Ok I don’t think anyone here would deny that the Scepter needs to be changed and isn’t what it should be, the scepter needs to be the guardians long ranged weapon to bring us in line with other professions, after thinking about it I think the fixes to scepter are actually relatively simple to make, here is what I would do

Ability 1 - Shoots a beam of light at a target dealing x damage (1,200 yard range) The range isnt the important part here but the beam is, because the ability is a beam and not a ball it will travel much faster and actually hit targets, it wont be able to miss or fall short unless evaded which is intentional

Ability 2 - Creates a symbol dealing x damage and applied burning for x seconds (Whatever the standard AoE range is) I cannot understand why Smite is not a symbol, if it is a symbol it can be worked into almost all builds, but because it is not it cant be used effectively in many builds, the range on this ability should also be buffed

Ability 3 – Chains of light is fine, a ranged increase would be nice and an increase on the vulnerability duration but other than that it is the only worthwhile ability on the scepter

To recap, this would fix the scepters range problem, make the first ability get to the target in under a month, and make the second ability and weapon viable for other builds except pure damage

Those are my ideas, Id love to hear your feedback and opinions on the scepter, after a long think I think these changes are pretty much perfect for what the scepter is and should be, what struck me was how simple it would be to actually make this weapon effective without making it overpowered.

Not bad. Somewhat similar to the idea I posted in pretty much every post about the Scepter.
Number 2 should definitely be a Symbol. The first skill could be improved simply by giving it a cast-time and speeding up the projectile. My personal favorite suggestion is doing that but making it a chain that ends in a projectile finisher.

I like all 3 ideas, the the beam is a great idea and would look cool also.. and the symbol idea is a great one also almost a no drainer it should have released like this.

But now it will never be like this because you said it first and they have to much pride to take this idea now =)

so enjoy your slow blue balls that never seem to explode when you want them too!

If we get enough support we can make them do something similar to this, I dont think they have so much pride that they wouldnt listen to suggestions from the community, if they did something similar to this then it would be fine, it doesnt have to be an exact copy

I’d totally get behind Smite being a symbol. One of the issues behind Symbols, however, is that they all follow a similar formula: Deal damage to the enemy and grant a boon to allies. Symbol of Wrath gives Retal; Symbol of Protection gives Protection, and so on.

If you turn Smite into a Symbol, Vigor is probably a good boon to attach to it. Maybe Fury.

i just needed a reason to make my blue balls comment =p

But about the Symbol thing it would also be cool because it would be the only symbol you can place around at rang its not PBAoE or at
least i would hope they keep it like this

Nope, you’re forgetting the staff can cast Symbol of Swiftness at range, although I rarely see it being used for damage. Smite becoming a symbol has been suggested a lot and I haven’t seen a single player disagree. I feel it has the best chance of actually being implemented. I thought about fury before, but I have a feeling that it would be smacked with an extra long cooldown, so I agree with Eveningstar on using vigor instead.

If it was a symbol it would also allow all the traits to suddenly be useful ESPECIALLY as the scepter traits are in a line that forces you into a bunch of minors that help symbols in the first place.

maybe orbs speed should be increased a bit, but the other abilities are fine atm
if you change 2 : you will lack ranged dmg vs ppls on walls in wvw , and this is the only weapon that can attack on walls
if you change 3’rd ability range (buff it) every guardian will use scepter (even if as secondary weapon) just to troll on wvw

The beam will have to be multi hit to balance the speed. For example, our scepter will take 1 second to travel for 1000 damage. The beam can be two hit over 1 second, doing 500 damage each hit. This will guarantee that you cannot outrun it and prevent the scepter doing too much damage. Imagine in WvW that your scepter’s beam keep critting for 3k with no travel time. Would be a little bit too strong.

No one said that making Smite a symbol would result in its loss or range ground targeting. Like I said before, you can already cast a symbol at range from the staff.

Making #2 a Symbol would be great, but Smite isn’t really the functional problem of the Scepter. Changing #1 seems higher priority to me.

If they ever sped up the scepters projectiles, expect another damage reduction to the weapon. They allready reduced it`s damage by roughly 1/3 then what it was since headstart. They did increase it`s range a little too. But for faster projectiles the attack speed and or damage would get slowed or reduced quite a bit.

i see your point, but a projectile that hit with low damage, maybe its better than a projectile that do more damage but mostly of times dont hit if you aren’t on close range :P

Not necessarily. Damage is just one (of many) ways to balance skills. Increasing the speed, but slowing down the cast-animation (or even giving it a short cast-time), would also work.

Probably, currently it’s the longest ranged scepter and it’s auto-attack has comparatively high damage. Honestly the only issue I currently have with scepter is it’s projectile speed – I have no issue wielding a wand or shooting glowing bubbles at my enemy, but I would like to see a boost in projectile speed, even if it comes at a cost of projectile damage (provided the sustained DPS remains the same).

I play Warrior, Guardian, Elementalist and Thief.

Not necessarily. Damage is just one (of many) ways to balance skills. Increasing the speed, but slowing down the cast-animation (or even giving it a short cast-time), would also work.

Someone “popular” could make a petition for it. I would gladly spam it on some other forums. Seriously, I love my mace+focus/2h weapon set, but the lack of a decent ranged weapon REALLY hurts in WvW…
