Guild Leader Of [LOOT]
Yaks Bend Allaince Commander [YBA]
Just want to share a tip to all fellow guardians. If you know this already, good for you.
When thieves do the shadow refuge skill, you can knock them out of it, negating the 10s stealth they would have, by using number 5 on the shield.
I also love doing this, and it usually works like a charm, both when 1v1’ing Thieves and in team fights. Just to add a note to the tip, try to wait a couple seconds after they cast the Refuge to use the Shield, since most of the Stealth stacks at the end, and you want to make sure they don’t try to run back in. Knock them out so that the Refuge disappears as they’re getting back up on their feet, and then proceed to wreck them. SoA is also useful for dealing with Dagger Storm from condition Thieves, basically negating half of their Elite.
Binding blade will find a stealthed thief.
Spamming staff also makes thieves sad.
Thanks for the info, very much noted.
It’s little things like this that make me love this game. There’s always curveballs to be thrown.
This also provides the revealed debuff, which is 3 seconds to take advantage of. Even if they begin evade spamming, you’re already eating away at their initiative pool. Very easy to counter a thief if you know what you’re doing.

This is a good tip. The #5 on greatsword will tag them, and then you can pull them but they still won’t be visible, but they will be next to you.

They can hide, but they cannot run sort of thing?
If they stealth or you see them coming. Get an Aegis up. If you don’t have an Aegis, count to 4 and dodge.
When you see their cute little house dump all your AOE on it.
Never stop moving, strafe erratically in wide arcs when they are invisible.
TBH a thief should never die to 1 person. A good one will simply stealth and run away. Don’t chase.
Pretend you’re Nero and swing at the air. At the air I say!
Asuras can also fire off Pain Inverter if they suspect a cloaked thief is about to strike. Will make them think twice about ( or regret ) unloading all their burst onto you.
Spamming your auto attack in general is a good tip. You might look foolish but not nearly as foolish as the thief who comes out of stealth in down-state.
^^ to add – autoattacks with a chain (hammer, GS, sword, mace, etc), you’ll notice the animation change if you’re actually hitting them when they’re stealthed. so that gives indication as well.
and yes, nothing like a thief coming out of stealth downed. XDD
Best way to fight a thief.. is to run away.
Something that anoys me is that a stealthed player can move in/out off Ring of Warding.

A guardian can be very resilient against thieves so I find thieves to be the ones who run away.
In which my tip in fighting a thief is, dont chase them.
Usually not worth your time/You dont have enough control to keep him from escaping/He could be leading you to a trap/Hes just waiting for your defensive abilities to be on cooldown
For me being a bunker guardian i just pop retaliation and watch them kill themselves.

I’ve seen so many guardians posting this and it makes no sense, retaliation is an effective boon against thieves since they are fast attackers, but unless they are at 10% health and unaware of your boon, I don’t see how you’ll even kill a semi-competent thief since they likely won’t even be on top of you with that amount of health.
On topic, if you keep GS #5 available until the Thief gets low, he’ll 90% of the time try to wide the gap from you and cast Shadow Refuge, try that gauge that transition moment and cast GS #5 before he tries to get away, if you hit the skill and they are close enough, they will pop Shadow Refuge and you can pull them out immediately from it which means they won’t have any stealth duration on them and you can mow them down. (This may be difficult to achieve with an experienced Thief since he’ll probably Shadowstep away from you making it difficult to be in range to pull it off).
I see most of you guardian trying to do this, so I stand around LOS in my Shadow Refuge. Or I just blind you like I do when I stomp you. Or dodge… which ever is more convenient.
(Or I just stand at the edge farthest from you so I don’t get pulled out.)
Really need a knockback to get us out of stealth. kitten Mesmers!)
I play Guardian as well, and GS 5 is not as effective as Hammer or Shield 5.
