Hey so I have been using my guardian as my main class for awhile (about 3-4 months) and am loving it, but I have full exotics and knights, yet I have issues killing things (primarily in dungeons). I have been searching a little bit, but I have not seen a chart statistical break down of armor ‘break points’ that can be used to optimize my build. Quite frankly, I feel that I have too much defense and not enough offense. What are some common break points for armor before diminishing returns sets in? is moving from 3.3 to 2.8 a huge power leap? What are some other links or guides on other websites, or charts/graphs? All help is appreciated and will be taken into consideration, thank you in advance

as much as i enjoy min/maxing, at the end of the day, performance will ultimately be about how you play, under certain circumsatnces, over stats. : )) that being said though, a lot of people used to throw around the value of 3k armor being the point that you want to reach and not go above. and that’s when DR kicks in. though i’ve never really looked into the math that much.

i’ve then heard people playing with 3.4k and feel their survivability going up. then there are peolpe running around with 2.5k armor in WvW and don’t seem to have problems surviving. i used to run only 3k+, but now comfortably run ~2.6k in various situations and feel more than fine : ))

if you’re mainly looking to do dungeons, and assuming you have full Knights armor, weapons and jewelry, might i suggest slowly swapping in berserker trinkets to up your damage as a start? and then through gameplay, you can find a balance point that you feel comfortable and you can excel at. or y uo can keep pushing yourself and using the classes mechanics to help mitigate/make up for damage – blinds, blocks, protection, regen, or just simply knowing the situations you’re in and what attacks (be it AI mobs or actual players) you need to completely avoid.

Agreed, swap in Berserker trinkets until your survivability is as low as you feel comfortable. You’ll probably be surprised at how much you can increase your offense without feeling fragile.

There aren’t really breakpoints per se; the balance between offense and defense is a personal choice and ultimately depends on how skilled you are at playing your profession.

Oh, and if you end up keeping some Knight’s pieces (and you have some spare gold lying around), swap them for Celestial. It provides statistically superior offense and defense to Knight’s (for Guardians).

why waste hours doing something that you get nothing for? Enjoyment? I’d rather run fractals.

I am already appreciative of the advice!

I really was looking for a statistical breakdown because I have not seen one before, and I know other classes such as ranger have done charts and graphs on their classes and I had not seen a Guardian one yet. If I knew how and had the gold I would do it myself, but alas.

Celestial does sound awesome, but the one stipulation is that I am not a fan of magic find after having put time into researching the exact amount of benefits that it gives; therefore I try to stay away from it in all my gear because there are other, better alternatives out there, at least that is personal opinion.

Also the guy that is asking about comparing all the classes in a support role is having a great thread, seeing as I also have an elementalist and mesmer

you could always look at effective health and effective power like on gw2buildcraft.com, though again then, it’s still up to you how low you can go on armor and how high you need to go on pow/pre/crit to get to where you want to be. : ))

for what it’s worth, my personal thresholds used to be:
2k power, 3k armor, 16k health
now i’ve lowered my “defenses” to 2.5karmor, 14k health and i can put the rest into damage.

at the same time, this of course all depends on what type of content you’re doing, who you’re doing it with and what kind of play style you want to achieve. : ))

and MF% is going to be removed from gear. : )) so unsure how that will play out on the gear that has MF% on it.
