Hey guys.
So I’m planning into becaming a commander, since my server lost a lot of commanders and WvW due to the seasons and drama between certain guilds (from what I’ve heard). So since I want to still enjoy my WvW I thought that I might try and give a shoot at commanding. This will require me to come back and play my Guardian again, something I don’t do in a while since I fall in love with my Thief.

I’ve talked with some previous guild mates that changed servers, one of them behing a commander and they recommend this as build:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fUUQJARWlYgyC33xKEf4ES2jVCBTQsHYUG1RXFSIA-jkxAothoRfCUWsIasV2ioxqsxUvER1yAssFA-w

Currently I have this, because I used to be full cleric:

My question here is, if the recommended build is the best spec for a new commander (that is a bit rusty with the class) or is my current spec fine to any new commander and as I get to be better at commanding and with the class I should change for the recommended spec?

Let me just tell you what is required of most commanders.

Survivability.

Clerics < Soldiers/Sentinels

Try mixing.

Oh, and standard is usually 0/0/30/30/10 or something close to that.

I do believe it’s entirely possible to command with Healway-esque builds, but, yeah. It’s a bit more ideal to prioritize selfish survivability. (Yes, your selfishness in survivability actually helps the zerg.)

Yeah, something like that.

Good to see you’re taking advice.

Keep on testing, see if you can maintain planning while using Cleric’s gear. If you can, great for you! Otherwise, switch. Most would force you into Full Soldiers/Sentinels but I think the healing power is handy for keeping frontline troops alive.

Remember, you lead. You can stick a bit closer to the zerg but be sure to make good use of that survivability to lead, and stay alive.

If you’re really deadset on using cleric’s go ahead, but your job is to stay alive, ESPECIALLY if you’re commanding pugs. They will die and get lost if you go down, no matter how hard you try to keep commanding in ts or even worse map chat. I go full PVT, stacks of applied fortitude. Let your ele’s do the healing by blasting those water fields and your empower will do a decent amount of healing anyways because AH scales horribly with healing power anyways.

So how about Knight armor? Something like this:

Another thing. Is possible to command with a Meditation build?

Yes, it is.

I’ve seen a well-respected commander who uses Meds.

It’s kinda like those easy-mode bunker builds in PvP.

Could this be an option for Meditation Commander?

Or if I go Meditation I should just forget the Honor line?

Try this. Tanky with great condi removal but still has damage. Crit chance comes from food and sigil on top of the base 25%

Okay guys, after some more research and feedback, and the idea to try Meditations (I have allways used Shouts so I’m a bit tired of it) this I problably going to be my final build:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fUAQJARWlYgiD3GSNEfIFRugaBYP0oH/41jECxGC-jEyAorARfCU2rIaslxioxqXwUnER1ecM/BRUtMALbB-w

So what do you guys think about this? I am thinking in also try Hammer/Greatsword combo since without healing power (300 is prety much nothing) the staff would only be useful for might, but since I need survivability so much and I will be new to command, Hammer is problably better because I almost sure will have allways at least one Guardian with staff. So this is the build with Hammer:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fUAQJARWlYgiD3GSNEfIFRugaBYP0oH/41jECxGC-jkxAorARfCU2rIaslxioxqsx0wER1yAssFA-w

One final note, with this build I am only taking Exotics because I have only Ascended Cleric stuff and I am going to take now Berserker stuff for PvE (Fractals) and then Knights. Also Exotics give me the chance to try the build style without much loss, so if I for instance don’t like it, it allows me to go back for the Clerics.

Staff has Line of Warding, you know.

Hammer will better serve you imho with that trait setup.

Just a tip,

Remember gates?

You can stop an uncoordinated zerg from range with Line of Warding.

Yeah I though about that. so I was thinking in something that could maintain this trait distribution but for GS/Staff. This is what I’m thinking:

I just don’t know if I should use Soldier or Knight GS :S
Anyway the build is pretty much done, I also have everything Exotic and 1 Ring Ascended, now is just testing and see which weapons I work best
Once again thanks for all feedback and help given till the final build
Just more 28g and I get to be a commander
