a cast time at all if you get the benefit at the beginning of it.

I disagree. The cast time is for the usage of the new “skills” added to each of them. One throws a tethered spear. One is a leap attack (pretty solid damage too), and the other is a shield, which I’d actually be ok with having instant.
PvE review:
Longbow: Useless in PvE and no solution to that. Don’t need to change it for PvE since no matter what you guys do, no one will use Longbow in a dungeon.
Utilities: Nothing to do with them in PvE. No need to change them either as there won’t be any use for trap like skills in dungeons.
Traits:
Zealot’s Aggression: good dmg mod, simple as that.
Defender’s Dogma: don’t get what’s the point of this, maybe change it to extend the duration of spear of justice by 50% or 100% after blocking an attack.
Bulwark: can see use in few places, fine as it is.
Pure of Sight: This trait is just bad, forces you into a playstyle that’s not useful at all PvE wise and cripples whole trait line. My suggestion would be to change it to like “Crit chance is increased by 10%(?) to enemies under Spear of Justice effect”
Big Game Hunter: simply awesome, this trait makes this whole line good. Keep it and never touch it.
Virtues:
F1: Fine as it is.
F2: Leap can see uses but group wise it’s ureliable and can kill you during leap. Suggestion is to make it evade during cast or a similar way to avoid getting kittened over by animation.
F3: Fine as it is. Maybe reduce cooldown by 5s.
Overall I like this line a lot from a PvE perspective. Just Pure of Sight makes it not worthwhile.
Also, to clarify myself, longbow + traps being useless PvE wise isn’t a bad thing or issue. Leave them as they are or improve them for PvP.
Trait line on the other hand can be viable if tweaked a bit.
(edited by Amicable Pugs.4503)
Traps need CDR in trait.
it means THEY got me for " neg criticism in clever disguise".
Know that it has been fun and I love ya all.
Traps are pretty underwhelming. I played DH for a few matches and they’re just a waste of an action.
Heck, even in PvP I only ran into one DH and he was using Meditations.
Heavy Light knockbock needs to be massively increased in its kb distance.
At least 320 from the pitiful 120 now.
I feel like the Dragonhunter has a lot of potential. I like the flow of play, but it does need some tweaking/strengthening.
Bow 1. Needs faster projectile. Could stand to hit significantly harder considering how many of the other skills on the weapon are situational or on long cool downs. The ricochet/cripple is fun and keeps you thinking about position at all times.
Bow 2. I’m satisfied… IF its traited. Could stand to hit a little harder for the risk.
Bow 3. If the damage is gonna stay that non-existent, the cooldonw needs to be shorter. Make knocking down randed attacks one of the class’ memorably features that really rewards practice and not just a once in a while effect.
Bow 4. Largely satisfied.
Bow 5. Caging targets needs to be near instant (at the beginning of the animation, with a long after cast rather than the current timing)to give us some synergy with our traps. If the cooldown is going to stay that long it also need a little more damage.
The longbow and traps both SERIOUSLY need cooldown reducing traits (and NOT at the same tier).
Fragments of Faith rocks almost exactly as hard as I thought it would .
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”
- Jareth, King of Goblins.
the Bow is very bad.
The Traps are cool, but their problem stems from the same problem Traps in general had in GW2 before HoT. they rarely used due to the way they function. Enemy has to run over them. In a mobile action game, the battle field can change often, meaning you trap could be left behind to do nothing. they have 1 second cooldown and no ground target. if going full Traps, with Bow, this could lead to major failure.
Bow is bad because it has a root required damage skill, its slow, and the Symbol provides vigor instead of some other more useful element that harms enemies, or perhaps better support for allies.
the ground target skills are not very great. Skill 5 traps at the end. kind of making it useless in many situations.
The Traits are not very helpful.
the virtue skills need a revamp. Mainly Spear. Spear should have more important role than just burns.
bow all together need a revamp.
I say make Dragon Hunter into a more ranged DPS/Support hybrid some way.
