Guardian WvW
Bump!
No1? Or i’m asking some stupid thing? :B
not stupid at all. i’ve wondered the same thing. i love playing Guardian and in my first experience with WvW, i felt i wasn’t doing much. especially in the big battles!!
i’ve asked around other forums and here a few tips:
- wall of reflection —> using for keeping enemies away and you and your friends can hit from behind it
- scepter —> is not as bad as one may think. it can deal decent damage and fires relatively fast. and in a big battle, so much is going on that most people won’t notice to dodge; the 2 attack is pretty decent and you get a binding skill as well —> used well with traits, can cause some people a lot of trouble
- the hammer is a decent alternative —> it deals decent damage when needed and also provides some CC as well as; number 5 symbol is not bad, good use to trap low health players or keep others out; larger symbol trait might help
- if you’re caught in a defensive position say on a wall and you feel you can’t contribute, Tome of Wrath is pretty decent for dishing out dmg and booning your comrades
i’ve yet to go back to WvW but i’m excited. : ))) most people i’ve heard back from seem to go all DPS and the support they offer are mainly f1, 2 and 3 if needed as opposed to going all support.
don’t worry too much about your dmg as long as you’re surviving. and OOH, how could i forget, use siege weapons!!! ballista for example. and you have a bunch of protective spells as well.
not able to give you a detailed build, but hopefully someone can help! i lov emy Guardian as well and won’t switch. will just slowly learn how to better serve my World. good luck and keep having fun!

that is a HUGE problem. supporting allies give you absolutely nothing in PvP, there is no gain in it whatsoever.

akamon.2769@ Thx for the tips.
Last night i tried the triple meditation guardian ( http://gw2skills.net/editor/en/?fUAQRAsd7elYgSDHHyNEm4Eh1DCeQ/VVIeXPgYEbIA;TwAA2CnoqxUjoGbNuak1suYQxmgJBA and well it wasn’t as bad as i thought, but had to switch some utility skill when things gone to zerg vs zerg (e.g. grabed Wall of reflection, retreat, and sanctuary)

Yeah, as far i see if i don’t hit at least once the enemy i don’t get bag of loots.
Anyway i’m lvling my little engineer just for backup, if i’m fully give up the hope in WvW with my guardian. :B
I’m finding I’m doing particularly well with my guardian spec and playstyle.
I’m usually rocking out with a scepter and focus in one set, and a two handed mace in the second set.
My trait build tends towards toughness and vitality, and then power as a final stat.
I play with a group of at least 3 people, but usually no more than 10, and we either work as a unit or with the main ‘zerg’
My role in the group is to call the shots and try and whittle down enemy numbers. First thing for us is baiting – enemy groups are normally larger than ours, so it’s a case of feigning a retreat to encourage a pursuit, then turning on the front-runners and quickly taking them down.
I’ll usually lead with my mace, hitting the snare ability before placing the down the circle ability which locks them in a small area. I’ll then position myself between them and retreat and use the knock-back ability to send them further into our forces, and further away from them. All the time hitting 2 when off-cooldown. My other skills include the healing signet, the toughness signet, consercration (the burning damage one) meditation charge thing (teleports to foe and burns the enemy) and my elite skill is either my charr warband companions, or my charzooka.
I’ve taken the trait which causes extra damage to burning opponents so I’ll try and chain my abilities to keep them burning at all times (whilst co-ordinating with my team)
In larger scale fights some-times the melee gets a little impossible and puts you in a vulnerable positions. For this I take out my scepter and start hitting the ranged auto-attack. During these large battles I look for people that are slightly away from the main-group and focus them. I’ll head towards them dropping my snare and aoe on them, before hitting the 4 and 5 focus skills to grant me more defense. After this I’ve usually reached them and swap to my mace, sending them towards friendly lines with the knockback skill.
At this point you’ll be probably drawing a lot of enemy fire, so popping heal as well as aegis and you bound signet heal keep me up, before dodging back towards friendly lines and chaining my snares and applying all dots and weakness to try and take down the opponent.
Rinse and repeat on cooldown to whittle down the numbers. The main thing for guardian play in WvW is to be very concious of what is going on around you, don’t be afraid to let a couple of kills get away, and don’t ever tunnel-vision.
If there’s the demand I don’t mind frapsing a few sessions in WvW and tying a commentary on it?

@Zelden.6143: Sure, i would like to see more WvW from Guardian PoV.
Awesomesauce, I’ll work on a video tonight and upload it, a post a link here tomorrow.
I’m afraid the upload quality won’t be particularly high as my internet connection is pretty poor until I’m back at uni in a weeks time. But it will give you some idea.

I don’t feel like I can kill anyone with my scepter or staff, but I have the most fun setting up barriers on bridges. Wait for their entire team to start pushing against you, pop a barrier on the bridge, and watch about 50 people run into it and fall down. SO.MUCH.FUN.

There is a perfect spot for this where you can cast it off the top of the wall while having plenty of time to watch and run away when its over. It really never gets old.
I mostly WvWvW, and I play Guardian primarily.
I have found the most success with a Staff/Hammer build that utilizes Shouts for group buffs.
The staff doesn’t do a lot of damage, that’s true… but it has an aoe might buff that ends in a nice heal, and it has 2 Light Fields available. The big shiny orb (#2) does decent damage if you don’t bust it, and if you do bust it the aoe healing isn’t bad either. I find the autoattack on the staff is really nice for tagging all of the enemies for collecting loot.
When the enemy gets too close to my group, I whip out my hammer and start laying down the control and defensive buffs. I tend to feel like the guy on the battlefield that everyone rallies around during combat.
But you don’t do massive damage, for sure.

Horrible horrible problem if you ask me.
Guardian has some great support skills, like wall if reflection. However, every support skill you take is one less DMG skill, and DMG is the only thing that counts towards contribution. Its a broken system if you ask me. It encourages us all to focus on high DMG glass cannon type builds.

High damage, or just some damage?
The staff has an AoE damage skill as default auto-attack. I think this works, but I’ll check closely next time I play.

Yeah, the contribution thing is a problem… I also get just a few bags, but still. I prefer the support role. I go with a shoutdian, with increased boon duration, and reduced shout cooldown. I can buff so many people, and for long periods of time.
My DPS is subpar though, I roll with the staff and mace/shield. The staff has the best support abilities. Do not underestimate the 2 attack though, it can hit really hard. Also the 3 attack is very long range and does damage as well in an area (little damage, but something).

I’m not sure what the number is but contribution is determined by having done a percentage of the total DMG, what that percentage is I’m not sure. Either way though, it encourages focusing on high DMG, aoe type skills and classes that excell at that.
You can still get some credit in a support build, but compared to say an aoe focused elementalist? Not even close.

True, but the game hardly has been out for 2 weeks there’s room for stuff like this and more improvement.
But my Guardian I use frequently in PvE and PvP. My build is 10/30/30/0/0
My main items are sword/torch, greatsword and sometimes scepter/torch when I need the range.
My lvl 80 exotic armor builds around power, precision and vitality making up for the 0 points in vitality and also the precision turns into bonus armor for me. I have about 16k health (guardians have a base 10k without vit stat) so I am a crit/burn build and still very durable in combat. So far I have had no problems in WvW or PvP. Maybe the lack of the range but then again if I wanted range I wouldn’t have played guardian
Good luck man hope you find the right build. Keep trying there’s tons of builds to go

Hm, i still can’t choose between my Guardian and my Engi. Engi has lots of tools – like the grenadier/bomb tool what can do much more dmg then my guardian ever saw, ranged skills can very effective in WvW.
But, in the other hand, it’s not a guardian, i’m missing my sword/GS teleport/pulling skills, the bubles etc what was really fun in the guardian.
As perviously said the contribution as support is big problem, and actually it’s not even worth. I know it has a very small chance to confirm by a GM/Anet team member/anyone who are in charge the know about this problem and – will – working on it.
