I’ve been doing PvP a long time and while guardians often have a harder time fighting mesmers and necro’s, I do well for myself, I like to think.

Engineers however have always been my achilles’ heel. No matter what I try or what I run, they have an answer to everything and unless they’re mediocre in skill, I can’t seem to reliably down them.

For purposes of tips I’ll list what gives me problems:

- Knockbacks, they lauch me all the time. Stabilty helps but they have so many explosions that if I prevent yourself being launched once, I’ll just be launched ten seconds later if not sooner. I can break some stuns but often the continuous launches do me in in the long run.

- Conditions, They get applied so fast, whenever I use a cleanse to get rid of some really bad ones, five others take their place. Dodging doesn’t seem to work since turrets, grenades bombs and weapons all apply more conditions so while I might avoid confusion and cripple, I’ll just get bleed and poison. And unless I can single out poison, cleanse it and heal, they just kill me over time.

- Their healing. Unless I see it asap and manage to get in range – often impossible due to crippe/chill/immo – and nuke their healing turret, the healsplosion heals so much HP that I can’t seem to burst them down reliably. I’ve gotten engies to low HP a lot but they use this and it’s a complete reset. While they do this and slow me, the conditions just wreck me. I’ve often gone down while an engie is in mini form simply because they managed to stack so many condi’s on me and I couldn’t cleanse them all.

Overall, I’m at a loss. Please give me some advice, you fellow guards on how to nuke these technological maniacs back to the stone age.

If you just want to tryhard counterbuild in 1v1 just go condi guard. Wait for healing turret which is pretty much their only cleanse, press 3 buttons and you won.

At least that’s how I killed the engis I was up against in the last ESL 1v1 cup and it worked out. I got 100g out of it so hey.

If you don’t want to counterbuild and win with a normal meditation spec there are a few things you can probably do better.

The scepter imob is pretty stronk against them but they have a bunch of things they can do against it. You should try imobing them when their transmute trait, their toolkit block and their healing turret are on cooldown. You can make sure that your imob won’t get transmuted by using it together with active virtue of justice since it will always immune burning and your imob will hit.

Since they have a bunch of blocks, knockbacks and most of them run protection on cc bursting them usually doesn’t work out to well. The thing engis hate the most from meditation guard is smite condi and greatsword/sword autoattack. Instantly pulling after hitting binding blade is usually worse than waiting a bit with it, they might panic and insta use their elixir s. Also you have the potential to pull them out of whatever block they have up after you hit binding blade which means that they won’t try blocking as long as they have this debuff thingy.

The best time to use your cleanses is when you just got an incendary powder proc and geo/doom swap. After that they won’t rly apply a lot of condis unless you tank stuff you shouldn’t tank if you would play well. Also making sure that focus 4 hits so it will cleanse you can be pretty good. You can do that by imobing them first or precasting it and porting with JI which is only worth if you REALLY need a cleanse though since JI is kind of your most important cooldown.

What is the build you are running?
Maybe your build excels at other things then engi’s?

I think it’s not very usefull to you to give blind support on how to take on engi’s, as some things might be tips / tricks your build doesn’t even have.

Also: Don’t change your build for one specific class, cause with the next build you might be strong against engi’s but weak against thiefs.

against engi the most valuable weapon is my scepter
range weapon which allow me to hide time to time against those turrets and proc some dmg on the engi
when i see him panic or use heal then i burst with gs combo

i also like to use hybrid guard 6,2,6,0,0 carrion build so the conditions just east them bite after bite

1. Save dodges for grenades. If youre using sw/f you can counter most of the other skills with blocks and blinds and ZD.
2. Generosity sigils help
3. If vs condis, count to 9 and dodge the swaps (or blind)
4. You can usually predict overcharged shot.
5. Save contemplation of purity. You really dont need to use this skill vs celestial engis until youre about to be kittened by either slick shoes or an overcharge combo.
6. If vs Elixir S make sure you land your binding blade 2x in a row. Its practically a gauranteed win since their stunbreak is 60s.
If vs Slick Shoes, dont really use binding blade unless you know you can and want to land a smite condition for sure. If they burn their stun break for some reason because they can, make sure you DEFINITELY land it.
7. Land Focus 4 every single time, you lose if you dont. I use it when they use magnet usually.
8. Save JI vs Cele Rifle. Like with most celestial builds, JI needs to be saved for CC, not for doing dmg. The classes have too many ways to stop a burst which means its best usage is to save yourself.
9. Land smite condition. Every. Single. Time.
10. Outplay them. If they’re in grenade kit, sit back and turn around a little and watch them throw the grenades in the wrong spot. Once they have, using Flashing Blade to get back up to them and they wont have anymore greandes to land at ther feet.

In the end, just play perfectly. Its lame but medi guard really is OP at the highest skill level in 1v1s.

oh and if they drop crate or theyre a good cele engi with slick shoes you wont win every unfortunately (with sword at least)

Thanks for the advice. Basically, what I’m getting from this is: Watch what he does and make him pop his CC and heals and work him down step by step.

Generally, what gets me is that I can’t see what they’re going to do. Much of it is instant and other things are hard to predict. Still, good advice, thank you.

As for rifle engineers, when ever they suddenly rush you, that’s when they’ll use overcharged shot. Higher tier Engi’s will know exactly when they’re in range for the shot but lower tier Engi’s will almost always go towards you first then use it. I’ve purposely dodged their abilities before, practice makes perfect!

I’ve never seen a shout build duel or 1v1 efficiently. They’re only ever useful if they’re on a 2v2 or 3v3 specific teams. Even then, the usual 21614 can output more damage.

I’ve been wrong before though

I don’t see this killing a good engineer. The power is very low, the crit chance is average and it’s got no condi dmg. It has healing and defensive stats but healing rolls are nerfed in PvP and high HP doesn’t deal dmg. It’s got condi cleanse but no offensive abilities. This’d keep people alive longer yes but wouldn’t kill it in a dual, even a well placed wall wouldn’t return enough damage to actually lower his HP significantly. A good engie or even a turreteer would just walk around and bomb you till you run out of stuff because you can’t pressure him.

I’m guessing the point of that build is not to actually kill the engineer.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

I’ve changed up my build a bit over the past few weeks. I’ve gone back to the old 2/6/6/0/0 medi build with increased crit on one handers. Against both mesmers and engy’s I just stay at range blasting my scepter/focus and get them as low as possible, while spamming blinds and immob. When they DO get near me I’ll switch to hydromancy greatsword and dish out the killing blow. If they survive I’ll try to kite again and keep going until they do die it’s what I’ve found works best for me at least

^This

Use Chians of Light when the engi is near hi healing turret then Smite. All engis use the same Elite (Supply Crate) and once you enter “their zone” you’re gonna have a hard time surviving so scepter and Binding Blade (GS) or Banish (Hm) to get them out of “their zone”

About knockbacks: Don’t know what build you use but asuming you use the 2 most common builds

→ Meditation: Use Judge’s Intervention as soon as you get knocked to get near the engi, then push, pull him/her or just burst. Save condi cleansing, don’t spam your skills.

→Bunker: Stand Your Ground and Save Yourselves will get you back on your feet. Decap engis have limited knockbacks, don’t use stability when you’re immobilized (range attack with scepter or Staff).
