This might be kitten But with Greatsword equiped I have around 2976 armor. With shield and scepter I have just above 3000. Is this decent? I am not full tank. I have around 20 points in power, 25 in toughness and vitality. And my armor is Armor of melandru so it gives like power toughness and vitality. With some crit and healing power. But i mostly build crit off of trinkets. I know it depends on my play style and all but I just want someone else s opinion on my armor. Sounds pretty dumb saying I am not full tank yet i have almost all trait in to tough and vit but meh. Im cool like that. What do you guys think?

i think around 3k armour is pretty decent. some may say a minimum or even a starting point, though. i assume you’re using berserker trinkets then?

thats fine, most are around 2200-2800 tbh, only some go 3k ish range. Im at 3.3k with GS though.

First off, max out Valor for either Altruistic Healing or Monk’s Focus. Now that you have one of the two best guardian traits, it will allow you to survive much longer. You can then start dropping pvt/healing gears for more damage oriented set up like knights/berserkers. Damage comes more from gears than from traits.

Considering wer named Guardians , i still feel like the warrior is better guardian than us ,my friend have 100 more toughness than me and 10k more hp than me , and more attack than me ( same gear ,same tough,vit points ) dont feel much of a guardian this way …. not to mention the lack of dmg when wer downed in pve , once u get downed its impossible to get up cuz ur doing pillow fight with the mobs … its the first game i see where a class such as guardian is the one with the lowest hp pool out there of all
I know ull say heals and all that crap ,but warr passive healing effect is double to ours ,not to mention hes healing ability is recharging twise as fast ,basicly making it the same amount hp healed cuz to our 40 sec heal hes 20 sec one , so more hp ,more def,more att ,better healing = better guardian than the guardian ,gj

its not just that hte healings, we have far more damage mitigation than a warrior does, and ours often tend to be more team oriented, yes the war has one skill that makes him block all attacks for like 2-3 seconds, but we have plenty of skills that give us certain edges:

wall of reflection negates most ranged attacks and turns it into damage against mobs (aoes not included) and it also removes conditions when friendly projectiles go through, sanctuary straight out absorbs projectiles, as well as can protect against all but the large foes and foes with a balanced innate attribute.

also our virtues when burned give a party wide bonus that cant be neglected, well maybe justice, but if you spec for just burning it makes it even nicer, but our regen does a nice heal boost in a pinch for group wide as well as it can remove conditions (if traited for it), and a party wide aegis with protection (if traited) which by far makes it far more support friendly than a warrior is.

yes they have more hp and deal more dmg than us, but how many of their skills do also give a small hp healing on use?

I think not. They have lot of protection and regeneration things that will do the job.

To the OP : you should have 916 (base toughness) + 1211 (defense from your armorpieces) = 2127 armor at level 80. Now it’s for you to decide if you want to have more armor (1 toughness grants 1 armor) or not.

Damage is DIVIDED by armor, which means having 50% more armor will make you reduce incoming damage by 33% more. This is why Signet of Judgment is a huge boost is survivability as it virtually grants you about 11% of your current armor which is a bit unfair to other signet attribute boosts.

even with the lowest HP pool, i’ve seen many Guardians survive way longer than most other classes if played well. i don’t even need to hit my heal spell to heal, all the while booning myself as well as my allies. i can make sure my teammates stay in the fight by just popping a virtue, shout and or with a dodge. we can revive downed teammates without being interupted, and bring them back up to full health if we choose to. to name a few of what the Guardian is capable of.

now numbers can definitely paint a picture, but they’re not everything.. rather, it’s more about what you actually achieve and how you perform while playing in dungeons, in WvW/PvP or in PvE.

Anything above 2,900 is way better than just “decent”. 2,400 armor is doable, but very risky if you are not careful.

3,300+ armor is not required at all. You are good to go as-is right now.

I would recommend at least a bit more of Vit, not just uber toughness, if possible. For, as I said, having super armor is nice but not required to survive. My HP at the moment is not great (16,045) but without Vit on my gear, I would have much lower than that. My armor with shield is 3,049, and it’s better than good enough for my purposes, since I also have decent HP for a Guardian.

To some posters above: this game’s Guardian is not a Paladin (IMHO, though it could be played like one). Low HP is OK due to this (though it’s pretty much THE lowest, which IS weird); he/she would be grossly overpowered otherwise (it is already super hard to kill as-is.) If you start thinking of the Guardian as a Battle Priest/Cleric, rather than a Warrior (Paladin) with more support/healing abilities, the lower HP starts to make much more sense (or just imagine a less physically hardy warrior, due to him/her focusing in other training areas other than weapons and armor.)

You are right to feel we havent enough armor. I found out no mather how much i put into toughness the rewards were always too little to feel any tankier at all. Iv tested builds with between 2700 as lowest and 3400 as highest armor. I can honestly say i did not feel any difference in my sturdiness. Unless protection was up i was going down as fast as anyone else. Once the conditions stack up on you and even after u remove them they get reapplied ur goin down from one root stunn or chain cripples. Sure the big nukes felt a little less but they were still fast and deadly and enough to down me.

So i said to my self ok toughness aint worth it. Lets try focus on vit instead. So i get full on valkirie set and vit food and now im at 22k hp and 2400 armor. I can tell you i live longer i get out o tricky situations allot easier and im 90% less on the floor than before. I keep protection up as much as i can in fights with 6 sec from virtue of courage and save your selfs 11sec and thats enough source of tankiness.

Wich tells me guardians hp got overnerfed from beta. I hear we had more hp back then.

3000 armor is on the high end, my friend.

Note, however, that no one is ever meant to fully take hits consistently from mobs, let alone bosses.

If playing in a team, got to pop skills more wisely, and dodge the big hits. If playing solo, perhaps have to spec into more attack. Defense gives diminishing marginal return, so while increasing armor reduces damage taken, the reduction in damage taken falls as the amount of armor increases.

Warriors (when they ‘tank’) are designed to soak up damage with high health & armor.
Guardians (when they ‘tank’) are designed to heal through, block, & protect from damage.
Warrior seems pretty boring imo. Tanking seems almost passive.
Guardian is more proactive and seems more fun. Plus, you aid your allies with defensive tactics.

It’s simply a mechanic to stop us being too powerful. Frankly we would be totally unstoppable with high base HP. Conditions and well timed burst attack are our achilles heal. The game would be boring if we didn’t have one.
