Greetings,

first of all sry for my bad english it’s not my native tounge.

When i begin to play GW2 a few years ago i started with a necro. First it feels really great, like an unkillable killing mashine. But within the time i spend ingame it feels more and more lackluster. Now, after a few breaks of the game an returns i can’t play it anymore. It feels so boring and meh can’t even find a description for it.

So i tried out a few classes exspaclly Mesmer and Ingi. First they were fun but somehow i think they are not the thing wich i wanna play. This is a little bit strange for me in other games i picked up a class and play it till i quit. Never been struggled with my chlasschoice.

Im normaly a typical Paladinclass player (Played Pala/DK in WOW, Darkknigth/Pala in EQ 2, Pala in Singlegames like Baldurs Gate and Co). So maybe the Guard could be a thing for me. I have looked around for some builds but came to the same place where i was when i started GW2, it seems on Metabattle and Co there no sword an board builds. But i like this playstyle so much imo it fits perfectly to the class fantasy.

I’ve already build Blitz/Bolt for my Mesmer and i want to use it for the Guardian too if it’s possible. I’m a openworld and Low/Mid fractalplayer. No raids no high endgamecontent pvp/wvw rarely.

So my question is how is the Guard seen in an overallperpective to all Gamemodes. And is it possible to get an exaptable Sword/Shield/Focus Greatsword build for Openworld and Low/Mid fractals?

Thanks for your advices and opinions to this.

sword and board + longbow I think it is meta in pvp.

I play sword/shield and greatsword in pve and wvw.

You can play as you like but elitists will kick you from raids and similar if you dont follow their rules about dps and weapo combos.

Edit: plus guardian is heavy class and they have best armor styles in the game.

Stay away from metabattle and similar sites, because the suggested builds there are highly optimated for raid gameplay (10 people) and raid synergies.

Play your Guardian like you want. If you like S&B – play it. Aside from Raids (and in this field Raids played by super-optimizers only) nobody ever cares about your build – it most likely will be you, who starts to care about it. E.g. when you get defeated in a row in PvP or WvW. There are plenty of things you can do in GW2. As a returner I play a few months now, mainly Guardian and Mesmer but I’m not yet interested in playing the Raid, I did some dungeons, some fractals and mostly open world pve. I don’t like Chronomancer so I play Phantasm-dps on my Mesmer. On my Guardian I currently play a Scepter/Shield, Sword/Focus build, but I also often try different things, weapons and builds.

The short answere is yes, but it depends on your goals.

Base Guardian is first and formost a support build with some power DPS options that are appropriate for you ( based on what you wrote). It is not top damage because of the support focus, but most guards prefer it that way. Sheild, mace and hammer are defensive, staff is almost pure support. Sword, scepter, and torch is mostly offensive. It also has some condi (burn) through f1, utilities and traits.

The DH elite spec adds greater mobility and some decent DPS potential. Bow is a nice weapon for most situations and the traps pair well with melee weapons like sword or greatsword. This is usualy the PVE/ Fractal dps spec.

Our up and comming FB elite is a mix of additional Condi damage with the Axe as a condi main hand, and a suite of broad support skills.

I personaly run Sword/torch, Sword/sheild, bow, greatsword, and hammer sets in High end fractals and WvW

As long as you don’t intend to be top damage and you want to be durable or supportive, you can acheive whats stated in your post.

Thx for your replys. I’ve created a Charrguardian and unloked the DH specc. It’s really fun to play. Only on long figths when erverythings seems to be on CD an no trash is around to procc the trait for reset the F1 skill it’s pretty hard to stay alive for me at the moment. Champions soloing seems harder for me with the Guard/DH than with the Memser. Maybe some kind of l2p issue but i’m looking forward to improve my playstile.

This is the build im using atm in the new HoT map’s.
I can solo elites and champions pretty easely and it is build around a “sword and board” idea.
I use the a defensive weapon with a offensive one. Sword+shield and Mace+ torch.
Its a fun build focussing a lot on blocking, healing from symbols and aegis and retaliation uptime. I tried to mix my damage a bit. Dealing direct damage through my armor (zerker) and my weapons and trinkets with condi duration/damage.
Fun build imo! U wont die so easely with this build trust me
