Build creation with or without food in mind?
If your not building with food in mind your silly.

With regards to PvE/WvW you should always include food into your build. Certain builds (such as high crit based guardians with omnomberry pies) use food to the point that it makes the build very good, Things like straight stat bonuses are one thing, but the special foods like might on dodge/endurance regen, health regen, condition duration/reduction can all make or break certain builds. Consider it another tool to your class, like another sigil or rune that adds that little extra something to help make your build all that much nicer.

Well I am probably a bit silly, but I plan out traits and then armor. Then food is more of an afterthought of “what food compliments my build”. 2 reasons for this:
1-I just forgot about food.
2-Sometiems it can be very costly and I want my build to work fine without food.
However if you know have the $ and know the food will make a huge difference (e.g. gives 10% crit chance which makes that trait now useful) it certainly should be considered.
I was indeed mindful of cost of food too and of the fact that I forget about them too many times.
Thanks all for your answers. I’ll put more emphasis on developing my cooking skills. 100 levels down. 300 more to go…
My preferred build will not function with out food… There are very cheap ways to level cooking, I did it for 3 to 4 gold. There are guides out there that help a lot.
With the gathering and crafting needed for Dailies I keep myself easily stocked up on the food that I use.
Food helps offset giving up specific stats in order to give others.
Let’s say you give up +100 Precision for +100 Vitality so you can eat precision food.

Here’s my opinion on it.
Take food / oils into account, but don’t “build around them”.
Reason being, if they are nerf’d or changed, and you’ve geared out with those stats specifically in mind, you will end up changing your gear.
This isn’t a problem if you have the coin. But if you don’t have the coin, you will be upset.
Personally, I always have the food and I can definatly tell when I don’t: I usually die! lol… and looking back at the fight tell myself “wtf?! Oh… DUH, no food”. /sigh

I doubt they will nerf food with stat bonuses. If they do food nerfs, it’ll be ones that offer effects, such as the on-crit, ie. omnomberry.
IMO, nothing wrong with keeping food in mind for gear planning. However, don’t fall for the on-kill stacking sigils and think about keeping those in mind for your build.
I used to build without food in mind. Then I realized how absurdly OP some foods were and started to build with them in mind from the outset. Frankly, food is so good I’m extremely annoyed at how drastically better you are with it compared to without it. But that’s a subject for another thread.

i think have them in mind, know what you can give up on certain stats to make up with using certain foods. or, know how a certain build can be made even better with food, but i don’t go out of my way to build gear and traits around food.
i see food more as a supplment. that, like many have said, cann really make or break a build. here’s the order i usually try to build:
concept —> traits —> gear / runes —> sigils / food
but definitely always run with food (and don’t forget oils / stones, etc!), no matter what content i’m doing (apart from harvesting stuff lol)

I am having fun with a crit based build using Omnom Pie. I’ve gear’d to accomodate this build and an AH build. I’m running this now to have fun with it in the event that the pies get nerfed. At first I was concerned but the more I play I think ANet has these available for the builds that have poor survivability. I am crossing my fingers that we don’t see any changes.
