Hello everyone, i just hit 80 on my guardian and i just love this class ! hes the first 80 i have on gw2 and i need some help on understanding how gear work in this game .. Is there a better way to get good gear than just chaining dung non-stop ? and how do i get a decent weapon too.. ?

Right now my build is all messed up and im looking to be a tanky/support build because im always playing with my friends and their all dps (mesmer/warriors/ranger) and if i can add damage to this kind of build when im playing alone. So if anyone could help me i would be please

Thank you and sorry for my bad english .. !

Edit ; Im talking about pvp and WvW, i rarely do pve and i will use the same gear !

Guardian has to have special set of gear and traits for each task. There is no one-size-fits-all, so you have to say what you want to do; PvE? PvP? WvW?

Nobody at Anet loves WvW like Grouch loved PvP. That’s what we need, a WvW Grouch, but taller.

Most of your support comes from your skill/weapon/trait choices rather than your gear.

Dungeons are the best way to get money and in the process you also get gear.

To start though you can buy Draconic gear in the black lion trading(~20-25g if I’m remembering correctly for the whole set). Or you can do some WvW to get it. But really dungeon running is just a really solid option as you get lots of money and tokens for gear.

Hammer/Staff with Zerker gear is a nice supportive, good dps setup using the 33044 build (look at Obal’s DPS post, lots of good information). Personally My group likes a Support guard, but I find I can go full support or I can go with the hammer and zerk and the difference is very minimal. Honestly dungeons are faster and easier with the zerk. However it takes some time to learn how to not die with zerk gear, but at the same time if you just raise your passive defense it’s not really going to alert you to where you are making mistakes as obviously.

So i’d say make a choice, dive in head first to zerker gear. Or, be ok with a more supporty/tanky setup knowing it’s a little slower. Personally at this point I run both, I see merits in both (regardless of what most say) so it’s up to you.

personally I went Full Soldier (PVT) Gear and cleric weapons for my support setup. Running 00266. And Zerk setup is Full Zerker gear and weapons with 33044.

Of course I tweak things here and there but that’s the gist of it.

Allright so i just bought full cleric’s gear with some soldier pieces, running a GS/staff 0/1/2/6/5 build, im really tanky and bring lots of heal/support and i can do nice damage when im buffed by people. I dont know wich runes tu put on my gear, i was thinking maybe runes of baelfire and runes of sanctuary for more damage and vitality but im not sure if thats good.

I currently have 1.6k power, 2.8k armor, 16.9k health, 783 healingpower and 962 with my staff and only 8%critchance.

Oh and i was wondering if i could switch between a tanky/support and an offensive/tanky build with this gear ? Thank you !

Not really. You can switch for some offensive trait, that would help you. But your gear is pretty much tanky, leaving really little place for improvement without changing your gear or at least part of your gear.

What you can do to improve you DPS without changing too much?
Take zerker trinket. Ascended trinket don’t cost too much (except earing if you don’t do guild mission) and they don’t need to waste a transmutation charge to put a good looking skin.

I only want to find gear and runes that would let me switch between tank/support and dps build, I dont play that often so i dont really have time to farm gears and im not really rich ..

For WvW the bog standard (for Guardians in groups) is the AH trait build.

Something like 1,0,6,6,1
Zeal (First Minor)
Valor IV, VI, XI
Honor II, IX, XI
Virtues (First Minor)
Make sure to run 2-handed weapons. Use Staff #4 as much as you can for heals and more heals.
I usually run 2 shouts and something else.

For PvP, the standard is Meditations
Valor I, X, XII
Use 3 meditation skills.

I can’t remember the rest. :/

Nobody at Anet loves WvW like Grouch loved PvP. That’s what we need, a WvW Grouch, but taller.

Thanks for your reply Svarty, so i can use my gear for both of these build ? like with zerker trinkets and my cleric gear? or should i try to pick some precision or switch over for some soldier gear piece ? i dont want to be bad at dps if i switch, also wich runes should i use ? i was thinking baelfire runes on my trinkets and the vitality one on my gear, would that be nice ?

Oh and sorry for all these question i feel stupid but gw2 is uncommon to most mmo im not used to this !

With sPVP you don’t need to build your gear up. You can zone into the heart fo the mists and just choose what you want for your setup. So shouldn’t be too much concern there, have fun trying things out.

For WvW I like a tanky build, you said you got cleric/PVT that’s what I run in WvW most of the time. When solo/small group roaming I’ll swap to my zerker setup, but for now the tanky setup will be good for the larger scale battles, which is much of WvW from what i’v seen (i’m on a t1 server, smaller servers probably differ though).

My previous post was made with a heavy leaning towards dungeon advice, i hadn’t seen the PVP/WVW leaning post yet.

But as to your comment from earlier, “hmm allright so your telling me as long as my traits are well placed my gear wont matter that much ?” In terms of support for the team yes, the only two places healing power really scales well is the dodge roll and Pure of Heart trait (heal when aegis breaks). Other than that it’s mediocre in my opinion.

BUT, your gear does matter as it’s going to determine your passive defense and your offense potential. So gear matters, it’s just that the whole support system doesn’t benefit that much from your personal gear choices, it’s more about your own personal situation, defense and offense due to poor effects of the support stats (boon duration/healing power). At least that’s my opinion on it.

And yes GW2 is quite unique for an MMO. No real set roles, it’s all a bit more subtle than most games where there is a clear healer/tank/whatever.

Yeah thats what i like about sPVP i dont have to worry about gearing but i still want a real gear, So your telling me that power vitality and toughness gear should be better due to poor healing power ? how much hpow you find decent to run with ?

Im now thinking about switching to soldier gear with zerker trinkets, with some pieces of my cleric gear to get some healing power bonus
