There’s three of us planning making a trio.
My preferences:
Guardian with a Greatsword at least

Their professions and preferences:
Hunter with a longbow
Engineer support/healer

To be successful, what builds should we go far with our preferences noted here? Especially trait and skill build as we’re all still leveling.

Sorry I can’t give you specific traits/gear/builds but let me offer some advice. Based on your previous messages you seem to be relatively new.
Don’t be stuck at using x profession with y weapon. Guardians with GS are indeed great for damage but don’t neglect the other weapons. The same goes for your companions. I read somewhere that rangers biggest dps is with a sword. At the same time he can provide some good support. On the other hand engineers can dish out strong damage via conditions while being tanky and offering support.

My advice is for each of you to explore your own toons first so that you can find what works or what doesn’t. How about guardian using hammer #2 when engi uses his water field for that nice heal? These things will come in time! It’s hard to give you all the combinations but you can find them as you play. Good luck and have fun!

There are people in the world that want to be helpful, but they just can’t because they have become too jaded… I am one of those people…

Sounds like a good combo, the ranger can tank, the guardian can support him, and the engineer can contemplate the joys of rectal warts; surely they must be more fun than playing an engineer.

Edit: unless the patch at the end of june has a major buff for engineers; a warrior, ele, mesmer, or even a thief would be better in the longrun…

….as for leveling, there is no set advice. A guy with 20 points to spend will go one way with one weapon, but at 30 points he’ll go a different way with something else. Just keep your gear up to date; blues are cheap and good enough.

The only way to play the engineer is to exploit it.
Playing the engineer “as intended” is simply not viable.

Ezeriel you obviously have not played the engineer much. especialy since you dont know that it is one of the best pvp classes in the game.

Suspence i do not know much about guardians i actually came to the guardian forums today to do some research but for your engineer friend i would recommend that he google “HGH nade engineer” i run a slightly different version of this build “personal preference and all that” but i highly recommend it. i sit at a comfortable 2700 armor , 20k hp, 40% crit chance, 38% crit damage and with the permanent 25 stacks of might this build lets me run along with my superior sigil of corruption i sit around 3500 atk and 1750 to 2100 condition damage. to help him level i would reccomend he gets grenades and speedy kits trait from the tools trait line as soon as possible. this will allow him to kite enemy’s while doing sick damage via the grenades. putting more traits into explosives and traiting up your nades and crit procs would probably be a good idea as well. you should also mention to your friend that the engineer class has i high skill cap to run and doesnt bloom properly until late game so he should grit his teeth and stick at it and he will be rewarded later.

on a final not Ezeriel i would love if you could go and take your non-constructive troll garbage and say it to ostricheggs. If you dont know who he is i shall inlighten you. he is the number one engineer in the game and one of the top 3 players in the world. so ye….take your rectal warts else were.

good luck to you and your friends Suspence.

Constructive? You call telling a new player to roll an engineer constructive?

They are, without a doubt, the worst class in the game. There is a reason why no one plays them, or wants one in their group.

Every viable build the engineer has ever had, has been nerfed. The engineer has seen nothing but nerfs since the first day the game was released.

The OP want’s an engineer for support, and that’s just wrong. If he wants a healing/support class, a banner warrior, an ele that can find his water attunement button, a mesmer with regen giving phantasms, a thief with an offhand pistol, even a necro spamming Mark of Blood would be better than an engineer.

The only way to play the engineer is to exploit it.

you sound pretty clueless ezeriel. engineer is in a very good state atm. that signature of yours makes no sense either. I’m struggling to understand it.

@op

are you looking for advice regarding wvw, pve, dungeons or what exactly? :p

regarding wvw, I run with a guardian as a engie alot of the time in wvw, in a duo or a trio. the guardian usually provides the heals and boons while also dealing with most of the stomps while I do -mostly- condition damage. my opinion on a 3rd member is that ranger doesn’t really help much. a mesmer or a thief fits my group better because they can provide you with easy escape mechanisms.
engie as support/healing is perfectly viable tho.

Looks fine, one guard in a group goes a long way. Rangers do pretty good in most areas and I’m only 40 on my Engi but in PvP they do well, not sure in PvE yet. My suggestion is don’t necessarily put people in roles like ‘DPS’ or ‘Support’. I’ve been in the Tank/Healer groups and honestly they don’t work well at all. From a PvE standpoint each player should do their best to support their team while trying to maintain as much DPS as possible IMHO. Ran some stuff with 4x Warriors this weekend. Major difference when I switched from my Thief to my mostly GC Guard, they died a lot less Pure of Voice and our reflects are very helpful.

Things are obviously different in PvP but that makeup could be quite effective.

Three words: Blast Water Fields

Hammer’s Mightly Blow has a short 5 second cooldown (4 when traited). Engineer with Healing Turret can apply a 3 second Water Field every 15 seconds, and Ranger can apply a 15 second Water Field every 30 seconds. Use both to apply a 1320 minimum healing to the three of you. With every 5 points in Healing Power, the amount raises by 1.

Alternatively, Greatsword can be used to a lesser extent. Leap of Faith can be used every 15 seconds (12 with trait) for a self healing of 1350 plus an additional amount equal to half of your Healing Power. Greatsword also has access to two whirl finishers (10/8 seconds and 30/24 seconds) to activate Healing Bolts. This, however, does not affect the Guardian which more than likely will be the center of attention.

While the Engineer does not need to use Healing Turret (as Healing Spring also applies the Regeneration Boon), the Ranger should use Healing Spring as it also removes conditions every three seconds. When traited, Healing Spring can apply Vigor to all allies within its radius. Vigor will give you more evasions (obviously), and with Selfless Daring, more team healing. If you tackle a Cleric build, you can hold aggression and keep the party alive, but you’ll suffer from a lack of critical hits (for Vigorous Precision and Empowering Might). Generally, Selfless Daring has no benefits without additional Healing Power as 30 points in Honor only yields a 429 healing roll.

Alternatively, you can go with a heavy amount of Knight’s gear and use the general Altruistic Healing build. With a good critical hit chance (around 45-50%), you can apply Might nearly 100% of the time for an easy 350 health each second. Hitting multiple times each second definitely helps to activate Empowering Might, but it doesn’t mean to pick a faster weapon. Hammer with Writ of Persistence applies Protection 100% of the time while attacking nearly two times each second (one from Hammer and one from the Symbol). In addition, you will heal for each stack of Protection applied and more if your allies are within its area. Pair it with Omnomberry pies and a Sigil of Blood for an additional chance to receive 325 or 453 healing on a critical hit. For more healing, use one of the following sets:

Runes of the Pack for a 5% chance when hit to apply 3 Boons to you and all allies with (~1150 health, 10 second cooldown)
Runes of Altruism to apply 4 Boons when using a healing skill to you and all allies (~1400 health,15 second cooldown)

My only warning. Your Ranger friend wants to use Longbow, and that’s perfectly fine if that’s his/her choice. Longbow’s damage is better at range, so Empowering Might (among other effects) will not reach. This lowers your healing. Fortunately, a melee pet can be used to make up for the missing player within range as long as the Engineer and whatever 2 pubs (assuming you make a 5-man party) stay within 600 units of you. Keep attention. Use gear with Toughness if you want to tank the enemy. Toughness has some affect on aggression it would seem. The longer the enemy stays off of your allies, the longer you stay alive and, in turn, the longer you stay alive.

I think our main goal is to roam in WvW.
So far my PvP build that has worked is 30 Zeal 30 Valor and 10 in Radiance with Knight bonus for the most part, going for power and toughness mostly. I tend to use the Scepter/Torch combo as my alternate.
I use Judge’s intervention a lot.

30/10/30/0/0 can work in WvW as well. though, you gotta play smart and you defniitly can’t face tank! it’s more get in your face, unleash, then run or get out and heal back up or wait for CDs. check out these videos for reference. especially the “Zealous Defender” ones or the “12k hits” one under DPS builds : ))

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/guardian/New-6-15-Video-WvW-PvE-Builds/first

i want to say… depending on what you want to achieve in WvW, PvP and WvW are different beasts. roaming you can more easily “get away” with DPS builds on a Guardian. you can also think about the standard 10/30/30/0/0 and pick up Right Hand Strength to really boost your scepter and torch 4 damage.

i’m unfamilair with the ranger or engineer classes.. but utilize the CC’s they offer or support from the engineer to help you guys land your bursts on other groups, or ensure you have ways to survive after your bursts or if fights go on logner than expected.

The ranger I would suggest they go with fauxs RRR build and use a greatsword and shortbow or greatsword axe/torch. My main ranger uses this set up and she is nearly impossible to kill. We also noticed in our band of merry men that I was usually the one target first as a ranger. Using swoop to disengage for Trolls to repop is great.

I will ask our engineer if they have a support healing build tonight when I see them. They are mainly running masks condition build. Although sometimes have switched to a gc sd build.

I have been running an ah build on my guardian although have been looking for an alternate build….it is fun although I am not saving my group as I like and it can be brutal when I am solo roaming.
