Not dependent at all, just choose the build you want to play and then choose the gear of your liking and that supports the build of your choice.

Go for a 0/0/30/20/20 build.

Purity
Retributive armor
Altruistic healing
Superior aria
2h mastery or larger symbols for a retaliation setup for the team when wielding gs.
Consecrated ground
Master of consecrations

For utilitys you use stand your ground, hallowed ground and wall of reflection.

Runes i would go for 2* superior monk, 2 superior water and 2* major sanctuary/monk. With traits this will give you 60% boon duration which is massive with the amount of stability this build has over 20 seconds of aoe stability which is the best support you can give your team in wvw.

Combine it with a staff when there is no swiftness in the team and the staff alone is close 100% uptime on swiftness.

if you use a GS then you can also use it as a group retaliation setup with SyG and SoW and if you combine hammer and GS its 100% uptime on aoe retaliation if you trait vengeful.

So basically hammer and gs when moving around or want 100% uptime on aoe retal. Hammer/GS and staff when you need swiftness or want to support with retal and stability.

Two setup of gears imo, knights and clerics, the latter for duels and the former if you want to be in your face and also deal some nice damage.

The link below with clerics is a superstrong group focused retal build. If you need a bit more dps, swap some of the clerics accessories for magi for mor crits. 20-25% is enough for have some major impact as long as there is Fury in the team.

The link below is great supporter with reflections and stability and ranged consecrations and pretty decent dps with knights and berserkers gear.

Both setups are tanky as hell if played correctly but the clerics is more forgiving and less demanding.

Omnomberry pie and master maintenance oil in both builds.

You will be relatively weak versus conditions but imo use signet heal if that is the case and get two passive removals each 10 seconds. In group play i find conditions to be of less concern.

Or go for a 0/0/30/30/10 and get Pure of voice and swap one consecration for hold the line and you have two shouts that remove conditions teamwide.

Berserker weapons in both builds and you will have 40% crit with clerics and fury from the team and close to 40% critdamage in clerics and still dodge heal for over 1.2k.

With a knights setup we are talking about close to 70% critchance.

So do you want laidback easy mode retal with aoe stability/reflection or aoe stability/reflection and a dps in your face supporter, its up to you and both can be achieved with this build.

Btw drop hallowed ground when you have 50% health in the middle of your group and see what happens with your health while stacking 16 seconds of stability. And people think empower on the staff is OP, lmao.

Edit forgot to mention signet of judgement for the retal build. Its just huge as it also causes aoe weakness which in combination with hallowed ground frigging dominates the area of your choice.

Usually, going with a full Knight’s set provides a good base for many different builds. It provides high toughness for tankish builds, moderate power, and high precision. The high toughness allows you to use consumables to gain another 5% crit/100 power, depending on your spec. On top of that, you can use your accessories and weapons to direct your stats whichever way you want. Full berserker’s for a sturdier DPS role, mix of knight’s and berserker’s for a DPS-oriented tank, and full knight’s for full on tanking.

Personally, I run a 0/0/30/30/10 AH build with a mix of berserker ascended and knight’s accessories, with berserker’s weapons. 3k armor, 2800 attack, 48% crit, 15.5k HP, and 49% crit damage.
