Bunker build?
Simon says….
The main question is……. What is your goal what do you wanna do? PVE, PVP WvW…?
For PvE and WvW there are a couple of builds but a real bunker doesn’t exist in GW2.
But these are just examples. What you need to know is this;
- Don’t go for more armor as 3200 (because of diminishing returns on damage reduction)
- If you wanna do healingpower you need at least 800 if you wanna “tank” for your dodge rolls, staff empowers and healing signet
But the most important thing to know is there is no class that just can sit there and deny damage/facetank everything. Normal mobs ok, but no veterans or champions.
And by no means take this advise as if i am de CEO, general manager El presidente on knowhow on guardians im just a player and these are my experiences in playing 2 differents style guardians for almost a 1000 hours.
Good luck
Blunt of Balthazar – 80 Human Guardian
Khan of Feurt – 80 Charr Necromancer
Thanks for the info and the builds man!
I was hoping for information on playing a bunker in tPvP and sPvP, mainly focusing on solo queue tPvP.
I want to be that guy that just sits on a node the whole game. I want to be able to keep hold of the point, deny the enemy from taking it and eventually killing those attackers. I understand that as a bunker I shouldn’t expect to be able to kill people quickly, but i want a build that can still do good enough damage to kill people over time.
Having never playing Guardian I don’t even know if this is something that they can do. But i have seen, and been killed, by bunker guardians before; sometimes very quickly considering that bunkers tend to not do too much damage.
In my sPvP experience (fairly limited, I’m only rank 20) the Guardian is a much more teamfight-oriented class than other bunkers, because of its generally low damage and limited ranged options.
What it lacks in this area it seems to make up in immense area control and teamfighting presence, specifically where area denial (the hammer has 4 cc skills, shield has an AoE knockback, scepter 3 is an immobilize, GS 5 is an AoE pull/interrupt) and stomp/revive control are concerned. We have a variety of ways to proc Stability to ensure stomps go through, multiple traits/weapon skills/utilities that protect downed buddies while we revive them (and buff them after), and possibly the best condition removals in the game in most of our “meta” builds.
As of this patch it appears every one of our weapons is tourney-viable (except possibly the torch), and you’ll find a starting point for a standard bunker build below:

Note that the traits can be tweaked, amulet/jewel can be changed, and weapons can be swapped out and messed with at your leisure. We enjoy a lot of flexibility right now!
I’m going to disagree on Blazin’s facetanking comment. With the right build, you can literally facetank veterans and a handful of champions. I use full cleric armor and traited for healing symbols. I also use “Hold the Line” and “Save Yourselves” for the regen plus 6 runes of the soldier for condition cleansing. When the situation calls for it, I use mango pies. For damage, I spec for retaliation uptime and boon duration then I abuse combos that give retaliation. There may be a few other traits but all this amounts to a lot toughness and a lot healing.
If I’m careful with my shouts, I can literally stand toe-to-toe with the Champion cave troll in a war of attrition. I have taken on 8 to 9 risen at once and always lived to tell the tale. Today I fought a champion orc with a constantly respawning vet and 2 or 3 regular mobs without breaking a sweat. Veteran risen giants can make me a little nervous at times but I have yet to fall to one. As for the Searing Effigy, I purposely stand in front of his flamethrower attack just so he rapidly triggers retaliation. With another guardian or heal-specced ele, I have to remind myself to dodge to help heal them, not to avoid damage.
I can’t take on all champions. There’s a particular one in the Cursed Shore guarding a skillpoint and flat out embarrasses me if I come close. Still, I would say guardians can do some amazing things. And I haven’t even tried Altruistic Healing yet.
I played Bunker-Guard and Bunker-Ele for a long time now (about 2.5k tournaments, r55) in the competitive scene in PvP. If you want you can contact me ingame, also I can show you some tricks etc. against other classes.
