How do i catch / escape enemies in wvw
Rune of speed and boon duration.
I use hammer + scepter/shield and have no problems keeping people controlled and stop them from getting away (other than eles with their mist form -.-). If you don’t like scepter then try a 1h sword for the teleport on that instead. I do like having a (somewhat) ranged option personally… but agree that the scepter needs some love.
2 roots, ji + RoW (lol and watch people faceplant trying to get out of it), and 2 kittendowns with banish & Shield of Absorption… that is a LOT of control.
As far as getting away… I use JI to port away and onto a random mob, and save yourselves for the protection + swiftness… they are also both stun breakers.
I also use full runes of the pack to give me swiftness when hit and increase swiftness duration… if you’re running AH it also heals you. That 5% swiftness proc activates often when running away… since I’ll usually have a lot of people pew pewing at me and has saved my life many times.
Pack runes + 2h mastery + the staff makes getting across the map in WvW a breeze as well.
Also use your judgements well… having virtue of courage traited for 3s of stability is nice… with renewed focus it’s 6s total plus that invuln time… should help stop them from rooting you etc… but that’s dependent on what your build allows.
Hopefully this helps and shows that being able to catch and escape isn’t just about swiftness. It’s often more about your total mobility and control.

I play greatsword, scepter/shield and enemies have hard time running away from me, for most classes.
I can use Leap of Faith, Binding Blade and pull them. In case of running too slow, I have “Retreat”, “Save Yourselves” (which btw, with Soldier’s rune, it might heal cripple/frozen). I can teleport to them using Judge intervention. Scepter has immobilize, I dodge roll in front of them and push them back with shield.
I don’t think you need more than this.
This is good when they run away, and even when they are trying to sneak pass you, to get inside their own tower in WvW.
It’s difficult.
1) Try focusing on removing conditons on yourself so you’re constantly at top run speed.
2) Ji
3) Then use the weapons you have: Scepter/(torch/focus), GS, Hammer.
4) Keep them blinded.
There are classes, which when played well, you will ~never~ catch. I don’t mean the puggies or weekend warriors… the kids who know wtf they’re doing and play all day long.
Ele’s / Thieves / Hunters.
Messmers are difficult when they’re the shattercat spec… it’s a pain in the kitten to soak up all those confussions/reflections/retaliation/dazes and of course 8k Mind Wracks (lol) while teleporting and invis’n all over the place.
But yeah, if they get through your CC ( JI/Leap/blink – Chains – Wardings), you can basically wave goodbye.
Retreat for long speed boost. Use GS leap. Use blink ob sword. Judges intervention. Use sceptre and hammer immobalise. There are options.

i do use 1 hand sword its not enough when all classes now have permanent 25 percent speed boost

i know its not about switfness, i constantly use save yourselves, stand your ground, and i have 10 in virtues i always use my virtues when im escaping / chasing i dont use meditations, i would like to think im a pretty experinced educated gw2 player ive had the game for 3 months now. and i have 5 characters

ive tried all these things its not enough.
im not talking about facing new players or unexperinced players, you guys are telling me the obvious ways to catch people that ive tried, im talking about players who know how to use their cripples/speedboosts/dodges/25 percent speed boost/panic button/invisability/ (which now every class has cept engi and guardian thanx to update)

I run with -65% con duration. Their conditions dont slow me down enough to get away. Also if your a human guardian you can always use prayer to lyssa for random cobdition. You get cripple and chill quite often. 1200 range insta cadt.

Another thing you can do is sanct/Line of warding/retreat. Make sure your not targeting anything behind you and GS leap. If your fortunate after that further get away with JI by targeting a enemy or mob in front of you. Even if its out of reach you will still take off towards it. Also don’t forget your aegis to asorb a hit.
As well as sceptor’s/focus 5 skill to asorb some more hits. Or do a smooth spin lock in place with sceptor and back around keep booking it.
Guardian Paladin 2.5 Build,So We Are 80 Series “Weekly”
Guardian Berserker 3.0 Build
to add, ring of warding on the hammer as well.
i’ve turned off auto targeting. and this way you can just click the groudn to untarget, makes leaping a LOT easier and you don’t go where you didn’t mean to go. more often than not, which can result in defeat in WvW with one leap in the wrong direction.
i use shelter as a heal as well. and renewed focus. with those, given all skills off CD. you can blind with F1 (if traited), a block F3, regain some health if losing it fast F2, hit shelter, 2 sec invul. hit RF, another 3 second shelter, and you get your AoE blind and block again.
cleanse conditions and stun breaks! you can go about this several ways. a couple of the utilities, as well as soldier runes x6 with shouts or Pure of Voice trait with shouts.

I have the same problems with the 1h weapons. Staying on your target is a nightmare.
JI + Hammer
This gives you Ring of Warding, a Root Skill, a Teleport and a nice Short Range Leap attack.
Hammer is pretty cool once you get over the speed of the 1 chain.
Couple this with either GS or Scepter and you will have less problems.

i dont use a gs i use sword/focus / staff
may consider sceptor but so far staff seems better mid range weapon as it goes thru walls and is aoe, and it actually hits stuff.
so to be effective i need to use one weapon set (not to mention a specific combo)
i want to say scepter is better for roming or 1v1 or maybe 1vfew battles. though better for chasing down enemies.
staff is definitely very strong in zerg vs zerg or larger scaled battles. can be used for both stopping enemies fleeing (though you’re rooted when casting #5 LoW) and also for getting away. many times, i’ve been abel to cast LoW in front of me and run past it, with #3 for swiftness and enemies get stuck behidn the wall a bit so gives you a little more breathing room.

How is scepter better for chasing down enemies when the #1 skill on it is slower than normal running speed? I know, chains, but that’s a one and done thing.
Guardians are not meant to chase down runners. Sorry, but every single alt I have can escape from a Guardian with little effort.
retreat and a signet to kd wich i dont remember the name i believe is the one that gives you 90 power.
