New 80, need build + gear + advice
Re-roll.
Any questions?
Yes actually, the ones I posted in the above response. I’m guessing you must not have seen the lower half of my post, or maybe it didn’t come through, so I’ll post it again so you can.

A) How do I get geared now?
B) In two parts I’m looking for a good PVE farming build for solo/dungeons and I’m also looking for some specs in wvw that deviate away from the GS/Staff or GS/Hammer combo. I’d like to use a build that involves scepters, focus, torch, shield, and mace, or some combination of those. Even a condition fire build would be a lot of fun to play.
Help me out here guardian vets, I’ve been trying to read a lot on this board but I feel like while I’m reading a lot of information, I’m not understanding the ‘why’ behind it.
Also, whats up with the lack of consecration builds?

Appreciate your time, thanks again.
I can only speak from a wvw perspective.
The strongest builds tend to be those using GS/S or H/S as they are strong weapons and work well with AH etc.
Another build I have tried recently in wvw has been the triple meditation build in slivens pvp post. It’s a 0/30/30/5/5, M/T and Sc/F. The issue with this build is that it is great and works fine 1v1, it’s a selfish build and is a bit glassy for zerg play. I have no idea how it would do in PvE as I spend my time in wvw.

pls excuse Amins : ))
know there’s a big patch coming out within say.. the next 12 -24 hrs with lot of SUPPOSED balance changes, skills tweaks, trait fixes..
that aside though:
A) check out Dulfy’s Endgame gearing guide
- Craft with mats you’ve gathered / farmed on your own
- Do dungeons for “free” gear, but do let people know if you’re new. try to find a guild / static group that can help you
- if you happen to have some karma laying around, you can use that too
i slowly worked my way from green to yellow to exotic orange gear. it’ll take time, but don’t fret. and know you’ll keep changing your gear as well as you go. well least i do.
B) check out Brutaly’s guide on the AH Hammer spec – stickied guide of the Guardian forums. lot of great info even if you don’t plan to play hammer.
seems you want to go one-handed weapons. look down the Radiance line for the Grandmaster trait. i play the build Bond plays as well and definitely works in PvE. in WvW works for roaming, big zergs, you ahve to be WAY more careful. i would advise you after reading about builds, try them out and tweak them to your own liking. there is no one build out there that all Guards will say is one to go to.
there are plenty of guides that fellow Guards have put up already on the forums here with very elaborate explanations. what are some specific “why” questions that you had regarding what you read here?
if you feel there are lack of consecration builds, you should try to aim for coming up with one if you enjoy playing them. ; )) they are more situational if you will. least from my perspective.

As for build advice, what are you looking to be stat-wise? Bunker-y? DPS/condition focused? Utility geared? Support oriented? Or perhaps a mixture of 2? Also, what’s your race? Some races have good elites to use.
Knight gear + zerker trinkets will get you by in pve
I highly recommend getting dungeon armors. It’s “free” – takes only time – and aside from armor tokens you also get quite a bit of gold and few drops.
This is what I did and what I think you should 2, as I think the way your character looks is the most important factor ( stats can also be changed with transmutation stones ):
1. Go to Lion’s Arch – Fort Marriner
2. Check dungeon armors ( preview ). Without closing the preview window go to another one and add something you think looks nice. When ur “armor” is ready, write down how many tokens and from which dungeons you need in order to get your armor. If possible (you can always use gw2lfg.com) do at least 1 of each needed dungeons per day ( that way you will get 60 tokens for doing the dungeon + possible 6-9 from bag drops.
3. AT THIS POINT you can go with only berserker gear, since PvE for guardians is a piece of cake. Just learn to use dodge and time your skills.
4. When ur rdy ( got the resources ) craft ur endgame gear with armorsmithing ( prolly Knights – pow/prec/tough ) and transmute so you got the looks and the stats.
5. Setup that can never go wrong is Knight’s Armor and Berserker’s Jewelery. When ur rdy and learn a thing or two you can change that.
6. For starters I recommend Superior Rune of the Soldier ( gives vit/tough + shouts remove conditions ) for all armor pieces – around 7 gold ( you should have WAY more than that from doing dungeons ).
For weapons choose whatever stats you feel like ur lacking.
This is my build that I use in both PvE and WvW and I feel quite confident about myself, I rarely die and help my mates in both ways – supporting their survivability and DPS:
Zeal – 0
Radiance – 15 – Signet Mastery
Valor – 30 – Purity, Retributive Armor, Altruistic Healing
Honor – 20 – Superior Aria, Empowering Might
Virtues – 5
There is quite a bit of synergy between Radiance 15, Virtues 5, Altruistic Healing and Empowering Might.
Activating Virtue of Justice gives blind ( close ) and burning to your allies ( more dps ). Thanks to Inspired Virtue ( Virtues 5 ), you also give stack of might. Both boons heal you via Altruistic Healing. Thx to radiance 15, Virtue of Justice refreshes every time you kill a foe. In PvE and WvW zerg fights it is possible to spam F1 – a lot of blind, dps via burning and healing + might.
Other traits are rather self explainatory. For utility skills I choose Save Yourselves! Retreat! and Stand Your Ground! + Renewed Focus and Signet of Resolve.
I run with GS/Staff, which you don’t like, but I also use this build for other weapons and it works just fine.
This build is brilliant for PvE and ( imho ) very good for WvW. As you are likely to start with PvE farming – I think you should try it.
I hope I helped and good luck.
farm cof p1, not only will you get good gold generation, you also earn zerker gear via tokens. then use the gold you made to make yourself healing gear for wvw and the karma stacks for pvt gear.
I think Poker said quite right on most things.
The most important thing you need to find out is if you want to dps or tanky guardian. With Poker’s spec I am sure you can dps with the best of them and have nice heals with AH from valor. Where I differ is if you put 30 points into valor that gives you 1216 toughness. Having that much toughness should allow you to survive most fights fairly easy with good dodge and skill use. This is in reference to Poker’s suggestion on possible knight gear. You could put on berserker main pieces and weapons and then put on sapphire rings neck and earrings, that is knight gear for accessories if you think you need the extra toughness.
For my tanky guardain I run a 30/30/10 build Valor, Honor, and Virtues with Purity, Honorable Shield, and Altrustic Healing. Superior Aria, Writ of Exaltation and Pure of Voice. I do swap WoE for others like 2 handed cd reduction depends on the fight. In Virtues I take Vengeful.
My suggestion for gear is to find the major and minor stats you want from
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Item_nomenclature
and along with Poker’s suggestion
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Equipment_acquisition_by_stats#Dungeons
that will help you find where to find the stats. If the look you want doesn’t come in the stats you want then just use fine xmute stones to fix that.
To help you get started buy some rares in the stats you want, put in buy orders so you save a bit of cash. That will get you a good start for gear. Also look at doing some of the temple events if you want say soldier gear, you can buy all exotic neck, ears, rings, and back for some stat combo, but they cost 42k karma per item and you have to pick them up on that character or they bind on pickup.

My current favorite gear combo is Knight’s weapons + armor, mixed with cavalier trinkets. This gives you toughness, a decent crit rate (mine hits 50% flat with food buffs, +20% with fury) and some decent crit damage on top of it. To make up for the lack of power, I run with a staff for Empower + Empowering Might and battle sigils to easily hit 20 or more stacks of might by myself.
All of this together means you can get something like 3.5k armor, 3k+ attack, ~40 Crit damage, and ~50% crit rate, not including fury (if you have a charr, battle roar is awesome!!!) and be dishing out tons of boons for your party that in turn heal you and make you all stronger.
For PvE / Dungeons, I usually always run with shouts + AH. For PvP however, I almost always go with triple Meditation or 2x Med + Sanctuary / WoR with Monk’s Focus.

I use knights gear (soldiers runes) with zerker trinkets. (0/15/30/20/5)
If works well in WvW and also is okay when I do some PvE (although I wish I hit a little harder).
A) Run dungeons, WWW, craft, or temples for exotic gear. Run fractals, daily, guild missions, and WWW for ascended gear. You can use the build craft website to get an idea how you will gear your guardian. To Save money and time I’d run your guardian in PvP just get a feel for the build if you like it or not. While its not going to be the best translation to the PvE or WWW world it still helps.

Also, can’t give trait advice until we see how bad today’s patch will be.

Any questions?
You should have a Clerics Set.
You should have a PvE Farming Set (IE, Zerker + Magic Find)
You should have your “Niche” set, for a fun build you like: Sword/Focus, Mace/Focus, Scepter/Focus, Scepter/Torch…..
Typically, unless you’re going glass cannon, 4 piece soilders + 2 piece knights (chest/leggings), works really well and is a solid foundation of stats for a DPS base. Typically, I’ll add in some +healing via Jewelry.
You might not want to run the 2handers out in WvW, but there is a reason why the vast majority of players do…. You’ll figure it out.
Solo builds, small roaming builds, group focus builds & zerg builds are all different… they’re also geared tremendously different.
- Solo / Small roaming…. mobility, single target: you can use our 1h’s effectively. You can be zerker and be ok.
- Group Focus / Guild groups… mobility not the issue, focus more on group support (which is not to say just HEALING… but Boons / CC / Condition Clearing). You still need to be doing damage as there are not too many players yet to define “specific” roles like in Zerg vs. Zerg.
- Zerg Combat… Consecrations, Damage NEGATION, Healing & Damage Soaker.
What you need to understand is that what you run in PvE is typically NOT what you run in WvW. Yes, you can get away w/ running a Glass Cannon / Full DPS spec, but you won’t truly be doing that in any sort of massive (30 vs 30) open field. There’s just too much AoE and you’ll get squashed.
It’s fine for 5vs5 or even 5vs10 in open world. Anything more than that and 1 Static Field could ruin your day right quick.
As for specs…. take a pic. There are a TON of really solid builds out here from our active community members that work really well. Just understand the perspective from which they’re being presented….
As for making money, I’m a poor WvW’er that hasn’t had a content update since release…. We don’t have money and we’re typically not balanced…. Better to take suggestions from the dungeon runners.
Better?
