I made this build just for times I know in advance alot of damage will be taken. You can use it as a grinding spec as well. You will have times in dungeons you just need to stall or hold a mob. The same goes for pvp when you need to hold a few people at a point. By no means is this the end all of specs. Just something a little tanky. For those times It in a sense its a little bit of a selfish build with self preservation. Very good for pvp hard to kill if you choose to use it for that.

Main weapon is sword and shield secondary is greatsword for aoe burst.
Radiance 5
Valor 30
Honor 30
Virtue 5

I’ve been running basically the same build since launch. Its powerful.

I used the 0/5/30/30/5 but decided to upgrade to the 10/0/30/30/0 for more dmg.

I liked your bit at the end where you have to have the last 5 points, but politely it isnt a make-or-break stats… personally imo.

Yea true I say that because it’s so multitalented in use. Especially virtues aoe healing augmented to boon as well.

Yeah its really a matter of preference.

Your way makes alot of sense tho with the PBAoE Blind and the extra Boons from virtues, they are one of the less appreciated abilities guardians have. (f3 can be like a third dodge if your good with timing)

You gain the increase in survivability, and over all battle control. I went off to improve the synergy between WW + Judges Intervention with Fiery Wrath to increase burst dmg.

Great thing about this build is that the guardian “Nerf” doesnt actually affect our play styles or combat since we are utilizing symbols to the fullest. Now we just get to leap faster yay xD

I’m actually running kind of a variant of that, built around mace/shield and hammer. It’s 10 Radiance with Healer’s Retribution, 30 Valor with Retributive Armor/Glacial Heart/Monk’s Focus, and 30 Honor with Writ of Exaltation/Writ of the Merciful/Battle Presence.

The mace symbol does double healing with Writ of the Merciful, and with Exaltation/Merciful, getting three swings off with the hammer is a huge bonus to melee players. Mace/shield provide nice defensive options while the hammer lets me get in to provide some offensive support.

I tend to juggle my utility skills but since I have Monk’s Focus, I do my best to keep at least two Meditation skills at a time. Usually it’s Merciful Intervention and Smite Condition. For elite, I tend to run Tome of Courage for emergency situations or pull out the charrzooka if some ranged damage works better.

Hey,

I was planning on creating my Norn Guardian as a Supportive (healing) Tank.

I read what some of you have done and I was wondering what you all think about the following build I was planning on using. I am a level 30 right now, so I have time to evolve how I play as a Guardian.

Now I play mainly with a Hammer and then my second weapon set is fluid right now, because I’m not sure what I should have it is. Right now it’s a Scepter with Torch for range damage and the additional vulnerability from the Zeal tree.

Let me know what you all think.

I’m currently using this build http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#mVcz9VmGvaomGvao0axx0MVoqosR. I find this one to be a good “Heal Tank” build.

The important trait here is altruistic healing which heals you for every boon you have on an ally and this applies to each stack.

I tested this out yesterday against champions in Orr and I effectively didn’t even have to use my main heal since my boons were stacking and healing me back up to full health and this was while using my Berserker trinkets and not my Paladin ones.

The trick with this build is the might stack you give allies from critical hits and only using the shouts and virtues when you are at half health or lower. At this point you just watch your health climb back up to full.

I would think you want to use signet of mercy to improve healing and healing breeze.

I almost run that exact build. I use 0/0/30/30/10. I really do like that blind in your build tho, but decided against it. Its probably the better pvp spec to deal with thieves.

I did run 0/0/20/30/20 and dropped it after I tested VOR improved benefit from the tactic. What a joke……passive heal went from 191 to 219 @ 1400 heal power and 30 in Honor. The increased boon duration is not worth the loss of AH.

Only difference for me is I put five into Zeal and not Radiance. That’s just more Boons(for heals) and dmg.

I do these to get creative juices flowing. And hopefully someone finds something we all haven’t as a fun build. Plus multiple builds makes a class more interesting. My last one however I’ll put out today later is Weapon Master.

Hey,

These all sound like decent builds for the Guardian, but I see that a lot of you guys like to use Greatswords. Now I’m not harshing on the greatsword, but my play style leans way more toward the Hammer and I found this post:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/guardian/Crithammer-one-way-of-playing-with-it

This build is more toward my play style of my Guardian so this is where I am going with mine, just figured I’d pass on the information.

This is a solid build that I use as well when I anticipate a challenging dungeon run where I’m really being counted on to bring a lot of help for the team.

On the other hand, I personally find it rather painful to grind out PVE with a defensive-focused build like this because a good PVE spec needs offensive and defensive balance. When soloing PVE, this much defense is really overkill and if you are teaming, you can get away with even less of it.

Still, it’s interesting to see the enthusiasm that people are having towards guardians for trying a lot of different things. That’s what makes this one of the great classes in this game.

I’m currently running something not to different to that but I decided to give my guardian a little bit more damage. Lets me kill stuff relatively quickly and not get gibbed when the poo hits the fan.

15/0/30/20/5

I’m very tempted to place 30 points in honer as well but the 10% damage on burning targets was too good to pass up.

For leveling a guardian and the goal is the 0/0/30/30/10 build,
At 40 – what traits should we start down first? Valor or Honor?

At 60 – what traits should we purchase? Valor or honor?

I’m basically trying to find the best way to level this build when I have access to master then grandmaster abilities. I run hammer/staff and my honor tree is focused on symbols. Valor for AH, 5% tough = precision, and purity. I honestly don’t need anything in virtues till I get AH but if I go full Honor for symbols, would those be more effective than AH?

Grr, I just need some more veteran help in choosing which path to go first. Focus is PvE right now and WvW at 80.

@ Artemis

The build you level with can be something completely different than the build you want to run endgame content with because you can reset it at any time with a guardian trainer for a very reasonable fee (max 3s 50c at level 80). That being said, I wouldn’t actually recommend such defensive builds for leveling unless you do alot of dungeon running. It will feel slow and painful, especially if you have experience with other more offensive classes.

If you are just doing solo PVE and the odd teaming for world events, I would focus on 15 in Radiance and 5 in Virtue at the beginning. that should give a good balance of offensive and defensive improvements. Past that, it depends on how you play.

I think ultimately this would be fairly useless. Since the game doesn’t have a traditional tank mechanic, you’d have little to offer in terms of helpful damage or improved utility.

Use a hammer. Get some crit chance up for Empowering Might/Altruistic Healing combo. Whoa la! You have a crithammer build and be much more tankier than using meditations + any other weapon combo, at least in dungeons. In SPvP, stick with meditations since you can’t expect people to be around for Altruistic Healing.

Kinda why I use my paladin build I made i don’t like having to rely on something to heal. That usually always tends to end up in trouble more times then you’d like.

If you’re running with zergs or in parties a lot then altruistic healing is the way to go. You’d rarely have to heal yourself with #6 unless it is a 1/2 shot. I still prefer monk’s focus in Spvp but it depends on your roll entirely.

I use med in pvp pve its a little too selfish for my taste. I prefer aoe healing and passive healing over it works way better. Only time I get hit most cases is failing at a mechanic at that point I deserve the knock down.

Same, Silentstorm.

I came to the same understand (“selffish” came to my mind too) that even tho it may be completely based for supporting yourself it still brings a valuable aspect to parties. In PvE i tend to out-aggro almost everyone anyway (and with very little effort too) so i proceed to kite mobs/boss and lets allies get hit on him while turning back onto them if they should ever focus on someone else. In WvW, im very comfortable, i dont want to boast but it definitely pulls its weight.

Video/montage is already in the works. I’ll let that speak for me when it comes out.

Thanks for the Videos Silent!

Thx I’ve had the same motto every support class I play. If your not healing or helping somehow then just be a straight dps class. To me its kinda useless being a guardian if you don’t actually guard anyone lol…Pvp is different but even there I still through out group heals it makes a world of a difference.
