Can you...
Protector’s Strike is weird. It’ll work off of any hit regardless of your current state, and it will still burn through one strike of whatever it is you’ve got going on. In other words, if you pop SoW + Protector’s Strike, and get hit, your SoW will drop to 4/5 strikes and Protector’s Strike will proc. Similarly it’ll also burn up your Aegis even though you technically blocked the hit. It’s very annoying.
Painbow.6059: Ignore what anyone else who doesn’t agree with me has said because its wrong.
2/3 strikes* on SoW
It promotes slightly less spammy play this way.
I was actually more interested in as a burst option… pop SoW + protector’s and then JI into the target kinda deal. Would that work?
As in if I time my JI with the SoW final second and take a hit on prot strike will they all blow up in the target’s face for Xzillion dmg?

Yes, I’ve posted a Mace burst build on my guide:
Mace Burst (Mc-Tc / Sc-Fc) – http://tinyurl.com/p9jab6g
At first a lot of people think the mace can’t be used as a burst weapon, but it has been for a long time in symbol DPS builds. It actually works so well in Meditation burst builds that I don’t even think about running sword anymore. It does more damage, in a smaller amount of time and is harder to dodge. Along with extra blocks and completely AoE. Only negative is that you lose one teleport which could sometimes save you. If you use Zealot’s Fire before the rest of your burst you can land over 18k damage at the EXACT same time. Not too accurate if you do it this way but extremely powerful if it lands.
Scepter definitely not my cup of tea. I’d rather go with sword.
My question being what’s the benefit of having the torch with the mace instead of the scepter (in my case sword) and same question for focus?
I guess I should’ve mentioned I don’t do sPvP almost at all anymore (loads of frustration) and while I find the scepter to be awesome when the target is confined in that small area on the point. It feels lacking in the vast openness that is the life of a wvw roamer.
Edit: Nevermind, half an hour with the sparring NPCs proved that it doesn’t quite work as I would’ve wanted to. Unless the stars align and Jon Peters is whispering in my ear for courage.

I’ve gotten 5k+ crits by throwing Torch #4 before a burst (which I assume would be Prot Strike + Wrath). Scepter is just nice for some range and #3 for setting up other people’s burst, I think.
Honestly I like Torch, I just wish Torch #5 worked like Ele Dagger Water #2, where it would heal allies in it’s radius as well.
And for the pure awesome that the best two things a Guardian can think to do with a torch is set themselves on fire or have dragonbreath.

It does work, watch some of my videos, I get a lot of 1 shot kills on very good players and have extremely good survivability too. The burst is all AoE too and hard counters many back-point builds.
There are 2 main reasons the torch is with the mace.
- You have to end on Mace to burst, so a full burst is: Sc3+Fc5→(wait 2s)→swap weapons→double tap tc4→mc3+Judge’s+Smite. Won’t work with the offhands swapped.
- Less damage but more accurate bursts are more commonly used such as using SoW + Tc4 and judges with smite. That lands your Zealot’s Flame 100%, if they try and kite you don’t commit with JI and you have an 8s recharge on it. This is most commonly used in combo’s with only players.
ie. when Ele’s were still good I played duo roamer with my team, it opened up amazing combo’s like RTL>updraft>Chains of Light>Dragon’s Tooth>phoenix>Zealot’s Flame+Judge’s+Smite>the rest of the ele’s combo, etc.
And sword works against specific classes but does a lot worse against others.
