Looking to understand Scepter and how it ‘should’ be played. I have no issues playing in melee range and as far as I can tell this class needs to always stay near its target and team.

So, keeping in mind that I will always be near my foe, how should the Scepter be played?

The reason I ask is even though Scepter range is 1200 I realize now that the designers NEVER ever intended that this weapon be used further than say 400 or 500 (600 if pushing it) which coincidentally -or more likley intentionally- is the optimal Staff range. What that says to me is Scepter+X / Staff played between 0-400….But how should I spec? Healing or DPS…or better yet can I spec DPS?

Scepter is for big events/sieges/bosses in dungeons that you can’t reach. I think keeping scepter in swap slot all the time is senseless. I always have scepter in my inventory and use it mostly for (maybe it’ll sound like a joke, but it’s true) destroying objects :P. Despite low damage 2nd skill do constant dmg to objects which i often miss with GS/mace. I also use scepter when fighting dragon or last bosses in TA and CoF (2nd path). 3rd skill is also usefull for champions who are changing targets every few seconds and running from one players to another all the time.

Maybe that’s not the way scepter should be used. If you have any better ideas of scepter usage ill be glad to hear it.

I’m big on dungeons so most of my opinions on the scepter is based on my experience in explorable paths.

I flat out hate this weapon. There are some fights that require the scepter but on a whole I would rather bring skills that grant stability if impairment effects are an issue.

The DPS is lackluser ( the cotton balls are stupid) as is the rest of the load out of this weapon.

The real issue here is when we come to an encounter that the scepter could be of use I ask myself if I can scrape by, by using Hallowed Ground or timing the clutch dodges. Why am I even asking that question? Aside from kiting there is nothing the scepter can do that any other load out combination can do more effectively and with an added pinch of actually being fun.

Use it only when you absolutely must.

i agree with most points of Rismo and Phasmo brought up. scepter is great at destroying objects (bug with melee hits not connecting all the time). and i use scepter quite a bit, but primarily in dungeons only. previously used to use WvW as well but now i’ve switched more to the staff. that being said, i’ll always have each weapon available to the Guardian in my inv.

i do use the scepter mainly when i can’t reach the mobs, in dungeons, or dragon fights, etc or to be able to do so in a relatively safer fashion. immobilize i use to lock down fleeing enemies (WvW) and #2 is actually very good against siege weapon building sites, and or bosses that are more stationary. or u can always immobilize and then drop a #2.

auto attack i just spam white kiting, but i don’t even really count on these hitting the mobs half the time. but when they do connect, the dmg isn’t nearly as bad as one thinks.

definitely not an effective weapon at close range. if you’re in melee range, i definitely switch to hammer and bash away. i guess i sort of use scepter to get some early hits in while mobs approach me or i am approaching mobs, then drop #3 and then #2 on them and then leap in with melee.

so the scepter has it’s uses, but does highly depend on the situation.
though when i do need it, i love it. haha for obvious reasons.
