Good first weapon/armor?
Knight’s armor would be a good choice. It gives you the damage you need while having some survivability. As for weapons, I suggest keeping berserker’s. If you need additional survivability, get runes of trooper or trait 6 points into honor (which a lot of builds do anyway) and use force of will.
Generally, you want to start out with some survivability to learn the dungeons, and as you become more experienced, you’ll want to get more damage to shorten fights.
Thanks and kinda what i figured/thought..Been an MMO player for YEARS..On break from FFXIV right now and started in VANILLA WoW..So yeah i just wanted to make sure what would work best…
And thanks again..Gonna start saving up my Karma and try and get a start via the merchants in Orr.

If you want to get the best, knight if a good as you learn the profession. I suggest that you start with knight armor with ruby orbs or superior rune of flames legion (because they are both really cheap and do the job), you can go strait to ascended trinket, no need to start with exotic for trinkets, all least for amulet and rings. I suggest to go directly berserker for those amulet (you don,t want to waste some precious laurel). For weapons, berserker or knight depending on who you feel. But you should go to a good build (trait, weapons) right aways so you start to learn it asap. If you start with a learning build, you’ll could have some difficulty relearn everything on another build.
GS/Hammer or GS/S&F are the most popular right now, if you need to keep a range weapons for a little bit H/Scepter&Focus is probably the best choice, but GS/Scepter&F work well too. Use trait from a meta build and learn to use blind/aegis/reflect to keep you alive, while switching knigh gear to zerker gear as you get better over time.
I recently put the build I use on Build Editor. I didn’t create it (I won’t take credit for a widely used build) but it’s basically the standard Knight/Zerk set. It’s a good build to use to start as you have much more survivability than full zerk.
Do check out this link though, it explains zerker guard, for both GS and S/F builds and also hammer build (which is also a good place to start as a newbie, as well as for Fractals).

That build is more tanky than my frontline WvW guardian build. I don’t consider that a good starting build at all. I used it for a while during the first year of the game (strife’s Anchor build). DPS is terrible, limited support (you give boons and remove condition, but meta guardian have better support). For ppl in my guild that want to get into a good build, but don’t want to go full Meta right aways, I always give them 2 options.
1) Use one of the best build right away and use a mix of zerker and tankier gear. You are still learning the gameplay of a meta build, practicing how to blind, aegis, reflect, the hammer symbol management, dps rotation, etc. But with a couple of tankier gear, you can survive more easily while you learn the profession. As you get better, change piece by piece until you get full zerker or at least reach a balance you are comfortable with.
2) Most new player don’t have much transmutation charge, have a lot to learn so they may want to stay hybrid for a longer time, but they still want to have a nice look on their character. In that case, gearing full zerker with a hybrid build is a better option. The downside is :
- good trait is better than good gear
- you are learning the profession, but not the build
- The learning curve when you want to get more toward full dps is drastic as you can change 1 piece at the time, you need to change the build.

I was sent to Strife’s guard build by my guildie when I first rolled guard, that’s all. My guild was mainly dungeon running.
Get a Soldier armor set from the karma vendors:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Temple_armor
(As a heavy armor profession you can get 4 pieces of armor with Melandru runes this way)
Buy/craft fine/masterwork Berserker trinkets. I wouldn’t bother getting exotic trinkets; you can get ascended trinkets quite easily with dailies (amulet and possibly accessories), Fractals of the Mists (rings) and guild missions (accessories):
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ascended#Trinkets
Start doing the dungeons Citadel of Flame and/or Crucible of Eternity to get tokens for your exotic Berserker armor.
Get an exotic Berserker Hammer and/or 1H Sword first, after that a Greatsword because it’s often used as a secondary weapon set. You can postpone the other weapons because you won’t use them as often and/or they are off-hand weapons and you don’t attack with them often.
You may want to stay with fine/masterwork/rare versions of the other weapons and go directly to ascended.
I would be very careful about buying karma armor from Orr. You won’t be able to salvage the gear, ever. Any runes you put on the gear will be stuck, so make sure to use cheap runes if you do.

Ok. Still, strife’s build was built around the concept of anchor. 1 single tanky guardian to control the aggro and support the team of 4 heavy dps guys. It was a seducing idea 16 months ago, but since then we figure out that :
- there is better way than AH to survive that also help your team and not only you (aka F1 blind)
- shouts are good for boons, but better support exist for the guardian (aka consecration)
- If you replace shout by other stuff like consecration, then pure of voice or troopers runes are useless (purging flames enough job by itself 90% of the time in PvE)
- Toughness can help controlling agro, but that’s unreliable and only make fight last longer. Better go zerker gear if you can.
- Damage modifier are the big deal when you choice trait and strife’s build didn’t have any.
With all that, we figure out that, Strife’s build was a nice attempt, but also a failed one for PvE. But a lot of the stuff from strife’s build was keep and form now the base of the standard general purpose guardian build in WvW.
Berserker trinkets and weapons, knight’s armor.
Start switching out knights for berserker armor as you get better.
