I have a hard time using this otherwise useful skill because my character shouts “Retreat!”

Retreat? Really? This is a guardian we’re talking about. It should be “Charge!” or something battle-worthy that reflects both what the skill does and how people use it. Even a shout would be better than retreat.

I’d stop using shield skills too if my character shouted “Oh god please don’t hurt me!”

It’s not like anyone else hears your shouts, and yes you should use retreat when you are retreating, or well, running to somewhere

It all depends on your interpretation of the shout:

1) Retreat! Allies, retreat!
2) Retreat! Or die, enemies!

While I do agree that “Retreat” gives the impression of having been defeated. Maybe something like “Fall back!” would have been preferable?

Or my personal favorite: Run away! Run away!!

Rofl “Oh god please don’t hurt me!” should be something you could
unlock from the store.

Jokes aside, I do agree too ^^. I haven’t gotten retreat either.
Instead I opted for Save Yourselves. And I guess when your allies
are getting hurt, it’s cool. Or if you’re naughty and you tell your enemies…

“Move!” would have been better, but I use Retreat! all the time regardless, it’s just so useful.

If we’re going with jokes, I liked “Advance in a different direction!” from another thread.

Earlier suggestions were: “Move It!” and “Follow Me!”

Or u can make it racial…for example norn can shout “Dinner is ready” or charr can shout “Who let the dogs out?” sylvary can shout “Timbeeeer” asura “my precious” and humans ….well humans are not funny.

I’m thinking “After you!”

Perhaps more seriously: “Forward!” “To me!” “Faster!” and many more. Why not for all shouts have at least a couple of different audio clips which play randomly to keep it fresh? The echoes of “For great justice” are getting old as well.

Not the face is great, but I like Helequin’s idea of having a few phrases that cycle.

What about “For Virtue!” or “Stand fast!” Something stoic, since we are Guardians.

But really, I usually use “retreat” as a “charge”.
So I’d rather have it say CHAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRR ge (emphasys on charr) than anything else.

In fact, my cat is called Charlie and I do harass him by yelling CHARRRRR while making him run for his life.

A nice simple “AHHHHHHHHHHHH” would be perfect, your either screaming at the enemy or screaming because of the enemy .

“Roll out” Followed by a special fear animation wherein the character slowly rolls away. Or perhaps a purple low rider pulls up and takes you away.

I prefer to see it as my Guardian warning her enemies that they would be wise to retreat, she is a norn after all.

Seriously though, I am under the impression that is you shouting for your allies to basically retreat behind you as you take the blows.

I’ve often used that shout and thought, “But retreating is the exact opposite of what I am doing.” In fact I almost never use it to retreat.

I don’t know what you can change it to but it does feel weird when you are using it but not retreating, lol.

It would be really fun to hear “Retreat!” from allied guardi than, “I can outrun a centaur !” plus it has some strategic effect, I hope ANet look into that.

Yeah… I’ve been grumbling about this very thing recently.

“Retreat!” just seems like such a cowardly exclamation—and very rarely descriptive of its common usage.

And as I said to my friend the other day, if the intent of the exclamation is for it to be cowardly, at the very least ANet could change it to “Run Away!”

A more all-encompassing exclamation could be “Onwards!”

A great leader is one who knows when to cut their losses and retreat (it saves lives and prevents further unnecessary deaths). It doesn’t mean surrender.

It fits the Guardian.

Well, maybe the enemy aren’t what you have to retreat from……

“Route Them!”

Usually, when the enemy is retreating they are routing and lost all morale to fight.

“Charge!” would be much preferred, and still makes sense given you’re increasing your speed and defense as you hit the enemy line.

“Retreat!” is just a little…not so heroic.

My Asura uses it as a mind game. Shout “Retreat” and then charge into the enemy lines. They never see it coming! Unless of course, they see you coming.

Picture the scene from Night at the Museum, with Custer going over battle strategies about when to shout attack, and that is pretty much my Asura, with less debate and more action.

If it were to be altered, I would enjoy race themed exclamations, so for my Asura, something like “Strategic Repositioning” would be fun.

For Norn, “Don’t run from the fight, run to it!”

Humans could shout “I have to save Queen Jennah!”
Kidding, maybe.

For Sylvari, something nature related, since that seems to be a recurring theme in EVERY phrase they have. “Swift as the wind!” Or “Uproot” or something.

For Charr, I just imagine a very guttural growl.

I always think of it as saying Retreat to your allies, while you yourself charge in and buy them time. I actually used this skill in exactly this way in the Beta for the end event zombie game, where my bro and I were getting chased by 10+ players, and I used the skill, got him away, then sat in a sanctuary bubble shooting out until it popped, then jumped in with my greatsword, buying enough time for him to escape.

I like the way my human female shouts “Retreat!” and I would be very said if they changed it. That said the way she shouts “Save yourselves!” is my favorite. I can’t imagine not having that in my utility set up simply because it sends chills down my spine every time I use it.

Dont be so close minded. The skill is intended to escape sticky situations. Not charge into battle. Read into the context at least slightly before you add more text to the forum.

Its funny, because am pretty sure most of us it for charging rather then running away, they wont change tho, mostly if they have to pay a bunch actor/voice over or something like that to make a new set of one word.

Withdraw maybe? Idk I only use it to run faster lmao.

totally agree with this. sometimes I just use this for the aegis. And your team mates are like. “retreat or what?!” esp. when I am tanking the mobs…

I TOTALLY agree. Like the OP, I have suggested that Retreat be renamed to “Charge!”. I’m a bit of a role player, and I REFUSE to slot Retreat. I have never used it once. I am a Guardian, a tank, and I will never shout retreat!

“Battle Positions!”

“Regroup!”

“Resposition!”

just would like to say “Charge!” is already a skill it is warrior warhorn skill and if they changed it i would like “Make Haste!” just since its a skill from gw

Obviously ’Move out" is the best choice for a new name.

So is “Retreat!”. I don’t see why people care so much, really. Function is what matters.

This has been suggested several times… this, change the staff, change ranged weapon, change merciful intervention, fix a lot of bugs…
But nothing happen… just another nerf. :\

I kid of course I don’t really have a problem with the skill. It is functional and useful.
