So I’m relatively new to PvP, and I’ve been wanting to try Burn Guardian. I’m using the build from metabattle and I’ve got a couple of questions:
I don’t really understand what my combo is supposed to be. Right now I’ve been using Judge’s Intervention-Scepter 3-Focus 4-then instantly throw Zealot’s Fire-Purging Flames. Is there a better rotation or combo that I’m missing?
Second, what exactly is the purpose of Sword/Focus? I find myself just using Scepter skills while my burst is on CD and I’m sure I’m doing something wrong. What “filler” abilities should I be using in between Zealot’s Fires?
Lastly, I feel like I’m missing something in the build since I saw a video with a guy at 85% condi duration, but I currently have 65%. Is this how it’s supposed to be?
If anyone has extra tips on this build I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
Sword/Focus is mainly because the focus shield is really good. I prefer greatsword because if you land whirling wrath on someone they get BTFO plus I like the other abilities.
Combo wise I usually go do what you’re doing but I use Cleansing Flame since it hits 9 times it will most likely proc a crit and get you your second Zealot’s Fire before you swap to GS and spin on their face. Really you can just use all of your abilities before swapping.
85% is from Sigil of Smoldering which is used in pvp since you can’t use condi duration food for the 100%
Also personally I like taking Smite Condition over Purging Flames. It gives you a lot more sustain in PvP with the short CD heal and condi clear. Plus the extra damage is good and as an AOE it can proc a lot of hits for VoJ.
There are several build variants of Condi Guardian that should be listed on that “Burst Burning” =/
In the end, it really comes down to how you like to play. Thanks to the buff to Shield, you can actually make any weapon set work depending on what you’re trying to achieve.
Burst Burning
In spite what Metabattle has listed, that’s not a true burst burning build. It was just a build that Tage happened to use in a tournament leading up to the Finals and.. people just copied it.
Burst Burning is basically any build that utilizes Supreme Justice and Permeating Wrath. Greatsword’s does wonders for this build type as GS#3 can apply a max burn stack of 15 in a group of 5. To obtain max dps for this weapon, use Smoldering Sigils (additional burn durations) as burn damages can increase exponentially through rapid F1 activations. It’s an exponential increase of damage because you’re hitting multiple targets at once, each target applying F1 burns to each other. All thanks to Permeating Wrath.
Supreme Justice and Permeating Wrath builds are technically considered niche or one hit poneys because it’s harder to make work in Tournament play. Mainly due to teams able to syncronized condi clears and focus target the guadian who lacks Absolute Resolution (instant condi cleanses) and Stunbreakers (Indomitable Courage). Tage probably had issues with surviving in mid, especially since players are normally spread out. If players are spread out, Condi Guardian can’t apply AoE burns with his Auto Attacks. Instead, we’re reliant on other burn procs to get it done. This is why Sword/Focus and Sc/Torch was chosen over GS and the real burst burning traits.
Burst Burning is still incredibly powerful in unranked – soloQ – PvP… players just aren’t synchronized enough to deal with the amount of burns Permeating Wrath and Supreme Justice can dish out.
Rotations
Sw/Focus + Sc/Torch
If it’s a Mesmer, Thief, or Engi – Or – You need to burst some one down quickly.
Use Torch#4 and Judge’s Intervention at the same time. After the teleport and Torch#4 throw (should happen at the same time) immediately weaponswitch to apply Bleeds (geomancy sigs) and then immediately Scepter#2 to apply Immobilize+Invulnerability.
You just covered your burst burn skills with 3 different conditions. They are less likely to immediately cleanse your 6 burn stacks.
Sword#2 + weapon switch, is a nice way to guarantee a Bleed procs.
Try to use Purging Flames on you to cleanse conditions, preferably before people burst you down. If you’re getting focus targeted, you’re very likely to get Interrupted during casting.
Fighting Necros & Ele
It’s best to save your Judge’s Intervention when you get Feared or Knocked down. Cast Purging Flames during Ele’s Fire Attunements (to cleanse burns) and during the Necro’s Condi Transfers/Currupt Boons.
Otherwise, you want to keep applying damage as much as you can from your auto attacks. Try not to receive huge damages yourself and don’t sacrifice your high cd burst burns right away unless you know you can make them count.

I’ve never known that there are any kind of special tactics besides stacking burn for few second kills and running around with team to not get into 1v1

Assuming you’re implying that burn guards are there mainly for a “fun alternative”, that’s certainly not what it’s about anymore. Now it’s about auto-winning unless your opponent has enough cleansing.

And doing moderate physical damage/reapplying burns so much you can probably still kill most enemies with a lot of cleansing.
It used to be just pretty good but now if they don’t react in time you can hit people in realistic circumstances with 6-8k burn ticks and they really hurt.
