So I have been playing on my Guardian for awhile now. I am going for a support style of play. I use mace/shield as a secondary for healing and self defense, and a hammer as my primary for damage and protection. I currently use the signet that gives 10% damage reduction and never activate it. Is this 10% worth it though? or can I get more usefulness out of using another ability. I tend to enjoy being durable, moderate damage, and I enjoy healing and boons.

You will get more use of out other things. While Iwouldn’t necessarily suggest zerker gear for a new player, it’s something yuou should aspire to. The game is about active defense. That includes thing like blinds, aegis, reflects. Healing is useful, I’ve grown to love the mace, but you have to be aware of light fields and their interruptions of fire fields or even water fields which are much more potent.

So for now that works. hammer is great, but work towards lowering your need for personla defense because quite frankly it isn’t needed in PVE. PVE is about avoidance, which can be done through blinds/dodges/aegis. Once you master that theres simply no need. When y ou do that you’ll be wanting something like Sword/mace + Focus and GS, possibly hammer still to help a lesser group. That said I’m still working on getting ther just saying it’s a possiblity, as you master events the defense aspect is inconsequential as you can avoid most every deadly attack and killing it faster is of the utmost importance.

Even if you don’t reach that level you should be able to sustain yourself without that 10% reduction. Wall of Reflection, Purging Flames, Stand your ground, Retreat, Hallowed grounds, those are probably the most common skills on my bar. This is coming from a PVE perspective though.

I won’t throw the meta builds in here. Although I would suggest reading https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/guardian/Guide-DPS-Guardian-for-PVE/first

Even if you don’t want to run zerker gear, it does offer alot of great tips.

As for the 10% damage reduction that is given to you with the sig, the active grant retaliation to nearby allies and weakness to nearby foes. Weakness reduces the damage to you and your whole party.

That signet goes against the guardian concept ( active defense class, reliant on boons/ active condition removal). It’s a huge “focus me” in www and pvp, and it’s a misunderstanding of the class. Use consecrations for maximum pve support, and read the sticky Talyn posted.

signet should give more 90 or 150 toughness on passive ;P
