How do we kill mesmers?

Kill the clones first and watch the mesmer flop about like a fish out of water.

Just make sure they’re not the bad exploding type.
Offensive pressure seems to work well against mesmers. I’ve had better results with the GS and Hammer than a mace/shield.
Just a fyi, but Mesmers can’t use shields. So I’m guessing that was a typo?
Fojja – Vyxxi – Nymmra – Mymmra – Champion of Dwayna .. and more
Highly Over Powered Explorers [HOPE] – Desolation EU

Nah I thought those were the weapons that Kita was using. :P

That’s exactly the reason you should kill the clones. -_-

I apologize for my poor attempt at humour.
Maybe find a nice place between offense and defence, with knight gear and valor trait
line (for the +30% critdamage), and just keep spamming staff auto attack to hit all the
clones as well as the mesmer itself. Then once the clones are gone, switch to sword (for
the high damage 3rd chain attack), sticking to him with meditation teleport and sword
teleport, and killing him before he kills you. With monk’s focus you can get nice heals
with meditations, though I prefer having signet of judgment along with 2 meditations,
for the nice +10% damage reduction, which is worth a lot of toughness.
I use smite condition, judge’s intervention, and signet of judgment. So two ~1200 heals,
and 10% damage reduction. I also get the trait to reduce signet cooldown, so the signet
healing skill recharges a bit faster. Against fast attacks you might even want to activate
judgment for the retaliation, with the 16s cooldown it’s not too bad I think.
I just wish Zealot’s Defence wasn’t so bad, it almost ruins the sword weapon. Damage
is just too low, the projectiles don’t have enough range, and blocking projectiles for a
short time like that just isn’t very useful, it should reflect at least, or be used on the move so you can at least use it to close in on the projectile-user.

they are all the exploding type… mesmers do like to stack confusion
Like others stated the best way to deal with Mesmers is to be aggressive against them. Most just run GS and try to stick back and pew pew you, but if you get up in their face they panic a lot of times.
Also go straight for the player ignore the clones. Most players have it that you get conditions when you kill their clones, so you are only hurting yourself. Another big thing is you want to hit them with some type of slow or immobilize that will help greatly.
I play both so I have a pretty good grasp what to do for Mesmer vs. Guardian and vice versa.
Heavens Rage
i play a shout guardian 0-0-30-30-10 build, with mace-shield and sword scepter
i ussually jump in with the sword teleport, then see the damage, if he hits hard, i go mace and just soak/evade dmg with shouts *, i also always go straight for him and leave the clones behind, then when his initial burst is of i swap back to sword and focus and just start killing him and with aegis, stability, sword tele,… i can mostly keep up when chasing. works for me , altough i have to say it might take a while
Mesmers can’t currently generate phantasms if they are blinded, or if the target is blocking or invulnerable. If you dodge while he’s casting a phantasm, there is no phantasm either. They were really screwed over with the nov 15th patch.
Fyi, phantasms are normally about 60% of a mesmers dmg output.
go tank build he cant do no harm to you, and then chase him
My main is a Mesmer and i have a low level guardian.
In my experience the only guardians that can come close to beating me have to pressure me,like a couple of people have already said, just ignore the clones.
Firstly the mesmer will deploy 2 clones and a Phantasm immediately, ignore them and make a beeline for him. Now he will do one of three things.
1) He will hit shatter, you will know he did this because the clones will all start moving towards you. This is quite simple to dodge if you know what to look for.
2) He will dissapear for 3 seconds leaving a clone behind, you will know he has done this because there will be .5 of a second before the cloan becomes visable. So just AoE the area and wait for him to pop out of stealth, he can’t get far.
3) He will use blink (teleports him a short distance away) this can realy confuse the crap out of people.
Basicaly the clones dont hurt you much, so leave them alone and concentrate on the mesmer, they hurt much more if you kill them than if you dont.
If the Mesmer is glass cannon spec (low toughness) and you keep your eye on him and watch out for the shatter, then he is toast. If he is specced toughness then he will usualy wear you down after a long fight.
My mesmer is specced toughness so thieves can’t oneshot me and i find it works realy well vs Guardians and all other melee. The only melee that beat me are the ones that aren’t fooled by the clones and dodge the shatters.
I have only two lvl 80 toons — mesmer and guardian. I love them both. Mesmers rely upon two things (in general) to win the fight: illusions and kiting.
If you identify the real mesmer you have a much better shot at winning because you’ve taken away the shell game. The easiest method is to use CTRL-T on the real memser before any clones appear. The red target reticule will stay on the real mesmer throughout the fight. If that ship has sailed, then find the mesmer with a graphic by his name (map completion star or WvW commander shield). Those graphics don’t appear by the clones’ names. Lastly you can look at the off-hand weapon if the mesmer is using 1H gear. The off-hand will not appear in the off-hand of the clones. The CTRL-T method is the best here.
To counter the kiting you’ll need a few tools: (1) gap closers, (2) immobilizers, (3) condition removers. Don’t forget condition removal. If it’s a GS mesmer you’ll be crippled a lot. Close the gap with various wep and utility skills. We also have more than a few immobilizes in our toolbox.
Clones will drop quick with some AoE but I would ignore them if you can identify the real mesmer. There are a few reasons for this: (1) a shatter mesmer can make more clones in a heart-beat, (2) they’ll just shatter them in your face for 2k crits per clone, (3) killing a clone in melee range may give you cripple, confusion, or some other condition.
Illusions are a different story and they can hit you hard — but consider that it’s front-end damage. The illusion will likely attack before you even get close enough to kill it. Then it’s on c/d until it’s next attack 7-10 seconds later. It’s probably shatter fodder before then.
Great sword, binding chain all his clones/illusions and him pull them into you kill them all in one go.
use staff, spam 1, finish him with skill 2. mesmers are a cake walk.
You guys are getting off topic. I use a Sword/Focus and Scepter/Shield. I’m not going to throw on a Staff or Greatsword just for one class I can’t seem to 1v1 as easily as others.
I use 10/30/30/0/0 and 3 meditations. Knight amulet, Berserk jewel.
Next time I see a mesmer, I’ll try cutting down the illusions fast. JI and Smite Conditions are still technically AoEs.

With 3k armor I get hit repeatedly by some mesmers for 3k. What ability is this? It seems nearly spammable.
