Since this is the case, I am entitled to your fullest attention regarding my guardian build.

First, this is for PVE, mostly WvW.

The way I run my guardian is Greatsword/Staff, focusing on shouts and Judge’s Intervention while retaining my Asura lineage at times.

You may have to copy/paste it. Basically, what I need help with are runes and sigils.

My Armor is full soldier, along with a Knight amulet, earring and ring, a Valkyrie earring and ring, a Beserker Greatsword and finally a Rampager Staff. I’ll get to Trident and Spear exotics later…

I went with the HotW armor for the stats and looks, but not the runes. Though Sanctuary is good, I know I could do better. First know, I have tons of survivability. If I can make a fight last longer than 10 seconds, I’m almost guaranteed a win. I just hope this isn’t due to the +155 Vit from Sanctuary though.

Rune Ideas:

Balthazar: I have low condition damage and duration. However, the increased duration and power bonus from Balthazar could prove useful. The 6th skill burns enemies for 3 seconds whenever I use a healing skill. However, I need to confirm if that would also work for Empower. If not, its useless since Resolve has the longest CD of all healing skills.

Flame Legion: Again, heavily reliant on burning, which I have little of.

Strength: This is the one I was thinking of going with. “+5% dmg while under the affects of might.” I’m ALWAYS under the effect of might with my greatsword!

Baelfire: Could be useful when I suicide rush into 10 enemies in WvW, since I seem to do that a lot.

Pack: Only because whenever I recover a ton of HP whenever I apply boons to myself and allies

Eagle: Could help with those endurance battles.

Dolyak: If I knew how good the regen was, maybe.

Earth: Could defiantly help me get out of combat faster

Forge: Protection is always nice

Divinity: Because I’m sure there’s a reason why these go for nearly 4g a piece

Sigils:

Battle: I only really switch to staff when I can’t attack or when I need to heal myself for 6k and my allies for 2k. Yes, this was just so I could brag. After Swap’s CD is done, I immediately switch back. Though since I’m switching to Greatsword, that could only mean I’m trying to get back into the fight.

Accuracy: Ignore the link, I typically clock in 30% Crit Chance with 50% Crit Dmg.

Bloodlust: Only problem is that my staff has a sigil of Luck

Fire: AoE attacks are sort of my thing. Note that this does NOT cause burning. Its just like Air, only the damage is spread out in an AoE.

Minor Accuracy: I really don’t like stackable effects, though its not due to the Luck. Its just like Glass Cannons. You never know whats going to happen in combat so you may as well gear up for the worst. I could spend 2 minutes killing 25 critters, only to go down in a few – and this is coming from a behemoth

Dolyak is 30HP/s.

Condition Duration is pretty much “meh” for you.

Pack bonus was bugged and didn’t work ( though this may have been fixed )

That Dolyak regen is pretty meh. I think I have around 18k hp since nearly every piece of armor gives me vit. I feel like I need more power or precision, but I want a cool effect. Not just stats.

Forge seems like the best suit for you despite the “meh for condition damage.” It has a burn and a 15% duration increase on it all in one in addition to protection and a useful stat.

Divinity is my personal favorite but that’s because I’m a balance die-hard and love that it gives stats to everything. Despite my preference, Divinity really isn’t suited toward specialization and it wouldn’t add anything particularly useful for your build. The price-point on Divinity is only so ridiculous because it gives the most stat points, not because it’s better or as good as anything else in most cases.

I kind of feel like Earth’s protection’s CD is too long, which is just another reason to use Forge over it.

Don’t discard Dolyak as an option just because people say the health regen is “meh”.

You should have about 102 Health Regen per sec. With Dolyak, you’ll be at 132 Health Regen per sec. That’s more than if you had Virtues Master Trait “Absolute Resolution”.

Your build is also a bunker one. Dolyak would improve both Toughness and Vitality. It’s a great rune for extra bunkiness.

Avoid condition damage and/or duration.

What do you want from runes? You can either improve something you have little of, or max something you already have lots of.

In my opinion, damage of bunker build sucks so I’d try to get as much Power as I could, but I’m a Power-maniac Guardian. If you want to increase Power, Rune of Strength is great since it also adds damage.
Rune of the Pack is a little less damage (the proc doesn’t count because it doesn’t proc properly) but also adds Crit Chance if you’re low.

If you haven’t changed Orbs in the trinkets you should be around 21~22% base Crit Chance (plus 5% from Radiance) from the gear you mentioned, and though I think it’s a fine number, some disagree and aim for 33% or more Crit Chance.
Rune of the Pack and/or Sigil would boost to 32% or 37%, which is quite an increase in damage.

Sigil of Accuracy is one of the best in my opinion, though it loses slightly in damage than Sigil of Force, there’s plenty of skills that proc on Criticals that could benefit from it. It’s also far more reliable to have a constant effect than something that happens occasionally in my opinion.
The only exception is Sigil of Hydromancy so you don’t let your targets get away easily, but since you’re bunker build, I don’t think killing/chasing targets is your priority (also your second weapon is a staff, not really good for 1v1 or chasing people).

Rune of Divinity isn’t good for specialization as Archmortal said, but it is a great Rune. It boosts everything you have, damage (roughly 20 extra GS damage on auto-attack), critical chance (2.8%), 600 Health, 3 Healing on VoR, etc… but it greatly increases Critical Damage (12%).
If you have lots of Crit Chance already, this is a great increase in damage.

If you’re focusing heavily on Boons you could also try 2x Water, 2x Dwayna and 2x a specific boon or 2x Major Sanctuary for a 50% increase in boon durations. If you use a Hammer, I think you can have Protection permanently up with this, for GS I don’t find this as useful but for Staff’s Empower it does wonders (12 seconds of Might!).

These are the Runes/Sigils I’d use, but it depends on what you want for your build now.

I think the 2x boon duration runes would be the way to go.

Another rune to consider is Lyssa for more crit but the 6 piece set removes conditions and grants every buff for a few sec after using. Not so helpful with the golemn Elite but great for the other 3.

Danicco, I treat myself as anything but bunker. The very fact that you think that way means something is wrong and that I need more offense. I think we’re knocked it down to Strength or Divinity.

I am very sure that with my GS out, I have 30% crit chance and 51 crit dmg. Maybe Strength and Minor Accuracy is the way to go

Here’s an idea. What if I drop Pure of voice for empowering might, then give myself Soldier runes in addition to replacing the valkyrie accessories with beserker accessories?

Edit: Okay, another new idea.

- Drop Pure of Voice for Empowering Might
- Pick up Soldier Runes
- Swap the two Valk accessories for Beserker accessories (6 crit chance)
- Give my Staff a Sigil of Perception (
12 or so crit chance when stacked)
- Give my Sword a Sigil of Accuracy (+5 crit chance)

I could then rock 50+ crit chance, constantly maintain empowering might’s benefit and still be able to remove conditions with my shouts.

Oh and be able to get 70% crit chance with Save Yourselves.
