Pro Murphy: 44 Guardian

I’m really enjoying my guardian in PVE and in sPVP I do a great job holding points by myself. But 1 vs 1s where I need to kill someone, anyone, I can’t finish the job. Help!

I typically take the 3 shouts and heal my party in dungeons. This build has really made me an asset on fractals but as I said, 1 on 1 I’m useless. Any advice?
Base on your stats you have a bunker build going, and bunkers aren’t meant to kill people. They are meant to delay and buy time.
You could probably beat some glass cannon build, but other then that you’re not really going to win 1v1.
So this is a “realize what you are” kind of moment for me. I have an 80 Ranger, maybe I’ll just use that for WVW.
Are those stats in sPvP or PvE/WvW? They seem low in general for PvE/WvW

That doesn’t mean you’re stuck not winning in 1v1s. Just look up any “triple meditation” build generally with sword/focus… you can generally win 9 out of 10 1v1 fights with a build like that once you get used to it.

Just might have to go other trait/equipment routes, same as any profession

How to deal with dd eles? The good ones. I can’t seem to touch them.
Touch – meaning catch or kill? I play both guardian and d/d ele. You won’t catch an ele if they want to get away, just too many options to get away and burst distance. When I’m fighting on my d/d ele I want to draw the fight out since I’m doing smaller damage but good healing. We have 2 knock downs, so stability is good to have. Also, our largest damage dealer is the churning earth which has 5 second cast time, obvious animation and a long cool down. It can be dodged if you time it right. Also a lot of the damage is from the bleed stacks it puts on, so purging conditions is pretty good too.
One of the most memorable times I had fighting a guardian was when I tried to zip around a group of 3 that were capping our camp. I saw he was a hammer guardian and I thought, meh, I play that and I don’t think anything can stop me. Instead I focused on the mesmer which I thought was the greatest threat. He did hammer 5 + JI and I didn’t realize what he had done. I saw the ring on the ground, saw him right next to me and kept trying to zip out of the ring. I didn’t realize what was happening till I died and then looked at the combat log to figure it out. I can only imagine he was chuckling.

I play both aswell so im realy surprised you didnt know that you can dodge through the ring.
Technically I have been told immobilise is the way to deal with them, but they seem under perma stability.
There seems to be nothing you can do to them. You can’t damage or cc them meanwhile they pummel you with various abilities.
Don’t fear the D/D ele. Personally ive never lost to one 1v1 before. Even when it was the enemy commander (RoS commander you know who you are ^_-)
One of my guild mates is also a d/d ele and we fight in sPvP to perfect our builds and playstyles. Nelanb is quite right in that they have one major skill that actually does decent damage to us. This is why you should have hammer 4 ready for when you see them channeling that skill. 5 seconds is plenty of time to be interrupted. Either that or use shield 5.
If you contested on cc skills to disrupt their flow and keep up the damage, eventuallytheywill go down.
Also to remember are your stun breakers and stability skills. Stand your ground I find is absolutely a must have. I sacrifice mobility from swapping retreat just to have it.

In sPvP, you technically never need to kill anyone. Just gotta make sure your point stays capped (or alternatively, if your taking a point, keep them off the point long enough to cap it yourself).
Started playing bunker guard myself recently and its the first time i played a pure bunker builds and gotta say i really enjoy the different play style. I really enjoy the whole point control and team-support role. Only time i really score solo kills is when a glass cannon commits to a long fight and doesn’t disengage soon enough before eating a cc combo + burn damage.
I love reading the book during team fights, seriously, incredibly satisfying lol.

I didn’t realize what it was at first. I was fighting 3 and I’m used to seeing lots and lots of rings on the ground, mostly I can ignore them and dump conditions when they really stack up. My first thought was to zip away. The second time I hit the wall I forgot I could dodge through.

Being able to kill a squishy thief, ele, mesmer, ranger, necro, warrior when they try to capture your point is far easier than to try and just keep the point. Especially in 2v1 situations.
A bunker that can kill has a better chance to surviving 2v1 or even 3v1 due to being able to take out the enemy numbers AND maintain point control.
Good "finisher skills " judge’s intervention / virtue of justice
Your power / critical / condition – are too low for 1 vs 1. In order to win an pvp guardian must have at least 4000 damage finisher . But even if you chase your enemy with judge’s intervention you got really low chances to land 1/2 crit before he is gone. And your criticals won’t hurt him.
An alternative would be another armor set for wvw, and to change traits every time you join WvWvW (cost 3 – 4 silver).
