Need advice on my one and only noob :D
I’ll answer to the best of my abilities based on my understanding of the class.
So decided guardian was going to be my fave, so far so good, I love it
The only thing is when I look at guides for Alturistic healing, I get a bit lost :S
Im at level 35 at the minute and have picked myself a hammer up instead of my GS, which I do not like, the symbol is great but im obviously missing the point, im having trouble rounding enemies up without the GS 5th
The ‘rounding up the enemies’ part is achieved by using your GS skill 5 once to land the blades on them, then use it again to pull them towards you.
Also can someone explain how to use my virtues because the sticky on alturistic really covers far too much for my understanding of the guardian, but has definately taken my eye with the stacking of might (:S) which is causing my heals along with my signet.
First Virtue, when active, allows you to put a short burning DOT on your target every 5th strike. Activating it will allow you to put a DOT that does more damage on your target straight away and blinds target in an area if traited.
Second virtue, when active, gives you a passive health regen. When you activate it it heals you and your allies around you for a certain amount.
Third virtue, when active, gives you Aegis (blocks the next attack that lands on you) every 40 seconds and when activated gives you 1 Aegis.
Also when im picking my gear from quests and auction, what should I be looking for to help my alturistics? power? precision? toughness? vitality? crit?
While leveling, just pick up pieces that give you power, precision, crit damage, etc while having some Toughness and Vitality. Don’t really bother about condition damage or healing at this point.
Strictly my opinion, and by no means I’m a Guardian pro. I play too casually to even know the ins and outs of this class.

So you have a few problems here bud. Altruistic healing is an end game build that is really only beneficial at max level and not too great for leveling. You cant even get the AH trait until level 40 in the valor tree and its really only good in a group setting. The heals start rolling in when you are adding boons to your allies and the more allies you have the more healing you do so solo play is less beneficial.
For the use of your virtues I always use virtue of justice as soon as it is up and if speced into radiance at least 15 points so that it is replaced every time you kill an enemy. Also if you are traited 5 points into virtues it stacks some might on you every time you use it. The other virtues are more for when you need them for a short heal or a needed block.
For leveling I would suggest something more focused on dmg which the zeal tree is ideal for. I also recommend using the GS for leveling with the zeal tree which has some great traits to help with the great sword. Same with gear focus on some pwr precision crit damage gear with some vit or toughness if you feel you need it.
Hope some of this helps.
More or less what Munster mentioned…
For lvling do whatever suits you better or works for u…i was spending points in zeal and honor for survivability
For end-game now…this is another story. My advice having played guardian a lot and after checking endless builds and hints I recently ended up to the altruistic heal/shouts build. You maintain a pretty good dps and you actually use the guardian the way it is meant to…i.e. a tank/self-heal/boon giver with a decent dps. You will never hit like a warrior but you will be 10000% helpful party and self-wise:)
Warrior lvl 80
Ranger lvl 80
I am currently lvl62 so I have recently gone through this. Altruistic Healing isn’t available until lvl 60 so don’t worry about it too much now.
At 40 you can get Two-Handed Mastery in Honor. This is a key ability. For PvE equip a GS and Staff, take Purging Flames utility and go to aoe town. I simply geared with Vitality and killed stuff w/o a problem. At 45 you can have Renewed Justice in radiance 15 on top of 2H Mastery which will help you take down packs faster. Make sure to use your combo fields
I personally carried every weapon but if you add mace, scepter and shield or focus you’ll have the ranged and survivability setups covered.
I’ve been running Altruistic Healing at 60 in WvW and its great… Although my damage output is half what it will be with 80 gear and traits so I’m going more support until then.
Blood~
Thanks everyone switched back to gs bought some top gear in auction house for 2 gold lmfao, new build based on what i know at my level
I am soloing everything, easily
If your still interested. Below is what I suggested for someone else having pbroblems. Note that I am considering changing from Berserk for Knights set.
@Azure
Here is what I have been running and it seems to keep me and my allies up.
Traits : 0/10/30/30/0
Radiance: Signet Mastery
Valor: Meditation Mastery, Retributive Armor, and Altruistic Healing
Honor: Writ of Exaltation, Empowering Might, and Writ of the Merciful
Gear: Full exotic berserker armor with 5 Superior runes of the grove. Exotic berserker great sword with major sigil of bloodlust. Cleric staff with sigil of air. Berserker rings, earrings, and amulet.
Skills: Signet of Reslove, Stand Your Ground, Hold the Line, Smite Condition, and Renewed Focus (elite).
Let me first say that this is a modified version of Silent’s Paladin build so credit where credit is due.
My set up is all about the boons while keeping respectable crit chance and damage. Right now I get 41% crit chance so I can keep around 2 to 3 stacks of might on folks and more in bigger fights. Altruistic Healing + Stand Your Ground + Hold the line in a 6 man group = 24 boons that all give me a healing benefit. Then I still have the staff skill Symbol of Swiftness which damages foes, heals (with the trait), and give me a heal because of the boon it provides. Then Empower which has its own built in heal and the stacks of might in big groups also gives me heals. The greatsword’s default attack ends with might boon so heal and the 4 skill symbol of wrath give me a boon, damages foes, and heals me. All this with our passive regen ability and last but not least the nuke selfheal of signet of resolve.
The 5 Superior Runes of the Grove give me a 25% chance on hit to give me protection boon for 4 seconds with a 30 second cool down. Trust me, you will be surprised how often this triggers. Oh and it’s a boon so heal from Altruistic Healing.
Something else to remember is that those symbols can generate critical hits just like weapons. So if you read the battle field right, you can place the symbol from the staff on one fight and join in at another part and drop the symbol from your greatsword. Then spin and watch the might boons start stacking up on your team and healing pour on to you.
Haven’t tried this out in any of the PvP formats but in PvE it’s been a lot of fun.

Renewed Focus is pretty good. You can pop all your virtues then hit RF for 3 seconds of invunerablity and then get all your virtues recharged.

Thank you for all of your posts. I am still downloading the game and I am trying to figure out which class I should be. I think this may be the link I was looking for.
