New Guardian here -- what stats on gear?
Hammer is the easiest leveling weapon in my opinion, but it can also be boring. Sword/Focus is another good set, much more engaging. Mace/shield is also sturdy.
As far as your gear goes, for leveling up just focus on power and precision.
Guardians don’t have to be tanky, by the way! There’s a lot of innate tank to them, so they can typically get away with going full damage specs pretty well.
Painbow.6059: Ignore what anyone else who doesn’t agree with me has said because its wrong.
Foofad is right about us being able to tank naturally. My suggestion however is to roam with staff (#3 skill) and DPS with greatsword which is by far the superior pve weapon to use. Just play with it and you’ll see what I mean.
Gear? Well if you want to be more “tanky” you can use toughness or vitality gear but if you’re comfortable with it use damage based gear that boosts power or precision. For your current level there isn’t alot to play with yet. Check out the “post your stats” thread on this forum (sorry for no link but it’s front page anyway can’t miss it). Hope that helps a bit.
i suggest you to put your firsts 5 point in virtue you will get 105 power, regeneration and protection with only 5 points…
anyway try to go for a berserker gear because during leveling you dont need to “tank”
… berserker ftw said someone… enjoy
I would actually suggest 2h mastery/staff/retreat/save your selves combined with boon duration add in hammer/gs/sword/etc as secondary for dps on the target. The reason for that is that the main dps tool when leveling is to minimize time out of combat, ie running.
Ofc with power/precision gear as been said above.
As a guardian you just dont die in open world pve.

and also hammer is easiest way while lvl’ing to die.
really even with perma prot while lvl’ing guardian hammer brough me to downed state in situations that with my mace+shield I wouldn’t even call dangerous…. (veteran bandit + 3 bandits)
charging into group of enemies with sword+focus would also deadly in effects.
about weapons while lvl’ing I would advice mace+shield with scepter on swap for events when letting mobs melee will be quickest way to die….
if it comes to stats – focusing on dmg (berskerk stats) would be same deadly – unless you are sure you will never be alone. I would advice in pair of mace+shield weapon to take stats crafted from totems – healing power – healing power+toughness – healing power+power+toughness which also can be “base” for first good build.
also I’ll agree that guardians way isn’t “tanky” way. we are armored supporters and in most cases our priority is boon/condi control on allies (giving boons and removing conditions)

Seriously if people die versus one veteran and 3 mobs with a guardian its not the weapon that should be blamed. Its absolutely possible to handle 3 veterans of the same level as you and come out winning with a guardian, while going melee 100% of the time, with hammer/GS/sword.
Mace is a total waste of space when leveling even thogh it can be enjoying, which is the most important part, to play with..
Investing in anything other than damage (and perhaps some toughness) in gear only serves one reason, to slow down the pace so you can admire the surrounding, which might suit some people.
Considering we are one of the best sustained dps classes in the game, stating that we are boon and condi removers (even though i do that in full dps as well) are just diminishing the profession.
But thats just my opinion and experience.
For the leveling process, I’ve always preferred the greatsword. Nice DPS, cleave (which the sword lacks), quite versatile and its gameplay is not as boring as the hammer’s. For the stats, what the others said: power, precision and later also crit damage.

actually one lvl higher – and with mace+shield there was no problem – I could even stay in one place and properly cast auto/block/symbol of faith – difference between hammer and this was that hammer in case of survivaability has not really more than prot (just reduction of dmg) and mace have healing every third atack (which with healing gear was able to replenish more than enemies was able to damage)
and i didn’t died… i get downed and that’s a difference :P I managed to rally by killing one of mobs and knockbacking all the rest (and keeping red bar from getting down…) but still with mace shield on same mobs I had no problems.
also I’l point one thing: WHILE LVL’ing – going melee agains 3 veterans alone with gs under lvl 40 is suicide – doing same with hammer is hard to survive going with this lvl agains ANY GROUP of mobs larger than 3 with 1hsword is suicide – with mace+shield is doable but You need to use it properly.
and with scepter+shield is like piece and cake just remember to not let them hit You :P
Investing in things other than dmg so in healing power, toughness, vitality is making You survive things other will not. there are situations when You don’t have time to nuke enemies before he will start damaging or when enemy have retaliation (and that is painfull for full zerkers)
I didn’t mean to state we are just boon givers and condi removers – I mean that this is our strongest part of battle along with sustained damage and that was my answer to statement that guardian is supposed to be tanky.
and that’s my opinion and experience with that class
