Q:

I’m looking for a selfish playstyle, the one in which i only care about myself – the one that is good in slaying major amount of enemies by himself(be it monsters either a small group of bad wvw players..)
Am I thinking about the right thing when I take greatsword guardian? Does guardian have this potential(with GS)?
To be more clear, i consider GS warrior and GS guardian and want to compare them to each other.

While thats true allright, It’s the same as saying communism is better. It is theoretically better, but practically people are selfish and want to be rich/strong instead of making others rich/strong.

In general what makes a guardian so overpowering is not its raw damage capacity. In that regards many classes do it much better. Its our staying power that makes us something to be feared. A guardian’s best tool is the fact we are a pain to kill if built right. As for greatsword. It like about any of our other weapons if played right it has the ability to mow down mobs. Although like anything else if the target has any toughness odds are they are going to lay you out if you go for a pew pew build.

We are overpowering?

I could have 10k armor and would still be killed by the enemy zerg because there is no way i could ever get away from them unless there is a friendly tower/keep/spawn nearby. (My guild nowaday raids with ~60% eles….it’s a bit depressing sometimes)

I’m not looking for exceptional damage, i’m looking for a combination of good damage and good survivability. I’m playing a warrior focused around GS(with little bit of survivability), and I feel similar to what I want but somehow lacking. I had plenty of damage, but I felt pretty clumsy(similar to immobile. GS warrior can move very fast, but it’s really, really clumsy.). Survivability also wasn’t top notch…
So in general i’m quite happy to trade some damage for survivability and maneuvrability(all guardian skills (at least on GS) seem to be very fast and fluid, and (3) spell is the most pleasant leap ability I’ve found)
Also, with GS I felt pretty LIMITED to amount of targets. you can attack – only 3 at once… with guardian i believe limit on targets is bigger( on 2,4,5 spells at least)

Not really.

(If) built right. Assuming you aren’t built right, you won’t be as tanky as people tend to believe Guardians are. Every class has survival builds, it’s just that Guardian ones are more popular due to less viability in other areas and because of “holy warrior” archetype being seen as innately tanky.

Guardian’s are only “tanky” because they can pour self healing on themselves through different means. You take as much damage as everyone else, but your boons and self-healing are the only thing keeping you alive and helps balance out having 10k less HP.

The downside is you’re more susceptible to burst and if you can’t heal yourself you’re screwed.

Thiefs survive basically because they’re slippery and they can pick and choose their fights while always having the option of escaping. Guardian’s don’t have the option to escape, but Thiefs can’t take a pounding like a Guardian.

I run GS with my Guardian all day everyday any play style. PvE/SPvP/WvW I always have a GS. great crowd control imo and deal out the damage. If you trait for GS you can up the dmg and cooldown time while also healing yourself with each hit. I just run shouts for my utilities and I’m good to go.

Right now I’m running with Melandru Aurora armor
GS/staff PvE, GS/1HS/Shield SPvP and was running GS scepter torch in WvW but that may change
signet of resolve, Hold the Line!, Stand Your Ground!, Retreat/save yourself depending on group or solo and Renewed Focus for elite

traits are set atm to: 30 Zeal (3,7,13), 20 Valor (4,6), 20 honor (2,9)
not in SPvP atm to check traits there but, pretty similar.
still working it out a bit but seems to work well in solo or group for PvE. Works well capping and bunker in SPvP and hell everyone just zergs in WvW anyways :p

It doesn’t sound selfish but…pop all your shouts, Tome of Courage, and heal away on a bunch of DPS classes that are grouped with you. Make them do all the dirty work, pretty selfish if you ask me.

Ugh what GW2 needs less of are Glass Cannon builds.

So tired of reviving GC’s in every boss encounter of every dungeon. Most cant even take on a Howler in AC (down in one blast).

The mentality of others who think its everyone else’s job to revive because they just want to DPS is just beyond annoying.

DPS monkey GS warrs in full zerker armor are the absolute worst.

There is nothing selfish about it. Someone has to charge into the front lines, disrupt and then retreat. Even in a dungeon nothing gets the mobs attention faster than the 5 skill followed by a WW.

As Brutality said in his guide using a weapon like Staff and trying to be a buffbot is basically leaving your team 1 man down on dps and you are not making that up with your boons. This made a lot of sense to me and changed the way I thought about combat quite a bit and the guardian in general.

GS has a strong AOE, an Initiate, a Symbol and a nice CC.

In WvW I see it as THE weapon of choice. Why? Ok there are a ton of guys with sticks all waving them at each other. There are only a few dudes with enough gumption to carry a blade these days. Once the foes health starts dropping, portal in where your guys are firing and lay down some smack. Nothing makes the little red arrows faster than WW. Nothing causes terror in the enemy lines like this. If you are just dying, you are not picking very good targets or running enough survival skills.

We don’t need to make mandatory gear treadmills, we make all of it optional

Both warrior and guardian can be selfish. Guardians just have less options to be effective when doing that. Warriors have a lot more options.
