[Guide] Playing Guardian in Dungeons
Introduction
About This Guide
This guide assumes that you, as a Guardian, are capable of making your own decisions regarding what traits to bring most of the time. If you’re unfamiliar with what meta trait setups for Guardian are, I suggest you check out Obal’s guide (http://dtguilds.com/forum/m/6563292/viewthread/12501056-dnt-guardian-build-12715).
This guide also assumes that you are capable of making your own decisions about what roles you most need to fill as a Guardian within a given group, as well as that you’re capable of figuring out what utilities you can safely burn at various fights.
Furthermore, one thing the guide doesn’t always mention is that if you can be buffing allies with Swiftness (Staff #3), you should do that, and if you can help blast (Hammer #2) smoke fields and fire fields, you should quickly swap to hammer to do that. Consider this part of your role throughout every dungeon.
I am not telling you that you have to play in any specific way. Play how you want. If you don’t want maximum efficiency, but still want more efficiency, learn what you want from this guide and ignore the rest for all I care.
How To Use The Guide
There are a bunch of ways you could use this guide. I think one of the more effective ways would be to have it up on a second monitor, or print it, and quickly refer to it the first few times you’re running through a dungeon. This will help you create “good habits” regarding your actions and utilities, instead of possibly forgetting something and getting in the habit of doing something that’s suboptimal.
Another suggestion is that you carefully read the guide, and try and figure out what certain things are suggested. You might want to consult www.gw2dungeons.net if you’re having trouble figuring it out. If you still can’t figure it out, feel free to ask me.

The Ruined City of Arah Path 1
Way to Ancient Ooze
Role: Swiftness, Projectile Defenses
Weapons: GS + Sw/F
Recommended Skills & Traits: Shelter, Retreat, Wall of Reflection, Save Yourselves (use only at start), Feel My Wrath or Renewed Focus
Other: When killing the Orrian Turrets, drop your Wall of Reflection only when all the turrets that will pose a threat during the skip to the Crystalline Entities are attacking you. Make sure your team stays back so no turrets aggro onto them, thus avoiding destruction.
Ancient Ooze
Note: Pull the Ooze by moving close to it so it aggros onto you, but do not attack the ooze.
Role: DPS, Quickness, CC/Interrupt
Weapons: GS + M/(F→T)
Recommended Skills & Traits: Shelter, Retreat, Wall of Reflection, Bane Signet, Feel My Wrath or Renewed Focus
Other: If you plan to interrupt the split, use Binding Blades when the health on the Ooze is just past the “z”. Pull when the ooze goes into the puddle form.
Way to Crystalline Entities
Role: Swiftness, Aegis (try to prevent allies from becoming crippled), Condition Removal
Weapons: GS + Sw/F
Recommended Skills & Traits: Shelter, Retreat, Purging Flames, Judge’s Intervention or Merciful Intervention, Absolute Resolution (Virtues M-C), Renewed Focus or Feel My Wrath
Other: It may be difficult to get out of combat before starting the skip. Don’t worry about this too much.
Crystalline Entities
Organized:
Use Shelter as your heal. Gather up the entities, and bring them to your team once they’re ready (a bunch of stacks + might). Your team will very quickly burst them down. Works best when Ice Bows are involved.
Unorganized:
Use Signet of Resolve as your heal, and trait Signet Mastery (Radiance II). Gather stacks, kite entities, and make sure you lose the buff before it kills you so you can eventually heal up and continue to kill them.
Way to Shoggroth (Tar Boss)
Role: Swiftness.
Other: Get set up for the Tar Boss.
Shoggroth (Tar Boss)
Note: The amount of burning, CC, and immobilize you will need to be responsible for will vary greatly with team composition. Know what other classes can contribute (and will likely contribute based on player experience).

Option #2: Maximum Carry
Role: Burning, Projectile Defense, CC and Immobilize, Stability, Condition Clear, DPS
Weapons: Hammer + Mace/Torch
Recommended Skills & Traits: Signet of Resolve, Purging Flames, Hallowed Ground, Wall of Reflection, Absolute Resolution (Virtues M-C), Renewed Focus
Way to Giganticus Lupicus
Role: Swiftness, Projectile Defense, DPS, Quickness, Blinds, Aegis
Weapons: GS + M/(F→T) or GS + Sw/(F→T) if party lacks blinds and DPS
Recommended Skills & Traits: Shelter, Retreat, Wall of Reflection, Bane Signet, Renewed Focus or Feel My Wrath
Other: Use Wall of Reflection (on the Elite Risen Hunter) and spam Virtue of Justice (F1) versus the risen trash mobs. Use Wall of Reflection to protect your team from Orrian Turrets and kill them. Use Blinds, Aegis, and Binding Blades to protect your team from the Undead Abominations / group them up so they are easier to cleave, as needed.

Jotun Stargazer

The Ruined City of Arah Path 2 (Continued)
Way to Alphard, Serpent of the Waves
Note: A Warrior or a Thief normally runs to get the waypoint. This section is only useful if you are going to run and get the waypoint. If you are going to do this run, use GS + Sw/F, dodge Deadeye Killshots, and double dodge / Shelter against the sharks. Maximize swiftness uptime.

Recommended Skills & Traits: Bane Signet, Retreat, Wall of Reflection (to help keep up Unscathed Contender) or Purging Flames (if a fire field is needed), Feel My Wrath

Reserved, just in case.
Reserved, just in case.
Reserved, just in case.
- Absolute resolution have almost no reason to be there. Very few fight need more than purging flames and taking absolute resolution will decrease your dps. I could see it like in SE path 3 when you fight General Volkov because he give a lot of bleed, but in general you only take it when can’t really stay alive in full dps.
- For the Spike Corridor Gravelings you recommend wall of reflection. I guess you may not have the time to remove it from after the Spider Queen, but you do not need it for the fight.
- Howling King. Are you sure that you can reflect the scream of the Howling king?? Never heard of that one. You can reflect the cone attack form Colossus Rumblus, but the Howling King??.
- Graveling Trap Event. You strategy is weird. I usually don’t change a thing, just make sure I have stability and purging flames, stack in the right corner on top of 1 trap. 1 guy is using the trap, the other 4 are dpsing. No need really for cc and when the breeder spawn I aggro him with my focus 4.
- Ghost Eater. No need for Purging flames. At worst he can give your team 2 stack of bleed, but reflect+aegis should protect you. Shield of Avenger is only needed if your team are gonna use 2 traps. If your team have enough dps to kill him in one trap (what should happen) Shield of Avenger is useless.
- Colossus Rumblus. You should add that the reflect is only needed for one attack. Rumblus usually start the fight with the attack Shockwave (8 ground attack that can knockdown you). He have a 10sec cooldown on it and if the second time he use it he is at 25% of less of his HP, then he gonna also make a projectile attack that can be reflected and pretty much instant kill him. In a good team you will probably kill him before he can do a second shockwave, but in pugs the fight may be long enough to do it. But it can be hard with a wall. Easier with a feedback.
- Bloody Victoria. You should add that you can’t block or evade the stun. So either put stab 1 sec after she went into stealth so people don’t get stunned, or wait until she stun someone and then put aegis.
- Frost. The projectile defense is for the turrets not the boss itself. So need need of that if you gonna agro him in a corner or something like that.
- Taylor. Don’t really waste condition removal on the immobilize. If someone get immo, the turret will continue to shoot at him until you destroy it.
- Marius. I don’t know why Hallowed ground. Retreat or signet of bane seem better choice there.
- Wahlen. You should add that condition clear is for the trash. The boss itself only give vulnerability.
-Vallog. There is only one attack that can be reflected and it’s the fireball (you will see a fiery effect on him). Shield of avenger will only be useful in a long fight. For the spike attack, look at his feet. When he gallop on place, the attack will follow quickly. It’s hard to see because of all the AoE.
Purging Flame is often recommended for an extra fire field for situations when the Ele’s won’t be able to prestack a lot of Might/Fury. Also Ghost Eater can put a ton of Vuln on, it’s not uncommon to end that fight with 20+ vuln on the party. So while I wouldn’t think you need it for condi cleanse, it isn’t totally wasteful to bring some. And yes, just being a fire field is useful.

Absolute resolution have almost no reason to be there.
I can’t write a guide for everything from elite speedclears to extraordinarily slow runs, so yeah, in some runs Absolute Resolution is definitely overkill, but in what appears to be an “average” pug run in my estimation, it doesn’t appear to be overkill for many fights. As always, you need to use your own judgement as a Guardian as to how much support you need to provide.
Spike Corridor Gravelings…wall of reflection. I guess you may not have the time to remove it…but you do not need it for the fight.
Correct. You almost certainly won’t be able to swap it off, even in very slow groups. Plus, the gravelings are very easy (changing your utilities for them is probably a bit overkill as I have yet to see a group struggle with them), and you’re just going want Wall again for Kholer.
You can reflect the cone attack form Colossus Rumblus, but the Howling King??.
You can’t. Obvious copy/paste and forgetting to remove stuff error. I’ll correct it later today. Thanks for the catch!
Graveling Trap Event. You strategy is weird.
In terms of strategies for the event, the best way to do it is to let Detha (almost) solo. The second best way to do it is the middle trap method that I suggest, because it’s easier and a bit faster than the top right stack method.
Ghost Eater. No need for Purging flames. If your team have enough dps to kill him in one trap (what should happen) Shield of Avenger is useless.
The ectoplasmic ooze have an aura that applies vulnerability very quickly. Purging flames is nice to have for that, and because it’s a fire field.
The trap makes him vulnerable for 30 seconds. Wall lasts 12 seconds with MoC. Even if you charge the trap before you aggro, have someone else aggro, and double wall while using MoC, that’s 24 seconds. So in this (slow) case, Shield is still good, especially if some people aren’t standing such that they’re in/behind Wall. If you pull the boss to the trap before charging it (so you can charge it MUCH faster and don’t have to lure him there after it’s charged), Shield is even more useful.
Colossus Rumblus. You should add…
I’ll consider it. Part of my hope here by just listing things like “Projectile Defense” is that, as suggested in the introduction section, people will go to gw2dungeons and look at the mechanics and try to figure out the reasoning behind every suggestion.
Frost. The projectile defense is for the turrets not the boss itself. So need need of that if you gonna agro him in a corner or something like that.
There isn’t really any reason to pull him if you have projectile defense, though, and a single Guardian definitely provides enough projectile defense.
Taylor. If someone get immo, the turret will continue to shoot at him until you destroy it.
The hope is that people will continue to proceed to the boss (only having been immobilized because they missed a dodge), where you will be providing projectile defense so they don’t get immobilized again. Repeat the same thing on the way out of the room.
Marius. I don’t know why Hallowed ground.
Hallowed Ground is for the trash at the top of the stairs, which have a knockback attack.
Lots of groups stealth across to the top of the stairs that has trash + turrets, and fight there. You can also just YOLO across, which I have done with pugs many times.
Awesome Zui, hope new guards (or old guards that may not have things down) make use of this.
And as for Absolute Resolution, I love it on the Howling King and Lyssa in Arahp4, needed, naw, but instantly stripping confusion stacks can be a lifesaver over the longer cast purging flames in my experience. Saved many people with it on Howling King in the past where previous runs Purging Flames attempts had them eating dirt.

So this guide is for bad PvE PuGs?!
But still, some of the skills are just wrong and not only this, it over all isn’t that usefull.
Telling people what skills to bring is one thing, but if you dont tell them why you dont really help them.

For lupi cheese mode. Stand your ground, Save yourself and Wall of reflection is an awesome loadout. When he switch phase, take your focus and when he stop being invulnerable pop stand your ground and focus 5 so he can’t knock you back or damage you. Place your wall in the right place while you are invulnerable and when he start that attack you just have to release your wall and pop save yourself for the fury (if you don’t have someone to provide it).
That’s the easiest way to do Lupi ever. Even solo is brain dead with that. A bit too easy to be fun.

Thanks for the constructive post! /s
Which instances do you think the skills are wrong (other than AC p1 last boss, which I’m going to correct), and why?
Some people seem to be finding it useful. I am sure most Guardians who I see in PUG groups might find it useful. In any event, do you have any ideas on how to make it more useful?
As for the “why”, my hope is that can be inferred by the “role” section and a knowledge of the mechanics (which if not known, can easily be looked up on gw2dungons, which I’ve already encouraged people to visit). If you think there are instances where that cannot be done, I’ll take a look at it and clarify if necessary. I also wanted to try and avoid a long, wall-of-text type guide, because for the most part it seems like people don’t bother to read or use those types of guides much at all, except for the people who could and would have figured it out on their own eventually, and honestly, the guide is already pretty long (cumulatively) as it is at approximately 9000 words (~36 pages by the international page standard).
Holy mother meta!
Nice guide. We could stand to remove some of the older stickies and put this in its place.
Nice work. It should get a sticky.
I’m not starting to correct all the stuff.
But what I can tell you is, that you can keep Bane Signet for every dungeon path as well as you dont really want to have stability that often. Aegis is most of the time doing a better job cause you wont lose your scholar buff.
Then for example Arah P1 Tar, you went for “try hard” with focus → torch. You can basically do this everywhere.
Another thing is, that I dont really understand what audiance you are talking too. For kinda good people your “role” stuff might be fine, but you advice them bad utility skills.
Beginners on the other hand wont even understand the skill thingy. You should better tell them why you use Skill xy.
For example: Nokk and his Gravity Distortion. First, you can reflect this, you should mention it. Then if you have this debuff on you, when it runs out, you should bring up stability cause it will launch back your teammates and they might fall of the plattform.
I tbh dont need a “guide” like this, when I have to open another “guide” or page like gw2dungeons to look up the skills and why I use skill xy for this.
And at the end, why the hell did you even comment like that on my troll comment, that’s not how it works!
Amazing work. Thank you.
By the way… what about fractals? Any plans regarding them?
Amazing work. Thank you.

Definitely.
Expect something in the future. Exactly when in the future is hard to say, though.
I’ve sent a request to sticky. I hope you get it – nice work!
This is excellent. Great work!
Minor updates and corrections based on suggestions completed.
Updated for the core specializations patch (with possibly more updates to follow as ANET tweaks things). The largest change being that the meta weapon set has shifted away from Sword to Mace, and the offhand weapon has shifted to making full advantage of both Focus and Torch.
Since there isn’t a standard way of annotating the new traits yet (the build editor that’s currently up lists Absolute Resolution as Virtues V for example, when that’s no where in the game), I’ve devised a new method: Line X-Y. Where Line is the trait line (i.e. Virtues), X is the trait level (Adept = A, Master=M, Grandmaster=G), and Y is the location at that level (Top=T, Center=C, Bottom=B), which would make something like Absolute Resolution “Virtues M-C”.
Additionally, there’s a bit of a formatting issue with the new guide for the weapon sets. It says "GS + M/(F?T) (I swear, in the editing window the arrow symbol showed perfectly). This isn’t a big enough issue to comb through and replace the “?” with a manual arrow “->”, at least not given that I’ll likely be updating things again relatively soon and can just fix it then.
As always, any suggestions or things you notice that don’t look quite right are appreciated. It’s an extremely long guide, and I wouldn’t be shocked if a few things have slipped through the cracks of my proofreading abilities.
Enjoy,
Zui
