Guardian - Known Issues 2015
Virtues
- Indomitable Courage ∞
Grandmaster III- Swapping this trait in/out gives Virtue of Courage a new cooldown timer, allowing for double activation.
- Couragous Return will not reset Virtue of Courage when this trait is enabled ( because of the alternative timer )
Hammer
- Symbol of Protection ∞
- Has a tendency to form itself in the ground below or floating above the guardian in uneven terrain or areas with several layers like the Orr ship.
- If the target dies just before the third auto-attack lands, the symbol can be placed twice resulting in double tick damage and twice the amount of protection stacked.
- Ring of Warding ∞
- Enemies may exit the ring without stability if timing their jumps or dodges correctly.
- Cancels the knockdown animation from enemies affected by banish.
Staff
- Orb of Light ∞
The orb may rarely get stuck in the terrain or more commonly in WvW fortress doors prompting you to detonate it.
- Symbol of Swiftness ∞
Can fail to apply swiftness if a player runs through the symbol between ticks ( This is more likely if the player is already under the effect of swiftness ).
Traiting Writ of Persistence for larger symbols can further alleviate this issue.
- Line of Warding ∞
- Enemies may pass through the line without stability if timing their jumps or dodges correctly.
- Cancels the knockdown animation from enemies affected by banish.
Sword
- Sword Wave ∞
- The third auto-attack chain often can miss structures or be obstructed by the terrain.
- Bizarrely, this is a piercing projectile attack which can also be reflected back at the caster.
- If the target dies before the third auto-attack lands, Sword Wave can repeat multiple times until it strikes another target or sometimes striking a target more than once.
- Flashing Blade ∞
- The teleport component may put you inside the terrain unable to move afterwards, may sometimes fail to teleport to a target that should be able to like on a ledge.
- Sometimes players will encounter a rubber-band effect after teleporting where they suddenly snap back to their original location.
Shield
- Shield of Absorption ∞
- Detonation can fail if attempted too quickly.
- The projectile absorption was broken in a patch and only lasts for 2 seconds instead of the stated 4.
Torch
- Zealot’s Flame ∞
Does not apply 6 seconds of burning as described by tooltip:- Very often applies just 3 seconds of burning
- Occasionally applies a second pulse of 6 seconds of burning after first 3 has expired ( totalling 9 )
- Zealot’s Fire ∞
Frequently fails to hit a moving target at range, becoming “obstructed” even on relatively flat terrain.
Scepter
- Orb of Wrath ∞
Enemies can make the bolts fly in crazy angles with small strafing movements.

Mace
- Protector’s Strike ∞
- The blocking component will consume itself and other sources at the same time, like Aegis or Shield of Wrath stacks.
- The skill will fail to block any attack from enemies that were not previously aggressive towards the player, meaning that if you preemptively cast the skill, move into aggro range and the mob hits you, it will not block any attack.
- Faithful Strike ∞
Only hits 1 enemy, despite indicating a target limit of 5, and the other 2 auto-attack chain skills cleaving up to 3 targets each. However it does heal up to 5 allies.
Utility Skills
- Hammer of Wisdom ∞
The push-back mechanic pushes enemies through Line of Warding and Ring of Warding.
- Judge’s Intervention ∞
Teleporting towards the end of a fall from any height will allow the guardian to avoid all damage on impact ( provided there are targettable hostiles nearby ) – probably a feature!
- Signet of Mercy ∞
- The tooltip is ambiguous, should indicate it rallies downed players, not revives, as it does not revive a defeated player.
- Can fail to rally a downed player while poisoned with very low hp, user reported it brought him to 70% instead so maybe the poison cut the healing and it did not heal enough to rally?
- Purging Flames ∞
Due to ground targetting, this skill is very hard to use effectively underwater.
- "Retreat!" ∞
Cannot be activated whilst jumping or falling, like other shouts can despite having a 0 cast time.
It can still be chained mid-channel with other skills.
- "Save Yourselves!" ∞
PVP only: Is not listed in the hero panel build editor skills list ( but is still selectable in the utility slot bar ) – probably due to the pvp/pve boon duration skill split.
- "Feel My Wrath!" ∞
Does not play the voice audio. ( available from the original Tome of Wrath #1 skill )
Elite Skills
- Renewed Focus ∞
- Sometimes it may start the animation and not offering any protection for the 3 seconds, if you move the spell will not go on cooldown and you can cast it again.
- Dodging while under the skill effects will often stop Virtues from being refreshed, and the Elite is forced into cooldown ( although invulnerability is unaffected ).
Other Issues
- The boon Quickness continues to affect leap distance ( even after the 7/7 patch ) for skills like Leap of Faith and Mighty Blow. Approximately, the former will have the leap distance reduced from 600 to 460 and the latter from 300 to 240 ( about 20-25% shorter ).
Notes
- Auto Attacks chains won’t start by themselves on enemies being hit by symbols, for example symbol of wrath without the player activating the auto attack chain by himself before the symbol is cast, is this intended or bug?, if the enemy is being auto attacked and then the aoe field is laid down the auto attacks will continue normally.

ok thanks, will add that – If I remember correctly it does activate if you manually cancel the transformation, although it’s been a long time since I used a lyssa set.
“Hold the Line!” lacks of character voice-over, while early beta version had it. Don´t know what happened to that :P
It does play voice overs occasionally and somewhat of a random context

- Renewed Justice
Several users report that it may fail to renew itself upon dealing the finishing blow on a foe. This appears to only apply to enemies that do not award XP.
- Symbol of Swiftness
Will only add 1 second per tick to an existing swiftness boon.
Can fail to apply swiftness if a player runs through the symbol between ticks ( This is more likely if the player is already under the effect of swiftness ).
Traiting Writ of Exultation for larger symbols can alleviate this issue.
Not bugs
- Leap of Faith when combined with Trait Blind Exposure
Blind effect causes 3 stacks of vulnerability multiplied by the number of AoE hits the skill achieves. Hitting 5 targets will produce 15 stacks of Vulnerability. All other blind skills produce the correct 3 stacks regardless of AoE effect.
This has nothing to do with blind exposure, Leap of faith hits aoe and applies an aoe blind for each target hit. For example, if you hit 5 targets, you are really applying 5 blinds to each of the 5 targets. That might be a bug but its relation with blind exposure is consistent.
Another thing to at least take note of is that Consecrated Ground works underwater. Well its not a “bug”, its probably unintended as its afaik the only ground targeted skills underwater and it pretty much makes them terrible

Although the Renewed Justice and Swiftness issues aren’t technically bugs ( more like quirks ) – they are worth including because they can catch out ( or just plain annoy ) people who aren’t aware of how they work.
I noticed a few trait bugs the other day.
- Supreme Justice: The increased burn duration when activating Virtue of Justice is not reflected in the tool tip.
- Protectors Impact: This doesn’t activate when you are launched or knocked back. It might be bugged.
- Zealot’s Speed: I tried a symbol-heavy build yesterday and this never activated.

Strenght in numbers trait says 150 toughnes in trait selection screen but it still says 70 in toolbar.

Thanks. Also the fire effect on the toolbar doesn’t take account of that trait, so it’s harder to tell if the next attack will cause burning.

Tested in the Mists by letting the Warrior NPC knock me off the cliff and it did create a symbol of protection when I landed. It’s harder to test in other scenerios, anyone else come across this?

hmm I could get this to activate in the Mists – what other traits did you have? – something else might be blocking it.
Note there is a 30 second cooldown, so if you healup and then drop back down below 25% it won’t proc again.

Yup, it’s actually just a little misleading.
When you put points into virtues you are actually increasing your “Virtue Recharge Rate” and not reducing the cooldown itself.
Virtue Recharge RateBase Skill Cooldown / ( 1 – Points In Virtues% )
in other words: 90 / 1.3 = 69.23
Dang that is quite a disappointment. Thanks for the clarification, though.

BUG;
- All passives seize functioning upon entering a Custom Arena. (Passives I had on my bar include; All virtues, Signet of Resolve and Purity(trait))
The workaround for this is to either get killed or activate all the skills to kick-start their passives.

Hey guys, I just traited Supreme Justice in Virtues, noticed that still says “Cause burning every 5th attack” on Virtue of Justice icon instead of 4th as the trait makes it.

Seems to me that the cooldown reduction for virtues gained through the virtues tree is bugged. Resolve has a base cooldown of 60, speccing 20 points into it (20% reduction) and it is at 50 seconds, surely this should be 48? It’s the same for justice and courage too.
Nope that’s right ( scroll up ten posts or so ) – you’re actually increasing Virtue Recharge Rate not reducing your cooldown ( I’ve added this one to the FAQ, thanks )

I don’t think this is a bug; it is balanced against other builds. This skill is highly inclined on support and self healing. It is neither offensive or defensive. Also, this skill is interruptible unless traited with Focused Mind and does not break stun. Buildwise, Altruistic Healing has similar effect but the usage and technique of attaining such healing is relatively on boons unlike this one which heals a large amount in one cast.
True, it is certainly a welcome quirk regardless of whether it’s a bug or an undocumented feature – either way I’ll keep it listed until it is confirmed or fixed.

Anet has now asked that all profession bugs should be submitted individually to the official bugs forum
So please post there in the future. Naturally if you suspect a bug but are unable to test it reliably you are welcome to post here and I’ll see if I can help reproduce it.
I might try and rebrand this as a “Known Guardian Issues” thread and link it off the FAQ if I can’t get it restickied, since I think it’s primarily useful to the guardians themselves so they are aware of the quirks of their chosen profession.
Regardless, my thanks to everyone that submitted reports and helped compile this list.

Since I just saw the old Rune of Strength bug in this list, I think it has been fixed some time in the last weeks. Did a small test (n~30) on the PvP training golems and the result was almost exactly what I expected with active 6th bonus. Maybe someone can try to reproduce it, but I think we can take that one off the list.
€: Did another test and the runes did not work. So nothing to see here, move along.

oh nice, will give that a test – I’ve wanted to try working those into a build for a long time
hmm just tried it in the Mists with 12 stacks of Might from a PvP Steady Staff – I showed exactly the same damage increase with or without the 6th rune equipped – so it still seems to be bugged, perhaps it’s different in PvE
This game seems so full of bugs … as I said, my numbers from Thursday seemed pretty convincing, but another short test (though I didn’t do the calculations) half an hour ago looked more suspicious. I’ll do a larger series later and post the results here.

if in PvP then use the steady weapons, otherwise the results can get muddied by RNG.
Also if you’re switching out the 6th rune, make sure whatever you replace it with has the same base stats or if you are a just measuring the difference with and without Might bear in mind that the +35 Power from 1 Stack of Might can get affected by damage multiplying traits and sigils
Thanks, but usually I know how to create proper controls. However, I did another, larger test series with n>100 and the results are consistent with the broken 6th bonus. So even though I’m pretty sure I made no mistake on Thursday, it’s obvious that the bonus at least does not work consistently, which makes the runes worthless.

hmm we’ve seen bugs before where certain effects won’t work on entering a zone and require you to un-equip and re-equip every item for the effect to work again… perhaps something like that occurs? Or like Rune of Vampirism where a damage piece of armor will prevent the leech from working until re-equipped
Tested un- and re-equipping, it does not work. So whatever the reason for my results from Thursday may have been, those stupid runes are definitely still broken. A shame, since they would have opened up an interesting route for runes.

Here is something I noticed recently although I’m not sure if it’s a bug or it’s supposed to be like this: when I fight a ranger in 1v1 and I use Judge’s Intervention this always teleports me to the ranger’s pet, not to the player even though I always have the player targeted before I use it.
It could be because the Ranger used a skill that made you lose target selection ( such as Hunter’s Strike/Hide In Plain Sight stealth ) and JI will automatically acquire the closest targetable enemy which would probably be their pet.
