Q:

So I’m a new guardian, only level 10. But after seeing the Staff 1 skill, I already decided I wanted to make a guardian to farm with a magic find set to farm Cursed Shore.

This means my guardian will have lots of Power+Precision with Rune of the Pirate on my armor, and a staff with possibly Sigil of Luck.

Now, my problem is what traits do I use, solely for farming? If I’m farming Shelter’s gate for example, I’m not sure where to start when it comes to traits! Advice, please!

Would probably avoid the power line, instead spec into precision and toughness/critical dmg. I sometimes farm cursed shore with a staff and spec 0/15/30/20/5, i can crit 1.2k on staff auto attack (berserkers gear) in which tags quite a few enemies for me.

What you’d probably want to trait for;

- Larger symbols
- 20% CD on 2 handed weapons

You’d probably need some survivability for events such as the temple events in Orr, any of the two grandmaster traits in the toughess/critical dmg line will contribute to that.

More violence, less violets.

Staff doesn’t do enough damage to tag enemy groups in zergs. You want to use a GS and spam WW.

I’ve had plenty of success using a staff in Orr, tbh. I use it and the hammer to tag mobs a’plenty. Much more reliable AoEs than the GS.

With a gs you just run or leap in front of the mobs and hit 2. One WW and you have done enough damage to loot them. Staff does not do as much damage in such a short amount of time. After about 3 sec all the mobs are dead you need to do a large burst in a very short amount of time.

We don’t need to make mandatory gear treadmills, we make all of it optional

i have to quote this because its absolutely true.
For Orr event farming i use only the staff, and i dropp really a LOT.

Because, like Guild Wars before it, GW2 doesn’t fall into the traps of traditional MMORPGs.

You need to hit at least twice with the staff for mobs. Don’t use it against vets and champs though.

I too use Pirate runes with a mix of knight and valk armor. Using Explorer armor is asking to be killed. Good job, you have 18% more MF. I’m still killing twice as fast as you.

To be honest guardians are just so good at tagging with staff/gs/hammer. You don’t really need a “farming” build.

With a really low dps build (0.10.30.30.0 and pwr/tough/vit and sapphire jewels). I can tag mobs without too much of a problem.

Does it matter? I just want the drops. You can kill them for me if you want.

Ideally the best thing to do is just get a bunch of level 60 blue Explorer’s gear since MF doesn’t actually go up between a 60 blue and an 80 rare (it does go up 1% for an 80 exotic, not really cost-effective). GS spin and/or any symbol will be enough to tag mobs either way. If you do die somehow, bots will res you.

Gotta love Orr farming.
