I’m one of those people that like to have just one main character and prefer to not swap around. so I just came back about a week ago from not playing for 2 years cause I sold my pc.
I use to mostly play a guardian but I only ever really did like one dungeon and map completion I got like 40% done. I found the Guardian back then you be clunky. and just wasn’t my thing.
when I came back I joined a guild told theme the rough idea of what I’d like to accomplish which are I’d like to get into doing pve content and aswel as wvw and to be capable to hold my own in a fight even if it came to beingredients 1v2 or 1v3.
I like to have the ability of support but I want to be able to kick some butt lol.
for some reason I was looking at mesmer. my guild recommended I give rev a try as it sounds like exactly what I’m looking for. I’m just unsure with me wanting to do it all with one which one fits better?

With guardian ur sure to have a good time in all gamemodes. Its a good roamer in wvw and also very needed for zergs. In spvp its fun to play and also good, and in so it is in pve. Medi guard is really nie for wvw and not to hard to gear up.

my guardian is in mostly Knights heat with trooper runes from 2 years ago. Haven’t unlocked all. of dh yet either. it uses to feel clunky to me I haven’t really tried to do much yet. was curious if I should be giving it a go or do rev like suggested or try out mesmer like I was thinking either way both I’d have to level up

Guardian has a strong presence in every game mode. Rev is still alright in most places, and mesmer has specific roles to fill. Any option will be a good one. My advice is to have one of each class. Even if you don’t use them all, it’s much easier to swap as necessary with all the account bound things.

I’m hearing more and more that Rev isn’t so good. so my choices it seems are guardian or mesmer and I have no idea on mesmer how it fits in with wvw pvp and pve. well really neither do I know guardian for those things.

2 years ago guardian felt clunky to me and i couldn’t choose 2 weapons for the life of me. with my very limited amount of time to play I don’t want to focus on multiple toons yet I only want the one lol

I run mostly lb/sw/shield but i change to scepterfocus or scepter shield or mace focus or GS or Hammer. Only weapon i dont use in wvw is torch and staff.

I’ve use started playing with lb but fully haven’t blocked dh yet. I like the looks of greatsword it tends to be fun. when I use to play in quite enjoyed the sword but didn’t give shield or focus a good try. hammer felt clunky to me but it’s starting to feel a bit better aND I usually always have a Staff on me while I’m using around wvw or even map completion..

it seems rev has been cut from the equation so I’m deciding between a mesmer and my guardian now

In PvE, both classes excel in group content (mesmer even more than guard), but in my experience, mesmer is a pain when you’re solo while guard still cuts quickly through everything. For sPvP and PvD, erm WvW, I can’t really offer any profound insights.

Mesmer is more difficult to learn than guard but is much more mobile and can have crazy combies with continuum split and has strong condi builds and better CC.
Guardian has better AoE burst than Mes and more blocks. Both work well as bunker and support.I play both soo, yeah i cant give you an advice just pros and cons^^’

After swapping to engi then rev i can only say that i m back to guardian.
For some reason this class have all that l want. Good dps and awesome protection. I even protect a rev to commune to balthazar hp once without even fight inside fires and walk away both of us like a boss.
Whatever class i play i m sure my guardian will always be my main.
Currrnt build full marauder with travelers for general pve and fractals and full zerk with scholar for raids.
I also like mesmer a lot but i only play pvp with him as all those phantasm and confusions are too much fun in there.
If you feel you want some more why not play both

been trying to just choose one because of my limited time I get to play. but it does seem my guild would have more use of me to play the Guardian and Imesmer thinking I can come up with a build I’d enjoy for pve content.
started looking and I like the way a shield looks and I’ve liked the sword skills but maybe for wvw I’d swap the sword for a mace and run with hammer or staff as my secondary.

All and i mean it , all weapons are viable for guardian so you’ve got to have them all in your inventory to swapping for every situation.
If you ’re under 80 without elite spec i suggest sc/torch-sw/focus or shield for general pve content.
If you have your elite spec then swap sc/torch for longbow for going higher than 900 range but in general sc/torch have better dps.
After 60 put traveler runes to see yourself a bright day when general roaming
Also i suggest you to avoid spamming the same thread to every single class forum just to take an advice from each main proffecion.
Better take this to general to get you correct answer. Asking for guardian in guardian class or mesmer in mesmer class you ll not taking any good results. Ppl will laways protect their choice..

Idk if you’re still looking for an answer, but i can offer some insight on Guardian, mesmer and revenant in regards to wvw.

Lets start with the Guardian, Essential in any zerg, and great in roaming groups or just by yourself. Lots of support with easy access to group stability and aegis, condition clear, healing, other boons like might, regen, swiftness, protection ect. All this while still being able to do a decent amount of spike damage and just being in general easy to pick up and play. Would recommend staff/hammer and building a bit tankier for zergs, you can use mace/shield as well though its a bit trickier to use to its full effectiveness than staff. If roaming a meditrapper build with gs, sword/focus,longbow, sword/shield any combination of these are very effective.

Revenant also very much needed in zergs and great roamers as well. Access to the ever important resistance boon which negates all condi damage as long as you have it, and can be applied to your entire party making revs very strong. Lots of cc, damage reduction and other group benefits as well as doing a decent amount of damage with hammer. Recommend dwarf/demon stance, though if you wanted to swap dwarf out for the glint one that would be fine as well. For roaming most use sword/shield and staff with glint/shiro, the burst damage in this build is incredibly high, one thing i would take warning of though is that you won’t have a lot of ways to deal with conditions outside of your demon stance and that can screw you over rather quickly if you don’t pick your fights carefully.

Mesmer is the only class of the three i would say isn’t particularly needed in larger groups right now, but commanders generally won’t complain about having a good mesmer on their side. You’ll be mostly there for a bit of resistance, quickness and other various boons, as well as boonstrip/condi clear and putting down veils and portals for your commander when they ask for them. You don’t have a lot of aoe damage, so try to lock down single targets when you can, sword/shield and greatsword will help you achieve this, though there may be better options, honestly don’t play mes a whole lot.
For roaming mesmer sees a bit more of a solid foothold, with strong power and condi builds, and access to high burst damage from stealth, moa for locking down single targets you can kill people pretty quick to start things snowballing in your favour. With strong disengage as well they are very much desired for group roaming as well as being strong solo roamers.

Hopefully this helps answer your question. o7

A little late to the party (possibly too late), but since I effectively “main” both guardian and mesmer, I thought it might be worthwhile to throw in my 2c.

First, if it doesn’t require buying character slots, I’d definitely encourage trying out everything you’re considering. You never know for sure if the playstyle of a particular profession is going to suit you until you give it a good tryout for yourself.

That said, here are my thoughts on guardian and mesmer:

They’re actually quite similar, at least in my experience. Someone who’s good at mesmer can probably transition to guardian without too much readjustment time. Going the other way might be more difficult, since mesmer has more moving parts that need to be mastered, but it’s probably still one of the easier transitions to mesmer. Both rely a lot on active defences, both personal and area-based (Feedback, Shield of Absorption, Nullification, Purging Flames). Both can get a lot of Stability, although meta mesmers presently tend to do without, and both can offer a lot of party support, particularly in PvE situations. Both have a profession mechanic that involves sacrificing a passive effect for an active one (although mesmer shatters are more complicated than guardian virtues). Heck, even spirit weapons used to work a bit like illusions, except that each one had a unique ‘shatter’ rather than a profession-based one.

There are four distinctions that I would pull out, though:

First, mesmers tend to be single-target focused and have trouble dealing with multiple opponents (pocket raptors are death for a vanilla mesmer), while guardians are a lot more AoE-oriented.

Second, guardians are designed for getting into the thick of melee and staying there, pulling ranged weapons when for whatever reason that’s not viable. Mesmers, while having melee options, are intended more for kiting and shooting from a distance, avoiding being hit. (There was a patch where all ability for mesmers to apply Retribution to themselves was removed, because “mesmers shouldn’t want to get hit”.)

Third, guardian balance is more stable. It’s a common sardonic joke on the guardian forum to repeat ArenaNet’s statement that ‘guardian is in a good place’, since guardian has never been on top of the meta… but I think that’s part of what ArenaNet means. They’ve never been trash-tier, but they’ve also never been god-tier and in need of a beating from the nerfbat, and instead they’re in roughly the spot that they’re trying to balance everything else to. As a result, guardian nerfs have tended to be more along the lines of tweaks than something that completely destroys a build or sends the profession careening from god-tier to trash-tier. Mesmer, though… seriously, some of the mesmer rebalances could give you whiplash.

Fourth, mesmers rely on their illusions, and there’s no getting around that. In PvP, it’s all about the shatters, in PvE, you often want to leave them out, but the profession is balanced around ‘we have illusions’. Guardians… do not have that reliance on AI. If you like illusions, then obviously this won’t be a problem. If you’re one of those ‘never rely on AI allies!’ people (you see a lot of them on the engineer forum…), then this could be a deciding factor.

Now, the first two have been adjusted a bit by the new elite specialisations, and may change more with new elite specialisations in the future. The third could also change in the future. However, the fourth will probably never change, as mesmer reliance on illusions is baked into the profession.

When it comes to revenants… they’re similar to guardians and mesmers, especially when running Glint: there’s a high focus on active defences, party support (except Shiro) and Glint’s facets have the ‘sacrifice a lasting effect for an immediate one’ aspect. However, it’s hard to make sweeping statements like the above because revenant is essentially five mini-professions that you assemble together to make a build.

From my viewpoint, I really wanted to like it, but I find it’s crippled by the lack of build options. Having only one true ranged weapon is costing them – when it got nerfed, PvP revenants pretty much became melee-only. With other professions, if a particular skill is underperforming or not quite what you want for some reason (which could be ‘it just got nerfed’), you can trade it out for something that will work better… which can be as simple as looking at the other team’s team comp in sPvP and deciding that you need a little more condition removal then you would normally take or a little more anti-CC. Revenants can’t do that, so making a revenant build for PvP is often a matter of deciding which crippling weaknesses you can most afford to have rather than setting your own balance.

Top-level players say revenant is still god-tier, but the various nerfs that have been hitting it has set a high skill floor to achieve that, while making it harder for builds other than the meta Shiro/Glint to be viable. The esports players are also likely looking at it in terms of building a team rather than going solo: if you’ve got condition removal from a teammate, the weakness of the Shiro/Glint build (not much you can do about conditions apart from movement-inhibiting ones) can be ameliorated, but in soloqueue it can be pretty unforgiving, particularly with the nerfs Facet of Light and Enchanted Daggers recently took.

thank you very much for your input. I haven’t had much of a chance to play alot i did do some spvp with guardian and been finding I like the look and uses of a shield so I’ve been using a sword along side that.
been thinking if I continued spvp with guardian scepter would be a better choice. I also like the greatsword.

I haven’t gotten to do much more dungeons as of yet either. it’s been a toss up of going out and gathering/ getting way points and leveling armor smithing. and trying to learn wvw but wanting the pve aswel haha

I’m still interested in mesmer aswel I have yet to fully unlock a elite spec on any toons.

The most popular weaponsets in PvP at the moment are sword/focus as the melee set and either longbow or sceptre/shield as the ranged set. I find sword/shield works fairly well, though (mind you, I was using shield back when everyone said it sucked, and I even got sledged a couple of times for using it).

I see greatsword occasionally as a more aggressive option – haven’t paid much attention to what it’s paired with, but I’d guess it’s usually paired with sceptre/focus to get some defensive skills from that angle.

it’s kind of the reason I look at warrior for greatsword is cause I love the way it feels and looks and I love being mobile lol.

I’m trying to learn the Guardian cause 2 years ago it’s what I spent gems on for bag slots and everything. plus it seems more wanted for wvw i was more so.hoping for one character for all game modes
