Guardian Weapons
I used to play hammer, but I’ve since switched over to gs. Hammer is better for control than gs, but I think overall that gs bests it due to mobility and speed – hammer play just feels slow after switching from gs.
GS
Mobility and looks good. :p

This.
GS for mobs, hammer for bosses. Having permanent protection up makes subject alpha trivial.

Greatsword. Looks better and has a way more interesting gameplay than the hammer.

hammer.
Gs is too much a one shot pony, its just a dps weapon. Hammer offers so much more in terms of utility, masses of control, a very short cd blast finisher, perma protection. And it hits like a truck.
GS is great on lots of weak enemies, but otherwise its hammertime!
Elementalist in the party? Hammer. If not, greatsword.
Painbow.6059: Ignore what anyone else who doesn’t agree with me has said because its wrong.
Again, situation dictates. Foofad mentioned hammers with an ele in the party which is very true but it goes well with dark fields, and fields by mesmers, rangers springs and more. Even though hammer auto attack is slow it kills a golem faster in the heart of the mists then a great sword does. 80% of the time I run hammer and great sword unless there is a boss fight I need range. Nothing like binding chains, dragging a mob in, switching to hammer, ring of warding, and smashing your enemy mob to a pulp
I had tended to be a hammer proponent for a long time. ~75% uptime on protection in PvE? That’s pretty sweet! But, lately, I’ve really noticed that I am simply able to squash things with the GS without giving up much tankiness. The Guard’s GS has a kit built for damage, while the hammer is focused on damage mitigation and crowd control. The issue is that crowd control (hammer 3, 4, 5) is simply not as effective as direct damage. IMO, the GS just wins out.
The GS kit also seems to mesh together better. 5 → 4 → 2, followed by 3 when the enemy begins to run. Autoattack during the ensuing pursuit, repeat.
The hammer’s basic combo might appear to be 3 → 2 → 5 → 4, but warding skills are too easily escaped. At best, they make someone use up an evade. At worst, they accomplish absolutely nothing as the enemy touches the edge and is inexplicably flung out on THE OTHER SIDE.
I’m saying that warding skills kind of suck, okay?
Greatsword. No special reason. Just don’t care much for hammers.
I’ve always loved having a Two-handed sword on the back of my character, so for that reason – Greatsword. And in the MMO’s I’ve played usually they are the items that look the best (at least in my opinion). Plus – it’s more mobile :P
Hammer. Hammer has insane synergy with Judge’s Intervention. Wind up a ring of warding + JI = guarenteed lockdown (unless they blink out of it.) Also mighty blow hits like a freaking truck, is on a super short cooldown, and it’s a blast finisher which wonders wonders with combo fields. The raw damage of hammer is way stronger than greatsword.
1h sword, because I like to be different!

Either one honestly, depends on what style of play I am going for at the time. Hammer is nice with the mighty blow bursts and CC, GS is good for the mobility and vulnerability bombing with blind exposure (has this been confirmed to be a bug or intentional yet?

Why not Both, i use the Hammer, Gs combo in SPvP and stoping players with the hammer then mass burst from GS = dead people.
